It's another one of those episodes, huh?
I will just say this, anyone who wants Obsidian to develop New Vegas 2 is a moron. I don't think NV2 being developed at all in the current climate is a good idea, I say let a good thing rest, but if it did have to be developed by anyone, it would have to be someone other than Obsidian or Bethesda. InXile or Larian would be the best choices right now, not the best overall but the only ones who would treat the game with respect. Of course, just handing it over to fans or some Russian studio would be the best case scenario, but that clearly isn't going to happen.
I think people are exaggerating how bad Avowed is. The game's writing is awful, in fact worse than most people give it credit for since they likely haven't seen anything but the first few hours of footage(it does get worse, trust me) and the RPG elements are non-existent. When you realize Avowed started life as a failed MMO, it makes more sense why these elements are missing, doesn't excuse Obsidian one bit but at least the logic is there. That said, the only thing Avowed does right is combat, which still runs circles around TES and I will say that will still be the case for TES6 considering that Starfield was just worse Fallout 4 in most regards. If you treat Avowed like a dungeon crawler rather than a proper RPG and skip every single bit of dialogue(none of it matters), the game might be enjoyable. Funnily enough, same can be said about Starfield, if you turn your brain off and just treat it as a dungeon crawler, it's actually not that bad for what it is, just a horrible RPG or FPS if we're treating it as such.
With what happened to Avowed I am not optimistic about Outer Worlds 2, but hopefully Tim Cain is tard wrangling his workers, just like he did during development of OW1 and harder at that. Let me just quickly go over your spoiler here since it doesn't really warrant much discussion. This is /v/ tier sperging from someone who clearly never played the game:
Outer Words is:
>Shallow
The game is short, but it is not shallow. The mechanics are actually on-par with Fallout, some thing taken away here but another feature added there. The core is there, it's just that the game doesn't really do much with what's there, the game is not long enough to properly engage with all the elements. By the time all the gears are spinning, you are beyond the point of no return and nearing the final dungeon. The DLC fixes this somewhat but that is not an excuse, Fallout 1 actually has this problem as well where you can 100% the game over a weekend if you know what you're doing, but it's still one of the best CRPGs of all time. I don't think OW has that distinction, but it's one of the better Fallout-like clones released in recent times. Not that hard when the latest competition it has is Starfield.
>No Replay Value
Wrong, just like when people say Fallout 1 doesn't have replay value. Both games are similar in that regard, the game ends quickly but that's a benefit. It means you can easily replay the game again with a different build to see what you missed without being overwhelmed, for example almost nobody will play New Vegas or Fallout 3 again right after they completed it, especially if they went out of their way to get as much done as possible. It is simply too much to ask unless you speedrun the game, in which case what's the point? Outer Worlds and Fallout 1 don't have that problem, in fact Fallout 1 was build in mind to be replayed at least three times(Brawler/Rogue/Diplomat all have different routes and ways to solve the main/side quests, and that's before permutations like "Your character is dumb" or "He/She only uses X kind of weapon" come into play), Outer Worlds is similar in that regard. You can be a basic brawler, you can sneak past most encounters, you can talk thru every problem in the game without killing anyone, you can kill every single NPC and still finish the game, you can sit in the back and give your companions orders to fight for you(something only Fallout Tactics or Fallout 2 to a limited degree lets you do in the Fallout franchise), I could go on. The game doesn't have as much content as many other RPGs but it doesn't need to, it's a bite sized experience just like Fallout 1 and it is better for it. If you still want more, then you have the option of playing the DLC, which is actually better than the main game in all regards. 100% a playthru of Outer Worlds takes about 30 hours, double that with DLC, where as Fallout 1 won't take you more than 10-15 hours and it does not have any DLC. This statement is as silly as it is ignorant, I will soon be approaching my 10th playhru of Outer Worlds and that would never happen if the game simply didn't have enough playstyle variety in it.
>Too Short
Just went over this, the game is as long as it needs to be altho I will not defend it in that regard. It could easily have more content, and in fact it did if you look at the cutting room floor. Play the DLC if you want more, like I said the content there is better than anything in the main game
>muh capitalism
Oh please, as if anything Bethesda has written was any better. "Muh oblivion gates!" , "Muh water purifier!", "Muh dragons!", "Muh hecckin' innocent SYNTHS!", "What if SKYRIM, but in SPACE!?(with no central design document)". Outer Worlds has horrible writing and story, not just that but it has a very inconsistent tone, but at least what's there works. The world itself is strong, there is so much you can do with it, but it's the execution that falls flat. DLC actually fixes this problem somewhat, when forced to focus on a smaller chunk of content the game is much better for it, for example Peril on Gorgon plays Old World Blues scientific atrocities straight, without as much humor, and it not only has a strong horror theme going for it but it also handles corporations being bad better than anywhere in the main game. Similarly, while Murder on Eridanos is back to the sillier "reddit humor" nu-Obsidian loves so much, the game is smart enough to pace it out, similar to how Nuka World in Fallout 4 has it's self contained levels via the different attractions, so does Eridanos. This means that no bit overstays it's welcome and each arena feels fresh and different from one another. DLC is a band-aid solution, but if Obsidian can apply these lessons to Outer Worlds 2, maybe it can be a half-decent game. We will see. Either way, the main story with The Hope and colonists works, it's nothing special but it least it gives the player long term goals and an excuse to keep discovering new locations. Better plot hook than "Find muh son I've only met 15 minutes ago!" that Fallout 4 has.
If you want to continue jerking your hate boner for Obsidian, especially if you're going to mention Outer Worlds, please do so in that thread. New Vegas is arguably one of Obsidian's better games, so malding about the company here is very womanly and impotent. As are all Bethesda fans, now that I think about it.
