Honestly the choice of companions in New Vegas is lackluster, two of them are just pansy faggots, a soldier, two mutants, and a wine aunt

There's a reason why most just go with Boone unless they're doing a legion run
Boone and ED-E are easy companions to get at the beginning of the game. They provide the best offense and perks and can hold their own against some of the deadliest foes. Their perks combined are synergistic. Their companion quests are generally easy to trigger and complete and provide strong rewards. ED-E has further upgrades with the Lonesome Road DLC. They are also combat centered in a game where combat, especially when wandering in the wastes, matters more than stealth, speech, or barter.

One of the biggest negatives about New Vegas, and Fallout games in general, are how underdeveloped the companions and the companion systems are.

I can overlook it for NV at least considering how much of a step up it was over 3. As far as "things I wish Obsidian had time to fix, improve, or elaborate on," I'm not sure if better companions would be in the top 5 for me at least.

He has no identity and is seething about how the player character is effectively a Great Man of history while he’d a bitch who keeps losing. He attaches himself to symbols because that’s all he has.
Genuinely one of the worst takes ive ever seen regarding Ulysses congrats, you should thank >implying for doing all the hard work for you in making an actual point.
Ulysses would shit on both Derek Chauvin and George Floyd but then pin ultimate blame on the guy who called the police because of the counterfeit $20 acting like he wouldn't do the same exact thing but definitely would.
Ulysses would have snitched on Luigi too
I always nuke both the NCR and the Legion and, importantly, make sure to do it before confronting Benny so I can have the negative reputation from those acts erased when Vulpes and Ambassador Nigger (er, Crocker) grant me my pardons.
I only nuke legion because ill leave fucking over the NCR to bethesda and the fallout showrunners.
I find him being a pompous fag annoying, but his endings are all great. If he were slightly less sarcastic and snarky, I wouldn’t mind him being a faggot
Doesn't he only mention being gay like twice?
What's the point of a karma system if all the companions are going to either be goody two shoes or apathetic?
What's the point of a karma system period
Couldn’t get past diamond city in fallout 4 but when i tried New Vegas I was hooked it was so much fun.
I remember renting new vegas from family video as a kid and getting upset because people kept shooting me for wearing faction armor and being too retarded to understand why.

He was basically Sawyer's self-insert, based on his personal character he made for his home-made table top Fallout game.
Sawyer has compared both Arcade and himself to Cato the Younger, an ancient Roman who committed suicide after Caesar came to power. Arcade is what Sawyer wishes he could be.

because they don't find raul and going up the mountain is a PITA because of the invisible walls.

Here, a mod that removes those.
Doesn't he only mention being gay like twice?
I believe the only time he outright mentions it (unless you've got Confirmed Bachelor, that is) is during For Auld Lang Syne after you meet with Daisy where he says there's been men in his life but lovers make for poor confidants. That said he's got the swirly blonde hair and admits to a fondness for old gladiator holotapes whenever someone asks where he learned Latin, so its not like he isn't a walking stereotype for all to see, even if its not something he just brings up out of the blue. The best about him is that it seems Julie doesn't exactly approve of that sort of thing, explicitly keeping him in the back away from everyone else and at work on a project highly unlikely to go anywhere. Even Veronica only talks about her GF once the courier starts asking outright about any loved ones she's had.

I can very much imagine that luxury behaviors like homosexuality would fall out of acceptance fast when population size is paramount to the maintenance of your society, and anyone slacking off is shirking their expected responsibilities.

You'd think the other surviving Enclave members would have something to say about it, at least.. Broken branch, remnants cry.
Took two days to finish my FNV modlist (between work and obligations).

Can wait for it to crash to shit lmao
I had to reinstall mine from scratch this month because apparently something just completely broke with the original setup I downloaded earlier this year between now and then. Wabbajack really made the process pretty idiot-proof. It does still crash occasionally, but at least it runs great the rest of the time.

Makes sense, Cato was instrumental in turning Pompeii against Caesar and having Caesar declared an enemy of Rome, making his choices be laying down his army and certain death, or crossing the Rubicon where there was only the chance of death with possibility of total victory being the other.
He probably thought going full lawfare on Trump and his allies was a great idea post 2020.

It's just an enormous downgrade from Kotor 2 where most of the companions had serious issues, but then there would be a lot of engine limitations

What's the point of a karma system if all the companions are going to either be goody two shoes or apathetic?

Here are my thoughts on all the companions:

Cass is Avellone's sock puppet during the end slides and gives his opinion on absolutely everything unless she's dead before the credits roll, so killing her is imperative. Doing so at Mojave Outpost would gain NCR infamy, turn everyone hostile, and lose me a merchant, so I recruit her, dismiss her back to the Lucky 38 unless I want to do her quest for the XP (I usually have all the locations marked already, so it's just a bunch of fast travel and a little lockpicking), then slip a stick of dynamite into her pocket to dispose of her with no consequences. (I suppose I could go for the ending where the Van Graffs turn her into a dust bunny, but that would require collaborating with violent niggers, so I've never done it.) If I'm doing an energy weapons run, I like to take the Meltdown perk before dealing with Layla at the Vicki & Vance then take Cass along for it, since that encounter takes place at very close range and there's a good chance that Meltdown will cause a chain reaction that ends with Cass unconscious on the floor and I find it very funny.

Arcade is Sawyer's sock puppet during the end slides and talks like a Redditor's idea of what a smart person should sound like, so everything I said about Cass goes double for him. I'll start the quests at Bitter Springs, then recruit Arcade and fast travel back so he can talk to the doctor there and get me out of buying some quest items, then stuff him back into the closet at the Lucky 38, where I can later shove a stick of dynamite into his cavernous rectum and still be able to buy stimpaks from the Followers. Exception: If I'm doing a Legion run, I'll send him back to the Lucky 38 and then have him follow me to the Fort after destroying the Brotherhood so I can sell him into slavery. Maybe one day I'll do the thing where you finish his quest, convince the Remnants to side with the NCR, then side with the Legion and get the end slides where the NCR arrests him as a war criminal due to his Enclave armor, but that would require being in his presence for the whole duration of his questline and I don't think I can take that.

Veronica is the key that gets you into the Brotherhood's bunker without having to deal with the NCR ranger. She'll spend the entire game at the Lucky 38 except for when I get a quest that takes me into a building full of hostiles (e.g., any vault) and I want a companion who specializes in close-quarters combat.

As for Raul: I'm going up Black Mountain anyway because I like to farm the super mutants for their valuable weapons and McNamara is going to make me go there if I want power armor training (which I do). There's a lot of loot in the buildings up there and Raul makes for a useful pack mule. Once I've put away all my loot, he goes back to the Lucky 38 for the remainder of the game.

Boone is a good all-around companion, gives you a beret that boosts your stats, turns Jeannie May's head into confetti, and has a very useful companion perk. Unfortunately, he attacks the Legion on sight and wouldn't approve of my frequent runs to NCR bases to kill all unnamed NPCs from stealth for their loot, so I take him to either the Lucky 38 or my home base in Novac and tell him to wait there, so I can wander around the Mojave with his companion perk active and him blissfully unaware of my activities.

I don't see the point to recruiting Lily. I go near Jacobstown all the time, partly to farm all the bighorners along the road for XP and partly to go through the unmarked canyon from the Bleed Me Dry quest and farm cazadors for their venom glands to craft more Turbo, but I haven't recruited her since my first playthrough and have never done her questline. I understand that she says funny things if you assassinate President Kimball, which I always do, so maybe I'll recruit her in my current playthrough and have her tag along when House sends me to protect him (as is usually the case, I'm already at level 50 and not going to get XP from the quest even if I complete it successfully, so I have zero incentive to spare Kimball).

I always recruit ED-E because he's a useful pack mule and his companion perk is pretty great, especially when you consider that I always dump Perception when building my characters. He is, however, a glass cannon (less so when I let the Brotherhood upgrade him) and the music he plays when a combat encounter starts gets pretty annoying pretty quickly, so he's usually hanging out with Boone while I keep his perk active. I also make sure to grab all the upgrade boards in Lonesome Road since free weapon repairs are nice and free satchel charges means I can sell them for free money.

I always recruit Rex and do his quest, but I prefer ranged combat so he's going back to the Lucky 38 as soon as his quest is over.

Special guest: Roxie. She's dies easily and does at best moderate damage, but she tries hard and you can spawn her in up to 3 times per day, so just wait for the in-game calendar to tick over to the next day after she dies for the last time. Unfortunately, she can only help you out within the X-8 Research Center.

Edit: Veronica is good for one more thing: You can turn factions hostile to you by showing up in the armor of an enemy faction, but they don't care at all if your followers are wearing enemy faction armor, so it's fun to have Veronica come along with you in Brotherhood power armor when you go to protect/kill Kimball and watch the NCR absolutely fail to react to her.

Aw I like all the companions. ED-E is my favorite though.

I like Arcade in that it's nice to have a companion who isn't 100% up your ass on everything, but he always gets onto my ass over shit that really annoys me.
>HOUSE? YOU'RE DIVERTING HELIOS'S POWER TO HOUSE? DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND, WE CAN GIVE A PITIFUL AMOUNT OF ELECTRICITY TO EVERYONE ACROSS THE REGION! Ugh fine I GUESS it's better than helping the Legion...
I get it, he's very idealistic and naive about the ways we can help our fellow man, but there's nothing that could convince him that helping House helps everyone better than the NCR could.
>WHOA YOU'RE ON LEGION'S HOME BASE? ERM, AM I HECKIN' VERGIL TO YOUR DANTE?
I'M GOING TO KILL HIM JACKASS JUST FUCKING WAIT. does he have that little faith in the courier? I wish all the companions would question particular things you do or ways you solve quests the way he does, at least then it wouldn't seem like he's Sawyer's bestest dog that he wants to show off to everyone. I know Cass doesn't like it if you're evil and do drugs, but the only way I ever found out about the former was by forcing my karma stat to Hitler levels.

Same. I recruited her once, way back during my first playthrough when the game was originally released, and have never bothered with her again. Jacobstown is usually one of the last places I visit and she just feels like a waste of development time and resources in general. Speaking of Jacobstown, I've always wondered if it was meant to be a bigger faction like the Great Khans and the Boomers, wherein you'd be meant to deal with or recruit the super mutants to help your side. Also always disappointed that there was no reactivity between Black Mountain and Jacobstown.

Reactivty restored by The Living Desert mod.

Anyways, the only Lily's worth is her perk. Makes Stealth Boys broken.
