It sounds like she's been nothing but unprofessional her entire career - Ian McKellen has stated that at the first x-men table read, she wouldn't raise her voice up to regular speaking volume and had to raise her hand whenever she'd finished a line because no one in the room could hear a word she said.
She clearly only continued working in this industry because she couldn't think of anything else she'd like to do if she told her parents the truth (that she didn't want to be an actor). No one forced her to act, she's just a stereotypical fearful pooner so crippled by female socialization that horrific surgeries are a more appealing alternative than any sort of confrontation whatsoever.
