You know, its been a while since I posted in this thread so here it goes. This is going to be me sort of theorizing on how, all things considered, The Capital Wasteland has a bright future ahead of itself. This is going to be from stuff in F3 and F4.
For starters, yes, all things considered, TCW was one of the worst off locations in the Fallout universe as of yet. Its the site of SEVERAL direct nuke strikes. For all intents and purposes, the whole location having any life and standing structure at all should be nearly impossible. All that aside, even if you ignore that, the whole area is a shithole, filled with raiders, supermutants, cannibals, raiders, The Republic of Dave, eldrich buildings, raiders and violin playing grannies (wait, that one is okay).
However, I think by the end of broken steel, the Capital wasteland is actually looking forward to a bright future. I think its several factors but a few of them are
- The Brotherhood of Steel (but Im going to mention their issues)
- Harold
- Project Purity
The brotherhood of steel, at least its F3 incarnation, was far more "benevolent" than its main branch selves in F1 and 2 (they werent necessirely malicious in the originals but they were far from angels either) and while that may go against a lot of the principles they started with, I think it may be more beneficial to them as a faction to take this route. I really think that the main branch of the brotherhood was ignoring a HUGE problem with their existance...eventually the world is going to rebuild itself and their isolationist nature would begin to turn that rebuilt world against them. Needless to say, by the time FNV happens, the main branch of the brotherhood of steel is nearly gone after long conflicts with the NCR. I do think that most of their downfall was their own doing, instead of embracing change, they remained arrogantly "loyal" to their principles even when their faction began to suffer for it.
But anyway, back in TCW, The brotherhood didnt have many competing factions (ironically the fact that TCW was such a destroyed shithole worked for their advantage), so them helping the locals more and even accepting them into their ranks put the people at their side. They were the only major force holding off the growing Super Mutant population from spreading too far from the ruins of DC, that was already an easy way to get the support of the local population, however, their victory against the Enclave truly made people look up to the brotherhood. By the end of F3, the brotherhood is more powerful than ever, especially now they have Project Purity. The issue with them was that their elder was mortal and eventually passed away from old age...and aparently his daughter wasnt part of the plans so she got unceremoniously killed off between games (personally I would have prefered to meet an Elder Sarah in F4 but I digress) and Maxie took over after multiple incompetent elders. With that said, the brotherhood, despite taking a new route (sort of a hybrid of the old and new mentality) still seems to keep TCW safe and prospering under its wing. The biggest issue is if the brotherhood isnt growing TOO powerful for their own good...even if Maxie isnt malicious, it doesnt mean that eventually some elder wont be. So while they are "shining" knights of prosperity, that may change someday.
Now to Harold, our lovable tree mutant. You could just kill him like he wants, however, I think its the far more beneficial decision to allow him and his roots to "spread" to the wasteland. That isnt technically harmful to him in anyway and it allows actual healthy green to grow on the once dead irradiated soil...he even comes to accept this fact and comes to term with it. Now consider this, in a few decades, who knows how much of the green will spread? Combine that with the healthy waters of Project Purity and the TCW is not only getting clean water but clean greens as well. TCW could be truly on its way for a nature's rebirth brought by Harold.
Now for project purity, it seems rather obvious how the prospect of clean water could benefit the whole area indefinetly. Perhaps after a while, the entire river could become clean from radiation and any wastelander can say that any water that doesnt give you even SOME radiation is a rare find. Now if its possible to replicate this tech isnt entirely clear (doesnt help that almost everyone involved in the project has either died or left the capital), however, if it is, then having multiple Project Purities running on different parts of the capital could make sure that the whole area has clean waters in just a couple of months, irradiated water will truly be a thing of the past.
Ironically, The Capital Wasteland could truly live up to its "Capital" name and be a new "capital" for humanity to get back on its feet. Yes, there are things like Super Mutants, raiders and many MANY other dangers and problems, but on the grand scheme, it really feels like the wastelanders from TCW have a bright future to look forward to
