A trademark protects a word, phrase, symbol or design (or a combination of these), that identifies and distinguishes the goods or services of one person or company from those of others.

The reason this is big is because it's a lot easier to prove a violation of a trademark than it is for a copyright. Well...more accurately it's easier to unknowingly violate a trademark than it is to violate a copyright.

They aren't trying to put a ban on all reaction videos through a copyright, they're just trying to take the word Reaction away from reaction videos via a trademark...Essentially, if this goes through; people can still do Reaction videos...they just have to find a new word for "React"....

I have to admit this is some Fine entertainment but I'm not getting my hopes up that this will somehow crush the channel.

The internets has a serious ADHD issue so chances are before too much damage is done the drama lamas will have moved on to another topic.

What really needs to be invented is a way to inject Ritilin to the internets as a whole.

The problem with the internet is that its collective rage lasts about 24 hours. It will be interesting to see if people stick with this.

Oh, I don't think it'll end within 24 hours. We've seen drama lasting longer - it's proportional to shit one person or party tries to pull. Like ACTA or SOPA. When change of laws &/or cutting the freedom on the internet is an issue, it spreads like wildfire.

Right now I don't see FinedBros even close of putting out the fire they started under their own asses. And they've been gathering the fuel for it for years now.
Granted, they won't lose all their subscribers, but how many of those left will actually generate views? They're considered lepers now and such bad reputation will be very hard or even impossible to erase. Not after so many skeletons have been dragged out of their closet.

I hope they fall on their hands and knees like dumb little bitches they are.

Well, I don't have any illusions that this will destroy them, from what I read they make a lot of money off of sponsors. If there is bad enough taint on them it could lead to them losing sponsorship and put a dent in them.

I'd like there to be a way to audit their subscribers to see how many are bots and inactive channels. Another factor is despite a couple hundred k unsubing, I bet they are still watching those videos, so the views are going to remain high, if not increased through this.

I think there is a big difference for the average person between getting caught up in a trend and unsubing and stopping to watch new videos they probably enjoyed enough to sub to in the first place.

I really don't get this.

I mean I get franchises and brands, but licensing their brand reaction videos doesn't make any sense to me. TV-Channels license shows because it is a proof that the concept works, they buy the design and some of the the know-how so they are on the safe side. But everyone can set up a small studio and point a camera at an old guy watching a video - and then upload the entire thing to YouTube. If you fuck something up you can just try again, until you got the concept right. You don't need to find a slot for your video or think about re-runs, it just sits there and collects views and comments. There is virtually nothing to loose after producing these things.

Besides that, the Fine Brothers have nothing to offer apart of a few pre-rendered sequences and Photoshop files for the effects. They also have another problem: People in 'other countries' who are interested in reaction-videos either speak English and probably already watch their work, or they don't speak English and therefore are not familiar with their brand. So featuring the videos of new creators will either pull viewers away from the Fine Brothers (since people will probably prefer 'reactors' from their own country), or such a feature has no impact at all.

I highly doubt that the backlash from this will completely wipe the Fine Bros from Youtube but how they go about this over the next few days will be a big factor in how much more online 'credibility,' they lose.

If they come forward and say they're dropping the React World idea and not trying to trademark the use of 'React,' in videos titles and say how sorry they are then the majority of 10-17 year olds who support them will post on their blogs 'look how sorry they are you guys, everyone makes mistakes!' then they'll retain most of their viewership and this will go away. If they continue to fight this and say they're not doing anything that bad and expecting everybody to just accept this then their decline will get worse and they'll make less and less money, it's that simple.

I get what they were going for, but man oh man did they go about it the wrong way.

Not to mention that the internet has very little respect for intellectual property and despise the DMCA for very good reasons. With the recent drama about DMCA abuse and Sony attempting to trademark "Let's Play" they announced this at the worst time. While there is no way they could have avoided some backlash, they probably could have avoided a lot of the heat if they stayed quiet longer and wait for some of the heat to die down with the latest fiasco. People are fed up with the abuse of intellectual property enforcement.

I don't think this is going to kill their channel off completely, but at the very least their fuck up is going to damage them severely, and they will not recover. At this point an apology video is the only thing they can do to now as a last ditch attempt to regain their image.

But it won't work, the damage is already done and I bet you a million gazillion internet points that if they do make one it'll be sugar coated with things like

"We're sorry for presenting React World in the wrong way"

"We understand this is not something you want, so we're going to go back to the drawing board and make it better."

"We still want to protect our brand just like other content creators do."

So pretty much "We're sorry, but we're not cause it's not reall our fault and we still want to come up with a way to sue you for what we think is ours." Apology followed by excuse followed by a threat.

Basically a Chris Chan style apology video.
