If he had launched a Kickstarter in 2015-2018 with the intent of finishing the fucking game, he would have made millions upon millions, and sold millions of copies regardless of how good or bad the game was, purely by coasting on his audience of edgy tumblr teens.

Five Nights at Freddy's and Friday Night Funkin are as successful as they are because they took the opportunity presented the very moment they were aware of it and milked every last cent out. Alex's audience hit puberty 5 years ago and moved on.

I used to be one of them.

I learned about YS way back in grade school (I think 2016 or so?). I kept up with its development for about a year, started to lose interest around 2018, and then found the KF/PULL thread in mid-2019.

I'm in my early 20s now.

And, of course, there are all those YouTube comments saying the same thing:

"I joined the Army and was discharged before the game came out"

"I got a college degree before the game came out."

And so on and so forth.

The only thing he needed to do was not throw a tantrum at TinyBuild. They'd given him an insanely favourable deal because they saw the cult following, and still let him have creative control, they just were getting people to fix his terrible spaghetti code. But he couldn't tolerate that and now 7 years on he's only managed to add one rival.

He doesn't but for what it's worth, he actually has a resume of some video game industry grunt work, iirc he did some QA work and informally filled in for some scripting duties among others but he never was a real production guy. This was back in the early 2010's though and he's been out of the professional circles ever since, through the entirety of Yandere Sim development he's been coasting off daddy's money and later the Patreon tugboat.

What this effectively means is a good 2-3 years of some entry level tasks and a decade long resume gap where he worked on this abomination. Unlike some of the old timer Twitch streamers who legitimately have serious chops in media production and social media management to show off and have a post-streaming career with, Alex really has jack shit because of how awful Yandere Sim is in pretty much every possible aspect and chances are he's doomed for a McCareer or going back to school.

I distinctly remember my first encounter with Yandere Sim. Many years ago a Youtube recommended me a random video about an anime girl mudering her peers. I clicked on the thumbnail and the narrator started describing the kidnap-and-torture-your-classmates-into-a-mental-break mechanic in a nasal, monotonous voice.

"Wow", I thought. "This game developer is really putting in effort to sound like an edgy serial killer, but talking like this for 20 minutes makes the joke outstay its welcome. He should have dropped the disturbing anime-obsessed pedophile persona 5 minutes in at most. He will start talking like a normal person any moment now."

It has been 10 years, and I am still waiting.
