That's not what apologies should be about.

You can never really know if someone's truly repented, and there are many who commit crimes which warrant death even if they show remorse. What the apology's about is showing some humanity and humility in the face of your sins and working towards being a better person even if you won't succeed. Even an attempt at that puts you above the Saddam Hussein's of the world who walk to the gallows showing no remorse whatsoever.

I may be too cynical, but let's face it, even being accused of rape destroys people's lives. Actually committing the act does worse. Pedophilia is even worse still. No amount of apologies, not even real, genuine apologies, in the world could get the public to think better of you again. They'll be thinking "So what if he apologizes? He still had sex with a woman without her consent!"

That's a problem rapists have to live with, I guess.

This is usually the exception, though. Chinatown is still a great movie no matter how despicable Polanski may have been. However, if you actually watch Chinatown, it is a movie only a person with serious issues could have made.

Given that Chinatown involves a pedophilic villain who ultimately gets away with his crimes, I've actually sometimes wondered if the film has hidden pro-pedo messages...

If you believe in Death of the Author, it does. If you don't.... Well, that's sort of a gray area.

Well, the villain is portrayed as almost unspeakably vile, but by the highly charismatic John Huston in one of the most chilling performances in cinema.

While I'm not sure if he's a "former" celebrity as he's still getting work, there's been some talk that comic writer Brian Wood may be a CWC-style sexual harasser. I just want to preface this by saying that as far as we know he HAS respected consent and is thus nowhere near as bad as Savile or Cosby, but a number of women claim he had tried to sleazily pick them up at cons for casual sex. The first to come forward was an indie comic writer who claimed that Wood had asked for sex in exchange for giving her comic a good review to a panel of industry big shots; when she refused, he gave it a bad review instead. Another claimed that after rebuffing Wood's advances, he spread slut-shaming rumors about her.

What made this story so interesting is that it dropped just as Wood was finishing his run on X-Men, which used an all-female team and had gotten a ton of praise by both male and female readers. There was serious discussion for a while that he may have written the book as a misogynistic prank and/or to cater to a strong/dominant women fetish.

I'm pretty sure most of the rock stars from the 70s fucked an underage girl at some point. Some of them were also quite clearly pathological predators who were looking for girls as young as possible, like Jimmy Page. But this isn't really funny. Just horrifying.

Then there's Courtney Love. Her awful behavior ranges from the amusing to the horrifying, and she doesn't get nearly the scrutiny she deserves. There's a whole blog dedicated to how terrible she is, and it also does a great job at calling the media out for their hypocrisy. There's something really vile about how a serial domestic abuser who beat her daughter to the point where a restraining order was filed gets to be treated as a paragon of feminism by the likes of Jezebel.

She's a woman. Women can do no wrong. Check your privilege, shitlord.

I wonder if tumblr would excuse a controversial celeb's actions based on their gender/race/etc.? I imagine a lot of female celebs have gotten passes just because they're girls and boys have hetero cooties.

Although tumblr does seem to dislike people like Iggy Azalea.

It happens all the time. Courtney Love's just the most vivid modern example that comes to mind. There's probably many more if you're willing to look.

Even well before Tumblr, those who'd fly the flag for them if they were born in a different era have done shit like this repeatedly. Look at all the apologies people like Jim Guterman have made over such things as Chuck Berry abducting, raping, and prostituting a 14 year old Apache girl. "He's a POC and he invented rock and roll! He should never have been sent to prison!"

Then there's the shit with Mumia Abu-Jamal.

What bugs me is that they don't even dislike Iggy Azalea for the right reasons. They don't hate Iggy because she's a terrible rapper who makes awful music, they hate her because she's a rapping white girl. Even outside the Tumblr circle this is the prevailing rallying cry of most Iggy bashers.

Much as I love Azealia Banks, it's ludicrous to get upset over someone because they're imitating characteristics of people from different races. If anything, it needs to be encouraged since it's the only thing that's ever been consistently effective in repairing race relations.

It's horrific how far backwards our society is falling.

You know, after it was revealed he put cameras in the women's bathroom of his restaurant to spy on them, I'm not surprised. Or how about Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 14-year-old cousin?

It's not like it's a minstrel show, you know. But the idea that "only black people can rap" goes back to pretty much every other musical genre they invented, too.

To be fair, at least according to Wikipedia there was strong speculation even at the time that the Berry case was rigged due to racism.

Then again I haven't even heard of him before today so he could've been guilty as sin for all I know.

She was 13 actually. Plus there's the slight technicality that he wasn't exactly divorced from his previous wife at the time.

That reminds me of a guy named Doug Hutchinson who's not really a celebrity, but he is a recurring "Hey it's that guy!" on TV. He marries a 16-year-old in his 50s, and the two actually ran off to Nevada where 16 is legal to avoid her parents who were trying to stop them. As far as I can tell she consented, but STILL.

Oh, no doubt race was the reason he was sent to the can. Jerry Lee Lewis is just as bad and he's never been locked up a day in his life. Berry was still quite guilty of everything he ever went to prison for. Really, he should've been sent to the slammer again after he was caught sticking hidden cams in the women's bathroom of his restaurant.

By the way, it doesn't really surprise me that a lot of celebrity perverts were most popular in the '70s. I never lived through the '70s but I get the distinct impression hearing people talk about them that basically everyone was extremely horny that decade.

Henry Rollins (most famous as the vocalist of Black Flag and frontman of Rollins Band, who did the song Liar in the 90's) isn't too bad (probably a bias since I love Black Flag), but he's said some pretty awful shit in the past. When Robin Williams died, he pretty much said he was an awful parent for "leaving behind his children". There's also a pretty lulzy video of him complaining about EDM music.
He's also massively insecure due to fucked up shit happening to him in the past. Now he's doing spoken word tours and voice acting gigs, so at least he's not at the very bottom of the barrel.
@Mrs.Rollins may provide sauce to this

And sauce I will provide!

http://www.laweekly.com/music/henry-rollins-fuck-suicide-5016770 This is the original article about Robin Williams, then after everyone flipped shit (me included) he wrote an apology: http://henryrollins.com/news/detail/an_apology. He really pissed people off, knowing him I thought he would talk about mental illness and suicide but he decided to be a dick. William's daughter Zelda said something in response to it, I think but I can't find it.

This is the EDM video, and here's a YouTube poop version of it!

"Go be fat somewhere else"

He's not all bad, his acting is improving I guess and I do like reading his stuff but he's trying too hard to be edgy to stay relevant. Most guys follow him for the edge, and alot of girls just think he's sexy with the muscles and "bad boy intellectual" attitude.

I understand his feelings in the first thing he wrote, but you can see where it went off the rails a bit. However, it's an entirely reasonable response to respond to a suicide by actually being angry at the person who did it. That's natural.

Note, the second is an example of how you actually fucking apologize for something. Dobson should look at that.

Also I'm pretty sure Henry Rollins is a current celebrity, not a former celebrity. He even currently has a TV show (on History Channel).
