A forum where he's slowly being eclipsed by a future
retired SEALS Marine rape survivor who keeps getting
kicked out of his own house...and a manchild who is so
much more fucking detested than Chris that this very
forum is producing an amazing colab project to have a
reanimated cyborg cat kick the shit out of its ignorant
former master.

Even the ONE place on the internet dedicated to
discussing Chris is starting to forget him.
Who the hell are these people? I'm curious now.

I've never fully figured out why Sonic is tardnip. I really want like a deep and scientific analysis performed by experts, cause shits weird.
A factor that I don't think has been mentioned yet is a kind of "collectibility" aspect, which is common to a lot of franchises that are popular with autistics (Sonic, Power Rangers, MLP, Thomas the Tank Engine, Cars, Pokemon is probably the most obvious example), in that the characters are non-human but similar, with clear identifying features. I'm not hugely familiar with Sonic, but most of the characters seem to be "[X] the [Y]," they're all brightly-coloured bipedal animals with big heads, hands and feet, huge eyes and spindly little limbs. There's a "set" of them.

I think you're onto something there. Gotta catch 'em all, after all. But I'm not so sure about Sonic. Aside from the games, were any of the other characters prominently featured in the accompanying media blitz? I seem to recall seeing merchandise with Tails on it back in the day, and I would assume Knuckles was equally popular, but Sonic seems to be... solo most of the time.

Growing up I was a huge fan of Mega Man and the Mario games but I wasn't really much of a sperg for any character in particular. Sonic was really more of what I'd play when I went over to my cousin's who had a Genesis instead of NES or SNES. I can't say I've played any Sonic games since the Genesis ones and really I don't have the desire to play any newer ones either.

It's interesting though, speaking of Mega Man, I was pretty upset at Capcom over Mega Man as time went on; I sort of felt like the series I loved was being both kind of ignored and being turned into something altogether different, it's also a bit annoying that x8 ended on a cliffhanger. I didn't talk about it much or get involved in some grand debate, but privately I had a little resentment at Capcom. Then when Mighty No. 9 was announced, I was pretty happy; I gave $50 to the kickstarter, told any friend I thought might be interested in it, and now that it's confirmed I couldn't be happier. I couldn't be angry over the story being different or the characters being changed - sure they added to the experience, but I'm mostly interested in the gameplay and I'm pretty sure most people would agree with me.

Sonic on the other hand from what little, I know has a convoluted story, an inconsistent play-style from game to game and isn't particularly appealing to a broad audience (again from what little I know). Chris, if anything, should be thankful his much loved series is getting something of a reboot when it's barely relevant at all, as many of us have said here.

I know, right?! Let me tell you, I've been HUGE a fan of Dragon Ball/DBZ since I was like ten years old. I remember when Dragon Ball Evolution was set to come out that all these weeboos were going apeshit; blowing up the internet everywhere and bawwing about how much they changed the story/characters, etc etc. I knew all of this going into the theater when it finally came out, but that didn't deter me from seeing it or make me want to full-on "boycott". Sure, the movie was a total piece of shit, but it was exciting to me that people were being exposed to these characters again (or incarnations of them, rather). Dragon Ball/Z absolutely wasn't as popular as it had been years before DBE was released; I was just ecstatic that the series was getting attention and that a movie was being made, period! I don't see how Chris could complain about something as irrelevant as Sonic's arm color when I didn't even open my mouth to bitch about Goku being in high school until after I saw the turd. C'mon, really?

As I say, I'm not hugely familiar with the Sonic franchise, so I could be barking up the wrong tree on this one. I admit I've not really seen much Sonic merch featuring anyone other than the titular hedgehog, but I've never really looked for it. I was never into games growing up, and my first thought when Sonic appeared was, "Wait, the hero is a hedgehog? Those stupid bastards can't even cross a road. What's his enemy, a bonfire?"

Sonic only started out as a solo act, and Tails began the precedent of introducing a new character in each game. It didn't take long for Sonic to lose a lot of his unique appeal by being surrounded by bland variations on his theme. To be honest Sonic was only cool for about 3 years, by 1995 kids had moved on and started playing gorey, violent games. Autistics and spergs stuck with Sonic and kept it going until now.

What I find interesting is that where I live (UK) Sega basically won the console war during the early 90s, the Sonic cartoons were just as popular as they were in the US and there were even kids Chris's age when he won the Sonic sweepstakes who were getting national coverage for playing Sonic.

It's not like there aren't people drawing Sonic recolours in the UK but I've never seen any hardcore adult fans like Chris, with Sonic having been so popular you'd think they'd be at least a few, there's plenty of UK adult Bronies and UK adult Pokemon fanatics.

The only difference I can see is instead of the Archie Sonic comics a now defunct comic named Sonic The Comic was popular, I may be way off the mark but Chris and other famous lolcows seem to be huge fans of the Archie Sonic comics, Chris names it as a "good influence" and A-Log does impressions of the characters on his channel.

I was a big fan of Sonic AND Megaman, as well as Zelda and Mario. When I was younger, video games were an escape for me, and each of the games I mentioned had different things that I liked about them. I'm only familiar with their older forms (NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy) and back then their stories, including Sonic's, was a lot simpler. I also collected the Sonic comic books. Back then the stories were more straightforward without the clusterfyuck of characters and shitty recolors that populate the Sonicverse, and when that clusterfuck started happening is when I lost interest. The new games just don't interest me at all. The older ones (Genesis) are a lot better and have more replay value, in my opinion. I still play the old Sonic games (along with the others I mentioned) on emulators on my laptop for fun. Sometimes I use a Game Genie to make things interesting, I do this when I'm not in a mood to write. I'll go months without playing a game, and then when I'm in a mood I'll choose which game I want to play and then beat it and not touch it for more months.

I don't think that a game that is really appealing to autistics is a bad game, but fuck the fandoms can get really spergy sometimes.

The funny thing with Sonic is that the appeal and quality of the original games was lost pretty quickly. He exploded at a time when Mario was king, and Yoshi was just a mount and not a playable character. The competition for game mascots was weak, and they represented a lot more. Game characters were simpler and Sonic's look translated to the game screen incredibly well. When you look past the first 2 games, you had a lot of other similar character types pop up with better graphics. By the mid nineties Sonic's edginess seemed tame and low quality Sonic titles plagued Sega systems. In the long run Sonic has appeared in more mediocre to bad games than great ones. People Chris' age remember Sonic's debut strongly, but those introduced afterwards have a high likelihood of playing a bad Sonic game well before they played a good one, if ever.

People also forget the simple fact that small sprites back then meant you had to make smarter design choices. Sonic's arms were flesh colored for the same reason Mario wore overalls, which was to visually pop out the arms against his body, to create a quick read on his silhouette when he moved around, especially since he was always shown in profile in a side scroller. Nowadays some game artists seem to think that just because we CAN have ALL THE DETAILS with more sophisticated 3D engines means we should and stuff gets over-designed and confusing, congested and well, ugly. At any rate, I get that Sonic doesn't need his fleshy arms now because he's got lots of real estate on the screen and several thousand polys.

All that said, I actually like Sonic's blue arms better, there's less of a creepy wife beater-ish look to him now. Sorry, Chris. XD

Well, once he won that sweepstakes there was no going back.
No, like how successful Sonic was in general.
Honestly, I doubt Chris would actually commit suicide because "Boo hoo, they slightly altered my hero's design." I think he's just saying stuff like that to be dramatic and fish for sympathy.
Well, he did learn from the master. :snorlax:

You don't really look for them IRL...

You guys ever wonder if we're doing Chris a disservice by discussing him on this site and reinforcing the worldview he has of people giving a shit about what he does?

I don't see how us pointing, laughing and sneering (about how OPL's relevance to SEGA's powerbase can be measured in negative numbers) counts are reinforcing his worldview. If all he hears is derision (followed by SEGA complete and utter failure to comply to his demands) how would that convince him that he has any say or power?

Oh, wait....in CWCville he is on the Board of Directors of every game company on Earth-C.

More than once sentence in discussion is grounds for an autism diagnosis.

Because the autists on the site don't know what "Autistic" means and are attracted by the shiny, shiny primary colors and hit the "Autistic" button mindlessly. They want the entire site to be an endless sea of multicolored puzzle piece icons.....because that way they can take the spotlight from those filthy, filthy Bipolars.

Sonic Boom (the convention) has been running since 2011 which I imagine was before the game/TV series had been developed. Will Chris start commenting on videos of the Sonic CD theme? Rage at things that happen to have the same name NOW!!!
Didn't Sega have like 2 other Sonic projects that were called Sonic Boom at some point?
