Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

They can suck it. They signed up with scummy scam artists and they're surprised the people who gave them a bribe to fuck over their customers turned around and fucked them over, too?
It being done through sheer incompetence instead of malice just makes it sweeter. That's what you fuckers get for jumping to a store that's barely functional.

This whole fiasco is starting to look a lot like Target's failed expansion into Canada. Only at least Target had a positive reputation to ride on. Epic is just known as that company that makes Ronald McDonald's Battlegrounds.

And being the company that owns a near ubiquitous engine that has has some genres in a stanglehold. I hope the Japanese are willing to start using interal engines for fighting games again. Almost every modern fighting game that doesn’t use 2D sprites (Blazblue and UNIST are the only somewhat important franchises I can think of that still do) use UE3 or 4. They don’t like chinks or Epic any more than I do, and I guarantee that they’re going to get more desperate and demand UE games go on the store as things get stupider.

I figure it's time for an update to this thread. Shenmue III, another Kickstarter game, which was promised a CD-Key for Steam and a CD, has went Epic Store Exclusive. Understandably, people are pissed. But with the wait people have had, I think its going to outweigh the exclusivity.

Looking at the comments on the KS page, even people who backed the PS4 version (which I did) are pissed. I absolutely share their rage. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much they can do, unless Deep Silver comes out and says, "We are going to offer full refunds to PC backers who do not wish to use the Epic Games Store."

I was looking at the Shenmue stuff as well and its still on Steam now with a release date.
Are they going to pull it now? This seems like a gigantic cluster fuck.

Haha..the EGS shitshow continues, eh? :story:

Yet more broken promises and deliberate falsehoods. Hoo, boy.

Sooner or later, people will stop crowdfunding games..maybe..hopefully. Probably not.

Imagine a world where people didn't over-eagerly seek every avenue to evacuate their spare (and in a lot of cases, I'd wager, their not-so-spare) cash to grab ahold of that next piece of escapism. Imagine if the gaming/entertainment industry actually had to try to get (dare I say earn) your dollar.

It's hilarious enough as it is to see people getting burned over and over on decisions with a provably bad track record (stop crowdfunding, stop preordering, for god's sake just stahp plz). Yet looking just a little further into the future knowing full well there is nooooooooo way any of this is gonna pay off for Tencent/Epic just makes it all the better.

Fucking..corrupt chink buyout tactics (I wouldn't even call em loss leaders anymore..they'd have to have some sort of actual product worth a shit to lead into) in a free market system is going to be so flippin' funny to see collapse harder than a Chinese "there's totally people living here, honest!" ghost town in the next 1-3 years.

Shenmue 3 was already sketch enough because it was being backed by Sony when it was announced at E3 the first time, now it is doubly sketch because people actually had email confirmations stating that they're getting a steam key. This must have literally happened a month ago or something, it is just so oddly timed. Like Shenmue may have had a cult like curiousity, but I didn't think it'd do very well even with its legacy, so I don't even understand why Epic made the deal to begin with.

This entire thing is just fucked. This game will get review bombed day 1 over this I'm sure.

You can opt out on reviews on the Epic store, sneaky bastards.
Also found this on the kickstarter comment section a few minutes ago. No refunds bitches. Just look at all that good will going down the drain

I meant on other platforms like metacritic. Hell even on the ps4 version people will just bomb it in protest. Assuming people don't have the memories of goldfish by the time it comes out. Again Shenmue was already weird because right after securing funding from kickstarter it got more funding from Sony itself, which is why they announced it at E3 under Sony. Shenmue 3 has just been weird this entire time and this makes it even worse.

Guess we'll see how long people can hold on to spite.

Yeah, the Kickstarter went up immediately after Sony's conference and screamed past 100% in less than two hours. The apologists at the time were saying the idea was to gauge interest (so, why did Sony feature it at E3 then? Why not throw up any old slapdick game and say "pls pledge ty xoxo"?)

And it's still taking forever to come out, despite Yu Suzuki just rolling in money.

There's no way it's going to be good, at this point. I've seen this pattern before, and this fucking reeks of Mighty No. 9. Even has the same publisher, for goodness sakes.

Not to mention, this just takes another baseball bat to crowdfunding's kneecaps. There's no possible way you could have known the rug would be pulled out from under you like this, because the kickstarter predated the Epic Games Store entirely. Those people bought and paid for, in full, a Steam copy of the game FOUR YEARS AGO. Holy shit, if I help crowdfund a game today, who knows what kind of anti-consumer bullshit I'll see by 2023? If I buy a cool pocket knife, will I get that knife only in digital VR form for Microsoft Hololens?

Gamers are STILL spiteful over Mass Effect 3, so much so they killed Andromeda. So a very long time. Epic store keeps refreshing its 'cunt' meter, so gamers will continue to spite them.

The thing is Microsoft has thrown shade at Epic and so has Cyberpunk 2077. Its 'coming soon' to the Epic Games store, meaning they're getting pre-order numbers massively on Steam and GoG before it even touches the store. Say what you will, people do not like Epic's store.

People actually will. Or just stop. The unfortunate thing is people can't get refunds, so they'll have to use the Epic store. The charge-back time limit is 120 days. There's not really any recourse for people except to sue them. Its really one of the most scumbag things to do, they use Steam to advertise and then just grab the exclusive out of nowhere. You're not real competition if you have to use your comeptitor to advertise for people to get interested in it.

It isn't surprising because this is Deep Silver, which did the exact same thing to Metro. The only people who want this probably bought it already, so they figured its not getting any new sales, especially if people were curious. People view buying things on Epic like washing their hands in shit. They're also focusing their entire model on buying exclusives. That's where all the money for the store is going. The roadmap actually removed the timeframe for the fucking shopping cart. Epic Store is just a fucking webpage at this point.

I honestly think to counter this, Steam should have an agreement that if you put your game up on their platform, you cannot make it exclusive. Because Epic has been using them far too fucking much for this shit. You want to use Steam, you don't fucking advertise there. Enough with this trash.

Deep Silver moved Metro: Exodus to the Epic Games Story because the executives got a big fat check. Never back or buy anything Deep Silver related until its out.

lol

I believed Shenmue 3 would flop before this, now I'm sure.

Hope you didn't pour too many millions into the mediocre looking sequel to a dead niche franchise that has to compete with every open world AAA title from the past few years, Epic.

The thing is that it isn't going to flop, well, not technically. Epic pays basically the development budget of Kickstarter budgets. It might not sell anything, but it becomes flop-immune. Publishers don't care because they're getting paid. It probably isn't going to move that many copies, because the only people who will play it are the ones who bought it already.

Deep Silver already did this before, so they really don't fucking care.

Deep Silver was not announced as a publisher until two years after the S3 Kickstarter. As recently as 6 days ago, they were listing Steam as a requirement for the PC. Hell, I checked my Fangamer backer survey page and it still shows a physical Steam edition as an option to order.

Ys Net may not have had anything to do with the decision to put the PC version on EGS but they damn well better fight on behalf of the backers to allow them to get what they pledged for from the beginning. That will at least give a glimmer of hope that there might be a Shenmue 4, which Yu Suzuki has said he wants to do. As it sits right now, that’s not going to happen.

Don't kickstart anything. That's the only real lesson from this. And never buy from shits who do this again, ever.

That's a fair point, forgot about that. And money is involved which will only increase that spite.

I wouldn't even hold it against them if Steam did that. This is some sneaky shit and it's not fair to Steam or to the people who backed games expecting timely Steam releases

Deep Silver is officially on my shit list and any dev needs to get far away from them as fast as possible. The immediate money can't be worth your biggest fans being permanently pissed and distrusting of you
