Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

When does the game get good? The novice training was annoying.
Honestly, dungeons and trials really.

Novice training sucks but that's because you need to account for the lowest common denominator. And in this game, the lowest common denominator is retarded and are overwhelmed by a basic 1-2-3 combo.

Problem is I can't say for sure cause those early trials and dungeons are very slimmed down in terms of mechanics. So when you're used to later trials they feel way more boring than if you were a newbie doing them. Early on you're basically shown where every attack will hit and given loads of time to move. Mechanics do get a bit more complex later (for example, the latest raid tier had a boss who would show you fire/ice AOEs, and then afterwards would show you which one he's channelling to, which would cause that AOE to grow and change the safezone).

Basically, you're saying it won't get any better later? Questing in Gridania is really mundane and it doesn't really drag one into the game like WoW and TERA (before both were turned into a fat turd).

No basically they're saying it does get better and the reason it's boring early on is because the tutorial drags out. You also have to understand that even low level content is being run by max level players so they're level synced really high and things will die very easy. You've barely gotten into a game that's a few hundred hours long. Maybe it's just not your thing but that's really passive aggressive to pull the old "so what you're really saying...". If the early stuff bothers you that much you can buy a story skip and get to modern content. Having played both WoW and TERA, FFXIV's questing content is no more tedious than either of those. WoW leveling dungeons are even more of a snooze fest with how everything dies the moment it's picked up by the tank. WoW doesn't even offer any kind of raid-like boss battles until you reach actual end game raids.

wasn't meant passive aggressively, it was a direct question which is hopefully not a bad thing because that is how everyone talks in central europe. The character models, Hyur Highlander, are really cool and it's pleasant that it's not oversexualised (which was a bit bothersome in TERA). I only asked if it is not getting better because right now it's tedious and the most I do is one quest every few days and then log off because I get bored. Maybe it's just Gridania and the area later gets better, no idea. That's why I'm asking in this thread.

It does drag for quite a while, especially if you've experience in other MMOs.

I'd argue it probably doesn't pick up until near the end of ARR. The MSQ is really irritating in the early game up until about the mid-30s, but it does get better.

If you're not getting hooked on the world or the story at all, it might be a rough go.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a hard time caring about the plot and notice a tendency to skip dialogues and trying to get something done. It is a really nice looking game but man, sinking my teeth into it like with WoW seems impossible.

The game really drip feeds content to you, which is unfortunate, but it is a good way of tard-proofing the game (although it isn't foolproof...) and the devs have made numerous statements about wanting to get non-MMO players into playing the game, so you kinda just have to grin and bear it.

I do think Gridania is probably the worst starting zone out of the three, which doesn't help, either. Although they all converge at lvl 15 or so, so if you've made some headway already I wouldn't restart or anything.

That mostly depends on what you consider fun. If you're looking for good story, then it's ramping up soon enough. Endgame stuff? Hours and hours away. You might as well buy level skips if you don't care about the inbetween. Non-MSQ content? That shows up once you hit 50 and finish the original A Realm Reborn storyline.

If you're in ARR, that's just cause ARR kinda sucks ass. It's story doesn't really follow a natural flow and you can tell they're basically just rushing you towards "oh shit another primal awakening". The villains are basically not developed at all, and none of the characters really are developed at all. I know a lot of people tend to skip dialogue and whatnot cause "collect 5 bundles of blankets for N'vharafacrarakt" isn't really important. At all.

You're lucky to be going through after they reworked some of ARR though. The final dungeon in ARR, The Praetorium, was notoriously hated by literally everyone before it was reworked. It was an hour long dungeon with 29 minutes of unskippable cutscenes, multiple parts where you had to just ignore the enemies and run to the next interactable door or you'd be left behind, missable interactables that could cause you to walk back round to the obscure thing you had to interact with, bosses that you'd just faceroll cause they were so easy, but also had obtuse mechanics like not being able to do damage to the boss for the first minute of the fight for no reason.

That entire dungeon got reworked on 6.1, and thank god it did. Here's a vid discussing the old version if you're interested: https://youtu.be/mKJ3q8qae3g

How long are other dungeons? I don't think I want to spend an hour on dungeons, especially with long cutscenes...

All dungeons are timed to take more or less 30-40 minutes to finish. Very apparent when you play with the NPC companions which they have added to most extant dungeons in the game. A group with players who pay attention can easily shorten it to 25 minutes or so, 20 minutes for ARR/HW dungeons which can be cheesed to an extent.

Hold on, there's no need to run dungeons with other players? That seems like an advantage.

Nope. It's something they started with Shadowbringers, where you get to run MSQ relevant dungeons with a preset group of plot-relevant NPCs. They later extended this system to almost all MSQ-required dungeons in the game. (The only ones I remember without this system when I left the game are the post-patch Stormblood dungeons, which are expected to be patched to include these in the future).

A boon, if you just wanted to fuck around doing your own thing. Downside is you're going to take exactly 30-40 minutes to finish each one.

Where do people actually talk? In WoW it was world chat or region chat. Do others see it when I use Say? Because no one has reacted to me so far. I asked a dude where he got his cute companion and was left on ignore.

If running off the default font colors, /say can sometimes blend in with system messages and other shit and people might miss it. Or that just might be me being retarded.

Since you're new, you can get into the Novice Network. It's a sort of global chat where (presumably) new players can ask questions, but people largely just use it as a chat room. There are a lot of insufferable cunts in there, though, but are easily identifiable by the crown icon next to their name.

You can also use shout (zone-wide) or yell (large area, but not the whole zone) if you have a general question.

There are linkshells, which are sort of like chatrooms, as well as Free Companies. Keep in mind that a great deal of XIV's community is pornsick, troons or other undesirables and they may be irritating as fuck to deal with.

There are no speech bubbles like in WoW, right?

What does the crown mean?

I came to ffxiv because a family member said it's not as bad as WoW communitywise (e.g. troons, etc). Was hoping not to be in a mine field, having to be careful where to step and walk.
