Extremely specific Nintendo stupidity thread - The others are too general.

Is Shigeru Miyamoto at a point in his career where he has become more harmful to the creation of fun games?

Yes.

Miyamoto is just a glorified ideas guy, not too different from Kojima or Inafune, he was pretty hit or miss back in the day. It was his idea to make the Metroid Prime games first person, and those were some of the best games from the GC and Wii era, it was also his idea to turn Dinosaur Planet (a not vey good Zelda clone) into Star Fox game, that idea in the end only ended up damaging StarFox's brand.

That was in his better days, toady i'm fully convinced he's outright sabotaging games out of spite, it was his idea to make Star Fox Zero to use mandatory motion controls, it was his idea to remove every single element that made Paper Mario an unique RPG series, and who knows what other games have been affected negatively in some way thanks to Miyamoto.

Game Freak is a whole other can of worms. I have no idea why Nintendo hasn't sat them down at a table and told them to get their shit together. They've been making the same game for decade, except not in the good way like Dragon Quest.

Dude, THIS is Pokemon's audience.

Not only i do believe they don't need to get their shit together, they actually can do a hell of a lot worse and the games will still sell millions, Gen IX could easily be Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man's Sky levels of buggy, unplayable, unfinished, hell it could even brick consoles and still sell on brand recognition alone.

Pokemon is not getting better, not when a lot of its audience buy the games to not play them.

The GameCube was the last time I was really excited for a Nintendo product. I couldn’t stand the Wi and ended up giving it away to a family member after less than a year. The DS was ok but still got nothing more than a lukewarm response from me. Never had a 3DS and the legion of soyfaced consoomers that seem to be the Switch’s fanbase have turned me off of getting that (the few times I’ve played a Switch game I wasn’t that invested in it either)

Eh, might see if I can find a used 3DS and give that a try, or see if there’s a decent emulator for it. Just can’t get into Nintendo like I used to
DS is actually fantastic. What games have you played for it?

3DS is fine, but if you didn't like DS then it's a step down in most ways and really won't like it eut

I wish Miyamoto would let us have one more real Paper Mario game, not some stupid gimmick sequel based on bubblegum or paperclips or some other shitty thing he has in store.
I'd even settle for remakes of the first two PM with added content. And I'm still baffled Nintendo and Square haven't put together Mario RPG 2.

The DS/3DS is a phenomenal system to own. It was a great buy when it was out and now that all is said and done it has a library that nothing else can even come close to. Most of your favorite SNES/N64 games ended up getting ports and even a lot of PlayStation games made it over to the system as well; not to mention an avalanche of exclusive games that only really work with the system's technology.

Anyone telling you to avoid picking up a 3DS (remember, it is backwards compatible with the DS) is nuts or trying to lead you into making a bad decision. I really like the final version of the 2DS.

both the 3ds and DS have a pretty major weak point in the hinges and the plastic will break.

So yeah you're right in liking the 2ds.

I've brought this up many times before, but Nintendo merely funds the Pokemon games and has no hand in making them. Game Freak is a 3rd party company that can make games for non-Nintendo systems(and they have, both pre and post Pokemon).

The reason why Pokemon is partially owned by Nintendo, was because they got a share of the rights in return for helping Red and Green get finally completed(work started in 1990 and it was in a six-year development hell that caused one third of Game Freak's staff to quit)
Whoa, I had no idea the origins of Pokemon go as far back as 1990.

The GameCube marked a real end of an era for Nintendo, it pains me that it's now been almost 20 years since we've gotten to see Nintendo makes games for cutting edge hardware instead of stuff that's a step back

As good as Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of The Wild were from a design perspective, they could have been even better with beefier hardware.

DS is actually fantastic. What games have you played for it?

The DS is fantastic, but I feel that's more because of the games it had and the quality they had, imo the dual screens and touchscreen didn't really add all that much or at least not often and it started the trend of Nintendo's obsession with gimmicks instead of focusing on just making great games for as powerful hardware as they can.

What was the last real Paper Mario game?

Nintendo has been about gimmicky shit since at least the 1960s, back when they mostly made toys. Their video game gimmicks are just an extension thereof. I've got a closet full of plastic shit stamped with the Nintendo logo that were at one time or another supposed to be the future of video games. And some of them actually were.

The difference when it comes to video games is the gimmicks used to be side things, like ROB or the power glove, things that most of the main games ignored.

Today the gimmick is front and center and impacts all the games, even the Switch, though most of the games just use analog sticks and buttons to control like the good old days and you can play it on a TV, all the games on it still have to deal with the fact that the Switch is less powerful than a vanilla PS4, which considering the PS4 is almost a decade old is not great.

Meanwhile the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2, which is just insane to think about today, it's unimaginable today that NINTENDO could have a more powerful console than SONY.

At least with the Switch though the gimmick is a lot more worthy an idea than motion controls.

I'm not sure I agree with any of that. I find your focus on system power to be most of what is wrong with gamers and a major contributing factor that has caused the hobby to become creatively bankrupt at the highest levels. But I still feel a non-zero chance of liking you in a platonic way; so we've got that going for us. :feels:

Nintendo's innovations and gimmicks in the hardware and software spheres have been a net positive for the industry by a significant margin.

Oh! Also @Dom Cruise before I forget, I want you to know this so you can strengthen your argument. Don't use the Power Glove in this specific line of discussion; the Power Glove was made by Mattel, not Nintendo.

The gamecube had a shitload of addons and extra physical gimmick bullshit you needed to buy for it.

The only one that was worthwhile was the GBA player. When stores were discounting stuff I picked up a bunch of GBA connector cables, the microphone, the DK Bongos, and a few other things for it.

Also the N64 was comparable to the playstation in many aspects and the SNES and Genesis were close too. They only started going low budget power with the wii.

They killed off the 3DS too early for my taste. I can see they needed to boost the "portability" gimmick of the switch, but that was my let-go point. Good riddance.

From what was said, they were trying to keep the 3DS around for a bit longer than it actually did, seeing as there were things like the new2DS XL. What halted that idea was, from their own words, that sales in the 3DS and 3DS games dropped a lot more sharply post-switch than they thought it would, so they discontinued it earlier than planned because they were losing money by still supporting it.

I would recomment picking up Dragon Quest 7 or 8 if you do. DQ games tend to get repetitive really fast but they're more like "comfort food" games.

GameCube was amazing. I have more nostalgia for N64 but NGC was better. It was a pretty sharp decline from there, especially if you can't tolerate the motion controls of the Wii.

The Switch has been Nintendo at their best since the GameCube, they lost me with the Wii and Wii U, but Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of The Wild blew my ass away.

I don't know what influence Miyamoto has had on this one way or the other, I think it'd be cool if he spearheaded one last major game though.

*steps out of my time machine* Hi, I'm from mid-2006 and absolutely everyone thinks the Gamecube is trash garbage, and only really good for Smash and Metroid Prime. All of the Nintendo fandom is pretending it doesn't exist in favor of celebrating the DS getting a million great titles over the past year, and we're all hoping Project Revolution turns out to be a return-to-form, like in the SNES days.

No really, it's perplexing to have seen opinions of the Gamecube just skyrocket over the last few years. At the time, if you wanted to play video games, you bought a PlayStation 2. They were universal, like, almost everyone had one. You bought a GameCube if you wanted Smash, and you bought an Xbox if you wanted Gaylo. Gamecube also didn't get the GTA series, and had the smallest selection of music and FPS games of any platform, which were both getting more and more popular at the time. It didn't help that Mario Sunshine was a very weak entry, either.

And then I got in my time machine and emerged in the apocalyptic Shadowrun/Resident Evil future with everyone wearing masks and tranny monsters rapin' people and the worst part is that history has been revised to say that the Gamecube was actually good

I guess everyone who grew up with it is an adult now and has nice memories with it, but Gamecube praise is a completely new thing from what I've seen
