This is basically the modern gameplay loop of Bethesda. No RPG mechanics. No choice and consequences. No real story or world. Just mindless shooting and looting of whatever pours out of the monster closets. No NPCs. No dialog. Yes, Yes, Yes, No (Sarcastic Yes). There is no real difference in watching someone play the game than playing it yourself.
These games are designed around streaming culture and social media. Not actually gaming or playing. They are barely games anymore. Just interactive movies and light shooters or puzzle games. The show was written the same way as well. No depth or subtly. Just humor for teenagers and immature pathetic loser types.

Fallout 4 was dumbed down for the absolute lowest common denominator. The game plays more like Borderlands because Borderlands 2 was insanely popular back when 4 was in development. The game plays more like Call of Duty because they saw the modding scene kept making mods that added sprinting and grenade quick throwing. Now add in the usual open world slop mechanics (crafting, looting and scavenging materials, base building), and you have Fallout 4.
You can't even have much of a build in the game either. Countless times I've started new games with the idea of something like a gunslinger, or a melee centered build, or a sniper build. Every single time I'd find myself by level 20 not using any of the weapons appropriate to the build because 90% of the perks are just incremental stat boosts that increases damage slightly or lets me take slightly less damage. By level 50, I'm just running around in power armor blasting everything away with a minigun or missile launcher because I've given up with doing a build.
As a turn your brain off and enjoy blasting shit away, Fallout 4 excels in that. As a platform for modding and sandbox, Fallout 4 excels at that. But as an RPG you want to invest hours or even days into making a build or having a character with actual player agency, not so much. As I said before, it's really a shame how 76 somehow does a better job at being an actual RPG than 4.

It's funny, Bethesda is the only time you'll hear me whine about updates fucking up mods. Usually I'm all for a game continuing but only if that game is worth it without mods. People rely on mods too much and are willing to give Bethesda the free pass because "modders will fix it, it will be worth it with mods." Any game not worth it without mods is not a game worth your time with mods.
That's 1:1 the Enclave Redux (Enclave Reborn Redux?) mod for OWB (Hearts of Iron 4), mixed in with the Washington Brotherhood invading at the same time as Caesar's Legion not long after you beat the NCR. On Granite's route at least.

CyrusHowler you should actually play fallout 1 it's not that hard and playing it is completely different from watching because I did both. Getting to the ending in fallout hits differently when doing it yourself. For instance my character killed the overseer at the end of the game. Then the cutsence played. You actually make the decision and role-play as the character you want to. My character was a drug addict who was a repairman, he mostly made good decisions but was also highly motivated by money and chems. This led him to work for Decker who he eventually sold out for money for chems.

Which is fucking bizarre because looting in Bethesda games is really not all that fun or satisfying. 80 percent of what you find is junk, there are virtually no unique weapons in terms of visual aesthetics or effects to find in Fallout 4. As a loot game it fucking sucks ass because there are no unique enemies to fight or things to pick up.
And I feel comparing Fallout 4 to Borderlands is, may Allah forgive me for uttering this phrase, an insult to Borderlands. That franchise does have a plot with distinct characters, you can't really influence it, but talking to the cast in Borderlands is a highlight of those games and the plot is at least coherent, even if ultimately shit. You can't say the same about Fallout 4.

So I know the Fallout 4 next-gen update had some weird modification with BA2 files making it incompatible, but for how long? Will someone attempt to make a backport of the next-gen update for anyone who doesn't want to update? I don't care much for the content, I'm more curious since I don't want to be stuck on the last version forever.

Wrong. The only relevant character was Handsome Jack. The entire cast on BL1/2/3/Prequel/Tales are just nothingburgers with almost no memorable/recognizable personalities other than oh one is a Siren, cool I guess. Also, BL3 burned the franchise to the ground, dunno what the fuck you are smoking when the comparison to FO4-BL is actually accurate.
