To nobody's surprise, Hamilton in Mercedes is 0.5s faster than everyone else in Australia practice.

Good news though, Mclaren-Honda can do more than 11 laps in a row...

Any chance of reviving this thing for the 2019 Season? All the pre-season testing has show that it's gonna be more than just the top three teams who'll be on the podium.

Despite all the promise of pre-season testing, Mercedes once again starts out with a 1-2.
Mclaren at least seems to have arrived back in the mid field while Williams continues to be, well, Williams.

Update: Boring as fuck Mercedes 1-2 result.

Williams manages to be slower than last year. Good job, lads.

Ahhh, activity again! Good to see! Yeah, it was a lacklustre race for most part, but the track is like that unless it rains or a safety car comes out at right point. Bahrain should be better!

But the side stories from Race 1 are interesting:

Bottas-Can he keep the momentum or was it a one-off/bad day for Lewis?
Ferrari-Bad day, or deeper possible issues with the PU?
Leclerc/Vettel-Again, hard to say how close they are, but I think Vettel will have a battle on his hands.
Honda-Looking good, see how they do on a higher speed track like Bahrain.
Midfield-Seems a lot tighter, hope it stays that way all year. Should get a better grip on who are at the head of the bunch next race.
Williams-?

Bahrain is gonna be a completely uneventful event because it's the most tilkedrome of all tilkedromes. A vanity project for a persian gulf tinpot sheikdom where races only happen because of oil money.

Well, yes this is true. I was looking a bit further than that at the straights to see where the engines rank. But hey, for me a race is a race, some are shit, some are great, but at the end of the day there will be a winner and we will be one step closer to who will be the WDC and WCC for 2019.

We should know how the pecking order looks when we're back in Europe but if 2019 is going to be the sixth Mercedes victory in a row I will quit.

Even if Ferrari somehow manages to get the best car, all they have is an inexperienced kid from Monaco and some German mediocrity who chokes when he actually has to fight in the grid.

But Ferrari were top of the timing sheets in testing, so clearly they have the best car - Autosport said so!
Joking aside, I suspect it's something to do with the wheelbase that Mercedes have persisted with, before the season there was a small rule change allowing larger fuel tank capacity, with the compromise teams would have to make within the regulations is a longer wheelbase to facilitate this larger fuel tank. Since Merc have persisted with a noticably longer wheelbase throughout all of the seasons in this turbo-hybrid era, I would not be surprised if they have taken advantage of the expanded fuel capacity and run less on fuel saving without trying to change what their car is fundamentally.

Aside from that though, I don't expect Ferrari to do all too well this season since they proved in Australia they are too stuck in their ways of having a first and second driver, with them not allowing Leclerc to pass Vettel despite every time he dropped back immediately rabbitting up to the rear wing of the German. I think, personally, that Leclerc is the quicker driver, and given his time last season fighting in Formula 1.5 he certainly has learned how to drive with other cars around - which is a major weakness of Vettel which was highlighted at Monza last season, to name just one. However I agree with you, he's inexperienced compared to all the other drivers he's (presumably) going to be racing, excluding Gasly, so whether or not he has some rookie mistakes down the road or not is yet to be seen.

Apparently Mick Schumacher is going to do some in-season testing for Ferrari this season.

I don't really care if it's a publicity stunt, I felt all the feels reading that.

Forget the fuel tank thing. Apart from the fact it is an inflatable bag, no team will ever fill it up to the brim. They will always try to run the least amount of fuel possible for laptime advantage.

Sebastian Vettel, chokemaster.

Not even half way through the season and he's fucked it without any external input, four time world champion by the way.
Sad for Leclerc though, kid did everything right and was clearly the fastest of the weekend, I don't know which would be worse for me though - losing positions due to a failure or just retiring on one.

The Renaults failing one after another, in the same corner, in the same lap was about as hilarious as Ferrari giving Kimi's engine to Leclerc heartbreaking.

Boy, does the the French Red Bull driver suck. At this rate, Kvyat is going to sit back in the main team.
