The answer you'd get from the majority of medical staff is "we cannot give info about any of our patients." Unless you're family, and your name is on a list of people who would be able to talk to anyone in one of those facilities, they're not even going to acknowledge your question about whether or not a patient is there and just bypass with the most generic answer for the sake of HIPAA; if you were family, and your name was on a list, you'd know whether or not the patient was there in the first place.
