Flags & Vexillology

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Chicago and Washington DC probably has one of the only good city flags that I have seen.
big shout out to @Marvin for the best US state flag + the Baltimore flag which compliments it well.

Sometimes life imitates art:
That skit is such total, utter shit. There's clearly no love of flags and the joke is that hurr durr he's autistic and so are flags.

Though that skit, when I first saw it, sent me into a fucking tizzy trying to figure out what the blue flag with the lion is. Turns out I was not the only one.

The lion has a name and is important to lowland culture and vexillology.

The older flag is better. Text on flags is fucking awful. I give exception to Chinese and Arabic flags because their scripts look good.

Examples of shit flags with script:

Florida (too fucking tiny, no one can draw this from memory)

The Makhnovia flag (anarchist Ukraine flag). Flags are not a fucking poster.

Slavs in general have a horrible tendency to just scribble their Cyrillic all over a solid color and call it a day. Especially communists.

You sure, Null? You want New Zealand's flag to be another fucking leaf?

Union Jack's weird btw. For some reason the full version isn't fully symmetrical:

When Null said 'easy to draw' I mumbled "like fuck it was" and had sudden primary school flashbacks to geography class, I dont remember it being as symmetrical as his example, but it was definitely like your example. Could never understand why the diagonal red stripes were offset like that.

The skit utterly misses the point that the best thing about vexillology, besides the obvious aesthetics, is the symbolism not just behind the flags, but what was attributed to them during use. People fucking fought and died under these things. They weren't just inspired by the stuff of legends, but ended up inspiring legends themselves.

For example, back in the Middle Ages the County of Holland was inherited by the Bavarian counts through the usual marriage cluster fuck. Bavaria already had its distinctive flag:

Such a hostile takeover immediately led to civil unrest. One faction supported the new overlords (mostly burghers and cities) and were disparagingly called 'Cods', because the Bavarian banner resembled fish scales (and cod is a particularly voracious fish considered to be lower class food). Their conservative enemies called themselves 'Hooks', as in 'fish hooks' as a result. The Hook and Cod Wars ended up being over a hundred fucking years of GoT tier intrigue and civil war, and they thank their absurd name to the warring parties taking their nom de guerre from meming on a flag. Also this is the last time I'll sperg about Dutch history I swear

Sardinia's is pretty wicked:

According to the Spanish tradition, it was a creation of King Peter I of Aragon, celebrating his victory at the Battle of Alcoraz in 1096. It was said that St. George miraculously appeared on the field of battle and that there were four severed heads of Saracen kings at the end; thus the red cross and white background of the St George's Cross and the heads of four Moors.

Blackbeard's was better. Skeleton holding a glass of hooch in one hand and stabbing a heart with another.

You also have some shit that's just so bizarre it's memorable, like the Isle of Man flag:

Sicily also has a leg-triskelion thing like the Manx flag. The head in the middle is Medusa

speaking of Sicily: the flag of the kingdom of the two Sicilies

probably one of the most overdesigned flags featuring the insignia for half a dozen orders, the flags of 15 other countries and royal families and some really detailed chains and crown

Bruh, great seals get super complicated because they incorporate all lesser seals. For large territories they are very big. Check out Russia's, which incorporates a lot of the smaller "Rus".

It was definitely a jab at home-made autism content but I think it accidentally did expose a lot of people to the interesting parts of vexillology, which had the net effect of making people actually look into the real content for it.

Also that Maryland flag is a heraldic crest as well, for the first Lord Baltimore so it's an interesting holdover of old world design while being relevant American vexillology. The red & white portions represented one european family while the yellow & black chevrons another and Lord Baltimore had by birthright the privilege of displaying both on his crest. Maryland was a bit divided on the American Civil War, and the split also broke up the flag; southern confederates briefly flew the red and white cross portion to represent themselves and the Confederacy, while Union supporters flew the black and gold chevrons alone.

That's the main reason autists and nerds hate BBT so much. There's nothing genuine about it. A true flag autist would genuinely love the subject of their autistic obsession. So even a comedic skit about it should have something real to it.
