Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

With RDR2 being on Epic, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Rockstar sort off have their own store where you can get their games from? Since a buddy of mine doesn't have GTA5 on steam but instead their social club, so if this is the same story with RDR2, and I'm guessing it will be because RDR Online, seems one found an easy way around it kinda like with Ubi's games.

Lord Gaben who art in Washington, hallowed be thy game. Thy digital distribution platform come. Give us this day our daily vidya; and forgive us our BMs, as we forgive those who BM against us; and lead us not into Chinese spyware, but deliver us from Epic.
Amen.

If Epic is willing to screw over their customers, they'll screw over the devs they're fawning over right now when they see fit. At least Valve pretends to care about their customers.
It’s worth noting that most of the devs are probably seeing none of the money. That’ll go to the publishers that, outside of the Japanese companies that damn well know the score at this point, are going to be collated as short-term profits to tide over shareholders at a point where even the biggest boomer in the world can see companies that are neck deep in controversy. I wonder if Randy’s dicksucking will stop when he realizes all of whatever Epic gave them is going to 2K as opposed to Gearbox. They’ll probably use lower sales as an excuse to downsize anything that isn’t there on contract too.

Its more like Valve just doesn't care at all. It doesn't care to be helpful but it also doesn't care to be hurtful. It's the wallowing hippo of the games industry. It could run around and knock shut over but it doesn't. And I am okay with that. They are also not a monopoly anymore then Google is a monopoly. Most people just choose to use it. And after a decade most peoples PC gaming libraries are linked to Steam. Having to bounce from store front to store front just to play games you already have installed on your computer is aggravating enough already without adding exclusivity deals to launch platforms.

And I will probably play metro exodus when it comes out next year. Having to wait is something that goes with being a PC gamer.

Just so everyone is clear that's an old picture.

Its also obvious he's double jointed. The dude is just searching for easy bait.

The only one I'm really salty about is Journey. But hell, I've waited seven years to play it. I can wait another.

Or, you know, alternatively I can become a sand pirate.

Randy Pitchford is a lot of things but dumb was sadly never one of them (really weird and shameless, though).

Randy Pitchford doesn't care about Gearbox, Randy Pitchford cares about Randy Pitchford. Considering he's previously been and currently is accused of shady dealings, there is no way he's sucking Epic's dick and not getting a huge stack of cash for it; Gearbox devs be damned.

He is such a piece of shit he likely has bonuses structured tied to the first 6 months of sales numbers and then signed with EGS to hamstring those numbers while getting a check that has only his name on it.

The Epic Game 'store' does not fit the definition of a store since it doesn't even have a fucking shopping cart.

It's a glorified webpage that infects your computer with Fortnite.

Valve has never in its sordid existence done anybody any favors, and if Epic running in and buying all of the games forces Valve to take steps against competition that make it more generous with customers and developers, I'm all for it. But as long as Epic's store is complete shit, I'm not buying anything on it. At this point my happy scenario is Valve rousing itself at long last to improve Steam, Epic going straight out of business as a result, and all those games winding back up on Steam. Bonus points if all the buyers on Epic lose everything they purchased and waves of internet tears result, hopefully along with some kind of regulation to ensure the ownership rights of buyers on these kinds of services, because as things stand right now there is nothing between a buyer and instantly losing the thousands of dollars of games they've bought.

All Epic had to do was make full priced games $5 cheaper than Steam on launch until they had a dedicated userbase. Then people would be going there willingly.

It probably would have been cheaper to eat that discount than to pay all those devs for exclusivity.

This is because Tim Sweeny is a dumb autistic faggot who thinks consumers don't drive markets. He should stick to making his child games and not a webpage that pretends to be a store.

I'd do an exclusivity deal with Epic for a year, make this autist pay me a couple of million and include if I don't meet some arbitrary sales goal that I would have made on Steam, make him pay me more. Of course I know I wouldn't meet it since nobody is fucking using this cancer, then I get paid twice. Then in one year release on Steam with a discount and fucking triple my money. I'd probably keep doing this until the Chinese got really pissed when their data mining only gets them like the people who play Fortnite and stop with the exclusivity stuff.

The only benefit to having the Epic store around is taking Chink and Autisim money for publishers and developers.

I'm all for competition but I've said this before in a different thread: Epic is not going the right way with this. If they want to get serious, pissing off the PC gaming crowd and earning more and more bad PR is not the way to do it.

A good way to see it all is, is to imagine Steam and all of the other platforms as shops on a block. Steam is the one stop shop for fucking everything at damn good prices but engages in shitty practices all around. They often have sales to boot but they absolutely refused to recognize refunds/returns until very recently when it had to go all the way to courts to force them to be somewhat pro-consumer.

Other's have tried to muscle in on their turf but none have really succeeded. Origin and U-Play games can be bought on Steam but you have to use their "club cards" [software] to play the game, which is infuriating but not a deal breaker.

Discord tried to have their own place on the street but most people who were with them wanted the free games on their monthly subscription over actually buying games from them, even when they curated exclusives for their storefront. Just like Epic in fact, but with indie games instead of triple AAA or highly anticipated titles. Nowadays, they exist as just that, a mere subscription service for access to a library of free games.

With Epic, they're the new store on the block. Only thing is, the big reason most even used their launcher/storefront in the first place was because of Fortnite and Unreal Engine. Even with all the exclusives, what else do they have to offer?
They have none of the amenities and niceties that Steam does. They don't offer better prices or any real bonus' for shopping with them. The store itself is barebones and lacking features.

What I think Epic needs to do is to curate indie and major developers to release games for the platform full stop instead of just paying for exclusives. If they want exclusives for their store, then they have to be exclusives from the get-go. People get fucking pissed when something that's promised to them ends up not being the case.
Another way to go about it is to pay off the developers to release the game at a lower price on their platform. A price reduction of $5 is not a lot of savings but to tons of people, that's a deal to them. Offering games in a bundle package for cheap would bring on a lot of traffic while not pissing the fuck out of everyone off.

To be fair, Epic is finding great success because most PC users actually don't give a shit.

To be fair, Epic is finding great success because most PC users actually don't give a shit.

They aren't having great success with the store, they're losing money hand over fist as they're paying for exclusives (The Outer World, Borderlands 3, etc) that aren't out yet. And for the games that sell on their store, they take a small cut meaning they would have to move massive units to even break even. They're trying to make long term profit by eating cost short term (like console sales, social media platforms, etc). They're trying to grow a userbase so they can be profitable later, funneling Fortnite money into it nonstop. If they fail to grow (or Fortnite stops printing money) they're going to be in a tough spot.

They are pushing really hard to try and unseat Steam, but they don't even have any actual exclusives as all of their current ones are also releasing on consoles simultaneously. When Valve was starting Steam, they had some real ass exclusives (Counter Strike, Half Life 2) and they still do (Dota 2, Artifact, TF2) and Steam wasn't ever "Chinese spyware in a webpage" levels of bad.

I think most PC gamers will try EGS and not care, but most will likely wait out the exclusivity timer or just pick the game up on console.
