My favorite character I played was basically just Brad Armstrong. He couldn't cope with his young sister's suicide and ends up doing a lot of odd jobs, like couriering, to fund his addictions. Took the Logan's Loophole trait and was on a shitton of drugs 24/7, punched dudes to death when I wasn't throwing dynamite at them.

While I always like the classic 'smooth talking cowboy' I think the best character I played as was an unlucky alcoholic roboticist. He was pretty much Withnail.

The last character I played was somebody I named "Bear-Slayer". (I was pretty lazy when it came to the name)

A lone survivor of a small but fierce tribe that got wiped out by raiders. He begrudgingly worked as a courier, but after getting shot in the head, he got driven by revenge and blood lust and went after Benny. He was a scary looking dude and took some bloodied up clothes he found in a wolf den and wore them everywhere.

Eventually he met the Legion and he could actually feel somewhat of a kinship with them. Deep down, he longed to become a part of something that resembled his old tribe and despite his bloodthirsty tendencies, he did his best to do what Caesar asked of him. Getting the White Glove Society and the Boomers to aid them during the final battle of Hoover Dam. He was pretty gleeful when he got assigned to assassinate Chief Hanlon and President Kimball. (The former was cut content that was added back in a mod) He wasn't particularly elegant about it, opting to kill both of them by chucking spears into them, but he got the job done.

When Caesar was dying, Bear decided to charm Arcade into helping him before getting him enslaved to be Caesar's doctor.

When the final battle at Hoover Dam finally began, Bear-Slayer donned his special Legion armor and charge into battle, slaughtering countless NCR troops with his Gladius and in the case of the the troops that wore salvaged power armor, a chainsaw. General Oliver didn't stand a chance.

Finally finding his place in the world, Bear-Slayer remained loyal to Caesar for years to come.

The two "character" runs that have stuck with me were my first playthrough (a max luck run), and The Wasteland Asshole.

Jack Spade went all-in on an independent Vegas, after cleaning out every damn casino he walked into. He kept one chip from each as a little trophy for himself, considering the Platinum Chip as his lucky ace on the flush he'd collected along the way.

Wasteland Asshole was a fun one - his only concern was stabilizing the Strip, and he did not give one sizzling fuck about anyone else beyond that. Every quest that didn't have a direct benefit for Mr. House was "completed" in such a way as to cause maximum collateral damage for all parties - including companion quests (but without killing the companions. Where's the fun if they can't sick around to see the result?). I'm still amazed at just how much of an utter monster NV lets you be if you want to.

My favorite character so far has always been John Adams V an agent sent from a midwestern branch of the enclave. Originally planning to just scout the region but after finding yes man and the platinum chip he decided to prepare the region for occupation (the assumption is that this is a more moderate branch willing to take in wastelanders as they accept the old world government).

Many fractions did embrace the enclave after he helped them edpecially if they were willing to fight the NCR but some like the brotherhood had to be wiped out naturally. He also nuked both ncr and legion, killed all dead money companions, and has put the technology of big mt at the hands of the enclave.

Needless to say America was reborn in that run

A gunsmith originally inspired by John Moses Browning is my most recent. Found mention of him in an old-world library and was inspired to emulate him. Went around the wasteland, making guns and arming communities. Selling batches of Service Rifles, 9mm smgs, browning hi-powers, BARs, m1911s, etc to the NCR (especially since an odd mod conflict resulted in NCR troops having less guns than they should). Wandered to the Sierra Madre in search of materials, took inspiration from Elijah, and brought back some of the SM vending machines to mass-produce ammo and more arms.

Every time I befriended a faction, I'd give the leader a unique weapon and give the others better gear. The King got a customised M1911 similar to one owned by Elvis, and members of the Kings got m1911s, thompsons, grease guns and the like. Primm was fully outfitted with upgraded caravan shotguns and police pistols, etc. Etc. Westside and Outer Vegas in general got the benefits of the SM and got kitted with SM security armor.

Bro'd it up with the mormons in Zion, broke off an alliance with the BoS over Veronica and their techno-raider tendencies. Stayed on Caesar's good side long enough to get close to him with a knife and emulate Brutus. Aligned with House until his autocratic tendencies turned the character off, and began a tentative alliance with the NCR. Their habit of annexing already sovereign lands soured the relationship and a betrayal from a mod New Vegas Bounties III, for the unfamiliar ended with him going full wild-card, trying to reinforce and arm all independant communities of the Mojave before SHTF with the Hoover Dam battle.

After he was seriously injured to the point of being temporarily crippled (complete with reduced SPECIALs, attack and movement speeds) and had several companions murdered or assassinated, he repurposed hologram tech from the SM to compensate, got into hi-tech solutions, and travelled to Big MT to get more tech. Effectively, he went from John Browning expy to libertarian philanthropist Elijah.

Also I guess I also have my current character who is mostly a violent Russian mercenary with a heart of gold he'll take any work that pays but he's not above helping common people whatsoever even if he has a penchant for violent conflict resolution.

He ended up siding with mr house because he was the first major player who besides paying well was also the first major player he felt had an actual plan to imporve humanities lot in life as someone who has seen what the wasteland has to offer firsthand in graphic detail. He doesn't care for the ncr given their track record of invompetence and lack of foresight as well as their complete disregard for the people they step on for all they claim to care about them. The legion is simply put too brutal even if he did agree with some of ceaser's points and having actually seen what the west of the was like before and after the legion pacified it.

For my most recent playthrough I’ve been playing as a shotgun wielding Mexican drug runner selling the chems I find to the Great Khans. Probably will side with the NCR. Yeah they’ll bring “law and order” to the wasteland, but they pay well and the NCR is big enough that a man and his past can disappear if he wants to.

I also want to try a playthrough with the New California mod, but it feels like I have to complete everything in my first playthrough before moving onto another one.

Tbh what I've heard and seen from new California it really doesn't look that good and it has a really retarded twist near the end

Played a small amount of the mod, dialogue was cringe-enducing (with some not so subtle fourth wall breaks).

Also, it has cinematic cutscenes... That just feels wrong for Fallout.
Also the enclave as presented doesn't feel very accurate to how the enclave actually is it seems more like a massively flanderized version of the enclave

The Enclave itself is an enigma as a faction. We don’t know how big they are, whether their actual goal was to escape the Earth or kill off all life on Earth, etc.

If I remember correctly, when the New California mod was released the Enclave
were training vault residents to instigate a revolt and become Enclave soldiers. And one of the Enclave leaders turns out to be a mutant.

In my opinion, the Enclave were divided day 1. The Whitesprings bunker was purposely cut off from the rest of Enclave. Raven Rock is controlled by a computer. The Poseidon Oil rig were a bunch of isolated nationalists. We have no idea what happened to the Chicago branch.

But that is what you get when your entire organization is made up of selfish elites who wanted to ride out the Apocalypse that they helped to start in the first place.

I've thought of creating a character who is a descendant of colonel autumn (in a timeline where the lone wanderer just makes him leave after a single dialogue option) who sort of like my other enclave character is from a midwest branch who wants to occupy the Mojave. I think it could be interesting because autumn was clearly not genocidal like the oil rig branch and seemingly only just wanted to form a new government and perhaps pass his ideas on to his child/grandchild

Don't forget Granite and his guys weren't exactly on board with a lot of what the Enclave was up to since you can convince them to help you take down Horrigan. And in NV you've got the Remnants who were a mixed bag of approval, nostalgia, and disapproval. Seems to me they were just as divided as the rest of the USA was at the time, never mind the elites.

That reminds me, one of the mods I like to roll up with for my occasional Fallout 3 playthroughs is one that lets you recruit Autumn if you spare him.

On a side note, the mod Mothership Zeta Crew is such a cool concept but the devil is really in the details with that one. Recruiting an AWOL Enclave platoon to help you fix up and man the alien mothership? Awesome. Random anime hair and the leader of said Enclave platoon being inexplicably swedish? Kind of ruins it for me.

It addresses one of the things that gets me about Bethesda's writing for Fallout, though. Introduce a game-changer like the alien mothership and then... Ignore it? I mean, a lot of people understate how much Alien tech was important to earlier Fallout games. The psychic nullifier, AI tech like Skynet, bio med gel, and (if I remember correctly) plasma tech were already based on alien tech before Beth ever touched the series. It's always interesting to me how much people over-blame Bethesda for the alien thing.

However, you take control of a goddamned alien mothership and then... Leave it to rot in space, base game. What the fuck? It's like the Institute's teleportation tech, once they fix their power issues. Total game-changer for the entire setting, but it's just treated as a cool setpiece.

God damn it all your talk of NV has forced me to play it again. I originally played it on the PS3, so I bought it off gog, and just started last night.
If you're playing on pc get an unofficial patch mod

Also does anyone have any good ideas for an enclave build? I've already done one but I kinda want to try something different

Its too bad bethesda forced their hand with the deadline. Imagine this game with a year or two of polish. IIRC their most complete area is the area around New vegas. The majority of the quest named characters, and plot is all there despite it only taking up 1/10 of the map.

My favorite part about this area is how nonviolent it is. Compared to the rest of the wasteland with raiders and such around every corner, the fact that the quests arent "go here kill people, get this" is refreshing. Plus the sewers are great, its way faster than trying to move above group.

Next playthrough im going to beeline up there, the speech checks are extremely low for being a mid-game area too bizarrely enough. I want to see how well i can do as a Mel Gibson in payback esque rogue.

Also I'm still of the opinion Get The Gringo is the closet we'll ever get to a fallout adaptation. Its like watching a fallout DLC;

guy ends up stuck outside of his normal playing area

Guy has odd ways of getting the stuff he needs (cash and guns)

Guy ends up involved in a plot bigger than himself

Plus the prison feels like a post apocalyptic civilization. All the amenities of pre-war life with a few exceptions.

Since we're talking about NV, perhaps you all can help me.

I got the Ultimate Edition off GOG sometime ago, and I don't know if I just suck at the game or if I'm going at it wrong. Right now I'm doing missions for Jason Bright, and I got myself stuck trying to get that part that I don't have nearly enough money for nor do I have the bartering skill to get it for free. But even beyond that, I keep getting killed by everything and I only survive because of the overpowered weapons and armor I have because I'm playing on the Ultimate Edition. I put most of my points into guns and agility so I should be a somewhat decent gunfighter, but some situations feel downright cheap like those mutants in the basement of the rocket museum (I only got away thanks to the insanely powerful shotgun I had). I don't know if I'm rushing through the game and I'm underleveled or if I just plain suck at it.

It hasn't been all bad though; when I got to Nipton and the Legion members bragged about the size of their dicks and how they'd crucify anyone who got in their way, I blew them all to bits with my grenade launcher. I tell ya, that was satisfying.
