What's the verdict on Posteo currently compared to paying for something like the full Proton/mailbox.org set? They seem to be decent and trying to stick to transparency, (also https://archive.is/atsJ4 translated now implies Posteo bounced a demand for user data ). I stuck to using Protonmail for non-governmental stuff up to this point, but the fact you have to pay for bridging to an email client like Thunderbird is annoying .. so I'm thinking of swapping to Posteo (two free aliases till they charge .10 euros more) and maybe(?) adding Addy.io on top instead for infinite email aliases. Seems like it'd be reasonable for ~4 bucks a month total since all I need is a simple email service and aliases I can rotate as needed.

A year ago I was torn between going with Skiff or running my own mail server. I almost went with Skiff because I didn't want the hassle to have to run my own server, but luckily I went for the latter option. No regrets so far.

Seems like it'd be reasonable for ~4 bucks a month total since all I need is a simple email service and aliases I can rotate as needed.

Price-wise this seems certainly reasonable. Self-hosting reliably isn't cheaper.

Gonna necro this thread - two things; I would like to vouch for StartMail as one of the better current day privacy focused emails. IK it has been mentioned before so TLDR: they are the same guys who run Startpage, a very, very good private search engine and my personal daily driver for over a year now. Barring that, they're Dutch, and from my personal experience, the Dutch are really anal about their personal property and privacy, so that's another point in my book. They're also vouched for by cyberinsider.

The second thing is - I'm looking for a RiseUp invite. Although I doubt I'll find it here, I figured there's no harm in asking, since they do seem to be pretty high up there in terms of safety, despite the obvious political slant. If someone can potentially provide an invite, shoot me a dm.

I think the best alternative to gmail is outlook if you are looking for a normalfag mail for work. It has some useful organizer tools also, and you can integrate it with office apps. And since it is by microsoft their spyware won't work half of the time so you are relatively in better position than with google. For personal stuff and registrations use protonmail or tutanota, but keep an eye on the news because I once was completely fucked by hidemyass mail when they suddenly decided to close the service.

they are chill and claim to not log iirc, UI is simple but fine. They are also kinda greenies and my suspicion is they will fold to government pressure much like protonmail does, pretty sure proton is extremely glowed up they have cooperated 100s of times. They are in germany, germany is a US colony. I still laugh about snowden fleeing to germany thinking it would protect him. Shows how you can know so much about a subject and be totally blind to another facet of the same subject really

I genuinely cant recommend any email provider, is cock.li still up? I use one times or i buy emails from russkies for a dollar with xmr, thats a 10x premium pricing which i happily pay, yandex is your friend. think i made my kiwi on a mailfence? assume all email is compromised unless you run and manage the server hilldawg style WITH A CLOTH

Looks cool but they arbitrarily restrict the lowest tier plan to one custom domain. Not allowing 1000 domains is understandable, but to limit it to 1? Sad.

At least the business plan which allows unlimited domains isn't much more expensive. Unlike Proton who jack the price up like crazy if you want more than 3 domains. It might seem strange to have a lot of domains for personal use, but it's because I've been using my own domain for years and would pick up better variations that would drop from time to time.

Agree on avoiding anything from Germany, big chance it glows or the developer is some antifa extremist. And even if not, the government will crack down on them if just one user did a wrongthink.

In the end my only goal here is moving away from Gmail and other Google services for the long-term, so I'm happy with any provider that 1. just gives me a mailbox without overcharging extra features, 2. isn't selling off my data, and 3. gives feds enough of a headache to discourage checking my inbox on a whim (I'm heavily leaning toward Mailfence so far, E2E encryption is nice). I did check the Posteo website again just for a cursory read and son of a bitch:

All of the other charities seemed pretty run-of-the-mill until stumbling upon this. I do wonder if StartMail's dutch privacy laws have a chance to put up more of a fight than Protonmail when it tried to defend itself via Swiss courts and failed with that climate activist?
