Gay Muslims obviously exist but unless they're from a very liberal family, its not likely they will be completely out.
I know one gay Muslim. It's a guy and whilst he believes and God and shit he isn't really religious. His family aren't the strictest either and the family I've met all seem really nice and sweet. However, he is still not out to any of his family and most of his Muslim friends.
Next closest thing is an out and proud bisexual girl I know from a Muslim background. I don't she she would be caught deal in a hijab though. She is mixed race, Muslim mother (raised in a similar house to my friend above, as both her parents were second gen) and Catholic father (strict upbringing but he isn't) who don't give a fuck about religion and just celebrate the holidays, beside fasting for Ramadan or giving something up for Lent.

I think it’s from most progressive leftist activists types hating christians. Their main reasons or nowadays more of excuses, to this is that many churches are anti gay and some push hard traditional gender roles and limits to girls. So when people point out that most muslims tend to be worse about those than extreme christians, these leftist are left with a problem.
Muslims are currently one highest group of the holy oppressed minorities and they are usually brow too, so it’s not okey to hate them. Otherhand letting them get away with clear homophobia and less that great treatment of women is really really hypocritical. Feminism and gay rights are their best public relation cards and get most new members, so can’t really trough those out. There for Muslims must not be homophobic, that’s just islamofobia talking. They are completely cool with gays and muslim women just want to dress like that. I haven’t seen anything else and isn’t a muslim lesbian in hijab so cute and clearly super oppressed by evil western white supremacy patriarchy?

It's why they could hardly say anything when "Islam was RIGHT about women" flyers were posted. They're confident in criticizing Christianity because they see it as the religion of whitey (despite the fact that it originated in the Middle East and still has millions of non-white followers), so criticizing it is criticizing white people. They think all other religions belong to PoCs, who in their worldview are innocent and can do no wrong, so by their logic there can't possibly be anything wrong with religions that aren't Christianity or how PoCs practice them. To them, questioning Islam means questioning brown people, and that's racist, no matter how homophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic it and the practitioners may be.

There's also the fact that Muslims are a persecuted minority... in some parts of the West, where these people live. Or they were persecuted back before the whole "leave the poor Muslims alone" thing really took off, when people were genuinely scared enough of terror attacks to be suspicious of anyone speaking Arabic.
Thing is, not so much any more. You get some people, sure, but the "Muslims good" is pretty firmly hammered into everyone's consciousness and political and policing policy and whatever else, and they have freedom of religion and public Eid decorations and most people know what Ramadam is. Particularly in more leftist areas in the West, and particularly on places like tumblr.
There's also the fact that... Islam is one of the biggest religions in the world, and, shockingly, the entire world is not the West. Someone saying that a woman shouldn't be wearing a burqa if she's teaching schoolchildren in the USA isn't the same as a woman being told she has to wear a burqa, the filthy slut, (and definitely shouldn't be working when she has her husband to look after) in the UAE. They somehow forget that, sure, Christianity has shaped the laws and attitudes of politicians and voters in plenty of Western countries (and other places), even though laws aren't directly based on them... but there are plenty of Muslim countries where the same happens. And some where the laws are directly based on Islam.
But that's other countries, so who cares, Muslims are oppressed and Christians are bad and all religions that aren't Christianity all live happily together and hold hands and agree how nice it is that whitey isn't around to tell them what racism is.
I think the only time the tumblr crowd actually cared about fucked-up things happening in those faraway Muslim countries was when the Sultan of Brunei declared that gays would be stoned to death, so everyone was going to boycott the Dorchester hotels he owned, which they totally were able to afford going to anyway. Then he rescinded it and everyone got bored. Never mind the fact that homosexuality is still illegal in Brunei, you just get whipped or caned instead of put to death. Also, a woman who has an abortion will get put in prison, and it's not legally possible for a man to rape his wife (so long as she's over 13 years old).
They'd scream bloody murder and run twitter-based smear campaigns for anyone in the USA who suggested that abortion is bad or that marital rape isn't a big deal, but Brunei? That's all foreign people problems. Real Islam is the type that we see here, where there are zero penalties for being gay and it's impossible to shame your family, and the only reason a woman might wear the hijab is because she is a free and independant woman. Basically, Islamic lifestyle is just like American lifestyle. Because they don't see the ones who aren't happy, who live in insular communities or are controlled by their parents and religion or who live in actual Muslim countries. I'm sue I've seen plenty of white women arguing with women from Muslim countries about how Islam isn't misogynistic and the hijab is a symbol of freedom. So in their minds lesbians are not only totally possible, but common, always out and also dating white women who have woke tumblrs.
They don't want to say anything bad about Islam, so they write fanfiction about Muslim lesbians and cream themselves whenever they see a brown woman in hijab.
tl;dr In their minds, Muslim = oppressed, and slapping a headscarf on a character is a quick an easy way to show that oppression. Like how in pretty much all gay art, at least one of the pair has to be ambiguously brown to show that you're inclusive. Muslim means an extra level of oppression. You don't want to be told that you're not inclusive enough by other fat white lesbians.
Or maybe it's just that they have fantasies of sparking a sexual awakening in a woman from a repressed, religious, exotic background and turning them gay. But they'd never risk saying that out loud and being told off for fetishising, so they have to just pretend that Islam is full of lesbians.

the lipstick lesbian flag also had a white stripe, though i can't remember if its colors were used to represent anything specific. that creator's blog is invite-only now so her old posts aren't easily accessible; i guess she was told that tumblr users want to murder her in violent ways so she locked down.
the transgender flag's white stripe is also interpreted to represent nonbinaries, so emily probably adopted that idea for the new lesbo flag. "nonbinary lesbians" are usually just GNC people that don't want to admit they're the sex they were born as because that doesn't bring in enough oppression points. or troons
