One could argue:

I was pretty naive back then but in hindsight it's insane to me how often the official narrative changed and generally everyone just went along with it anyways. Even the idea that it might've come from a lab was mostly regarded as a conspiracy theory for a while until enough evidence came out over the years that it was unreasonable for them to keep downplaying it. I also remember reading that a pandemic "preparation exercise" took place in the fall of 2019 where they specifically simulate a coronavirus outbreak, which is pretty weird especially with how they were seemingly trying to portray it as a completely new virus towards the beginning of the actual pandemic. Not to mention certain people investing a lot into pharmaceutical stocks at around the same time. That said, I still think one of the worst aspects of the whole thing is that it did a lot to advance censorship and the whole "stop the misinformation" narrative. The internet seems like a far worse place since then in a lot of ways. People were also unwilling to question anything but on the bright side, it kind of feels like I've seen a reversal of that recently? Not too sure.

It's like protecting your identity is now the odd thing to do rather than the normal state of things.

This is so true. I've had employers turn down interviews because I have no social media presence, questioning why I don't have one and what I have to hide. Women you meet on dating apps vary from instant blocks of "omg that's a red flag, are you a serial killer" when I say I have no social media, to the point where I actively avoid females who flout their instagram in their profiles.
