The whole "Freddy, Gregory and Vanessa are actually the Afton siblings reincarnated" theory is such a copout. Hope the free DLC debunks or atleast retcons it
Same here.
If I may sperg... at first I actually liked FNAF.
It's underappreciated that the first game was basically a classic arcade-style game with modern graphics and a horror theme. Seriously how many old games can be basically described as "if thing gets past this barrier, you die?" (Arkanoid, Warlords.... hell I think I've even played one that had literal door locking mechanics). Which I think was part of the appeal.
As for the lore, it was interesting at first but worked also because it was a basic urban legend, almost deliberately like something you'd hear at school. "Kids were murdered and stuffed in the suits!" The story ended satisfactorily with the third game where the killer finally got his comeuppance.
For me a huge problem was when the characters started getting names and suddenly the story was about this guy named Afton who was like a mad scientist or something. The thing is... this adds nothing to the story, in fact it detracts from the overall experience because its less universal--now the people involved all just happened to know this one guy really well. It's pretty much the equivalent of a badly-done "Lex Luthor is actually Superman's father!" twist.
Plus like.... thing is, the whole digging for lore style works when the lore itself is basic, but it becomes autistic when you're trying to figure out things like the exact name of each ghost who haunts each animatronic. And like... why do I care? The way the story is told I don't get to know them
as people, they're just names on a tombstone to me. Like, what the fuck do I know about Cassidy? Does she like toy cars? Is she into knitting? Does she have a cat named Fluffbutt? Did she write bad One Piece fanfiction? All I know is she's a name that gets associated with some arcade game called "Princess Quest".... oh, a girl playing a fantasy game where she's a princess. Real distinguishing trait there. Let me guess: she loves good things and hates bad things too.
And just... they keep leaning into it. I was actually a little excited when I thought Security Breach might be a reboot, but no, its all the Afton shit again.
Bottom line, any series where the Game Theory video basically acts as a plot synopsis... is a bad series.
