Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

Huh, I didn't know that. Though, looking at the real list...yeaaah...these games you can get for cheap on Steam during sales or hell even on some key sites. Hell, wasn't Alien Isolation like...1$ or free on Steam like a year back or something?
dollar, yeah. but i'll take free

The swedish have offered it for free for a while, and they're much less likely to come with spyware like EGS!
I just don't see how free games are supposed to be an incentive for a platform that wants to spy on your data. Speaking of which, have any of you had the unfortunate experience of dealing with Overwolf? If you're an american, you don't even get the option to opt out of this:

The absolute fuck-arse is this? It's just something tacked on to Curseforge. Absolute cancer.

Overwolf bought out the Curse Forge stuff from Amazon/Twitch a while back. A half dozen alternatives to the Overwolf client came out for WoW add-ons before Amazon even got done removing add-ons from the Twitch client.

CARY, N.C. — Epic Games, the company best known for its smash hit Fortnite, announced on Sunday plans to convert Cary Towne Center mall into its new campus.

Epic plans to turn the mall into a 980,000 square foot global headquarters by 2024, canceling out plans announced last year for a mix of office, retail and residential spaces.

The announcement stirred buzz in the community, with some feeling the headquarters will be a much better use of space that’s been struggling to stay open over the years. However, some locals are disappointed about losing stores and venues for residents.

Developer plans mix of offices, stores, residences on former Cary Towne Center site

Epic Games currently operates on Crossroads Boulevard in Cary. By transitioning to the mall property, it will house office buildings and recreational spaces.

Not everyone is on board. One viewer on WRAL’s Facebook page chimed in, calling the announcement "devastating news for those who have been waiting for Cary Towne Center to be turned into something nice."

The original plan, with a groundbreaking scheduled for February, included up to 1.2 million square feet of office space in seven buildings, 360,000 square feet of retail space, 1,800 residential units of varying sizes, a 450-room hotel and 10 acres of parks and plazas.

In 2018, furniture store IKEA had plans to take over the mall but pulled out.

Construction is already underway across the street for Fenton, a 90-plus-acre development along Cary Towne Boulevard that will open later in 2021 with a mix of retail, offices and apartments.

Cary looks to grow up

Only a few stores currently remain open at Cary Towne Center, including Belk. Most of the mall is blocked off.

I'm actually kinda upset that they still haven't added a shopping cart after all this time. There is no excuse as to why they don't have one at this point.
They're too busy with pie in the sky bullshit like turning entire town centres into offices for imaginary business they think they'll have in 2024.

There's also no dedicated user page where you could show people the games and achievements that you have. It's funny since they've added achievements not so long ago and the only way to see them is via the overlay.

That's if you can get the bloody thing to work. Apparently, some people wouldn't have their achievements show, even after they did the necessary thing to obtain them.

Can’t wait for a video of fat Dan Bell waddling around the abandoned Epic campus in a few years
It gets even better: Epic already has a location 10 minutes down the road from this place according to one of these locals on Twitter.
Went and looked it up to make sure this was still the case, and sure enough:

They gain nothing by doing this. ACTUALLY nothing. The only thing they get is having another business on the other side of the highway and maybe bigger space.
Yet this mall was too apparently low-class for IKEA, the previous buyer, to even consider building anything in before they ducked out. IKEA.

EDIT: And yes, the irony of Epic having its HQ right near a GameStop is not lost on me.

At this point, I'm beginning to suspect some form of money-laundering.

the site continues to shit itself whenever more than 2 people want to purchase something, a shopping cart would probably melt that poor 386DX they're abusing as webserver.

At this point, I'm beginning to suspect some form of money-laundering.

in the 4chan thread someone mentioned they probably got that mall for cheap after no one wanted it and can sell their previous office in a good location for quite a bit of dosh, so they probably made a net gain in the end (however small).

Tax, actually.
It's the same reason why companies buy those ridiculously priced "art" pieces, so that they don't have to pay income tax, because they technically don't have income if they spend their income on something that keeps value.
The trick is to spend your money on shit that keeps its value better than paying tax for income would. Losing 5-10% is more than worth it in comparison.

(edit+) This is one of the reasons why the US housing bubble bursting was seen as such a major deal, despite being a very good thing for the average person looking for home, since their prices were no longer artificially inflated, it was terrible for companies because part of their incoming funnelling went into properties, and they just lost a good chunk of their assets. Many real estates that are "for sale" are actually not owned by the real estate company, but they're owned by a third party company that wants to keep their money tapped in somewhere so they don't have de facto income. This would be illegal tax evasion in almost everywhere but the US, and this is why the US is more or less the only country that has insanely ridiculous companies that are powerful enough to acquire Google or Facebook. They just don't pay tax because the tax code allows them to fuck with their numbers.

Literally everyone does this. This is why Trumpster for instance didn't pay income taxes, he just expanded and expanded.
