I think there is a grain of truth in the claims of him being autistic. For him, being called "a walking meme" means being cool which is maybe truth is you are a 18 years old streamer, but definitely not if you are middle-aged billionaire who wants to get a pass into politics. My assumption is that he indeed was shocked when people hated him and, subsequently, SpaceX and Tesla.

It is shocking to think about how many hedge fund managers actually bought into Elon's hype. Even now, Elon is promising that Tesla will be worth more than the 5 biggest companies on the stock market - combined. Apple, Google, Nvidia, Facebook, and Amazon - add them up, and that is what Elon is saying Tesla will be worth. Because of robots and robotaxis.
