You're okay. You don't have to know everything. But generally, going to a psychiatrist or GP who can prescribe meds for general (even severe) depression or anxiety doesn't require going to a (non-medical) therapist first. A decent psych will urge you to see a therapist and ask you if you have*, but for most conditions they will not require it before they prescribe an rx, if they think an rx might help.
