Formula 1 Discussion - And favourite driver?

Certainly a better and more incidents race than AusGP. Yeah, Renault. man they best get on top of that engine shit damn quick. Both them and McLaren are going to lose places in the WCC from where they finished last year.

Still early days of course, but its going to be interesting to see how both "#2"s fare in China. Vettel needs to win to get back in the WDC, and if that don't happen needs to finish ahead of young Charles. He has been talking lately about F1 being more of a show than a sport and he might not stick around for the '21 overhaul. (If that even happens with all the politics and powerplays at work whenever any kind of rules or governance are trying to be agreed to). If he has that attitude or feeling, his head isn't fully in the game. He shouldn't be thinking about 2 years from now. Worry about that in the off-season. Either Charles got him rattled or he is losing interest or isn't truly gelled in with Ferrari, like MSC was. Whatever it is, he is driving shitty at the moment.

As for Bottas he got to stamp down on Lewis hard in China and show him Aus win wasn't just a one-off and he is going to be Nico 2016 the whole year. I hope he does as we need another intra-team battle to give Mercedes a headache to deal with. And if Lewis is headed to matching MSC in WDC, I'd like to see him have to fight like a dog to earn them. That would solidify him and not have some say just like Vettel's 4 WDC, had the best car. He's had a few easy WDCs and a few battles, so to see him tie MSC with the final two being like a 3 or 4 way fight up to last race and he comes out on top would be quite a way to tie the great Red Baron.

Red Bull. Honda. Still early to see how this is going to play out. I will be very interested to see how they do on that mammoth back straight in Shanghai. Its weird to hear old glass eye bitch about the aero on the car and not the engine for a change tho! Apparently they figured out issue during the 2 day test, so if they did so, than this should be a good opportunity to see the engines ranking in the top speed at the end of that straight. Think one of them will hit 350?

Gasly, I am still giving him benefit of doubt. Leclerc was shit in his first couple races with Sauber. Whether Gasly is just adjusting like Leclerc or he isn't good enough for RB, we will see. It will all play out, but I ain't ready to throw him to the wolves just yet. But he definitely needs to start finishing in top 6, preferably a time or two before Max thrown in. As for Jos' son (man, wonder what it was really like for Max growing up with that guy as his dad!) he is looking good and I hope the Honda is up there with the big 2. RB need to be right there with the 2 ahead and then we will have a 5, maybe 6 if Pierre comes through, fight for a bit. I remember back when Frentzen was in the mix up to the end for Jordan, 1999 I think?, if they finished a certain way the top 4 at end of year, or the race before the last of the year, would be within a few points of each other. Something like that. But it would be great to see by summer break top 4 or 5 separated by like 10 points. Pray to the gods that this is a prophecy boys and we have a season worth yakking on here about lads!

Dan and Nick, they'd be better of racing everyone on bicycles. At least they wouldn't break down. I was hoping Cyril's BS leading up to start of season was real. Nope! He looks like a seedy guy, should have not doubted my instincts! Like he said in the NF series, they are the largest car maker. Full stop. That don't mean your the best. If anything it shows something is very wrong in your F1 dept. I really hope, not just for the 4 drivers who use their hardware, but for the sake of having all 4 engines pretty much within spitting distance of each other, they don't have an inherent issue that can't be rectified until they bring in the updated engine, which is probably a good 4 races away at earliest. Get that engine fixed and start acting like a works constructor and not a team like Williams! I subbed in Hulkenburg in my F1 Fantasy picks this week and it was a roller coaster watching him miss Q1 (bad for my team), then get up to 6th!(serious points in store to extend my 1st place lead in my kid's BF's league) and then BANG! (my overall lead is less than week 1 now) and he was my turbo driver too.

Mid-field seems nicely packed up. I am liking Magnussen and Kimi so far, the rest for me are clumped together and no one else has stood out greatly, though Norris actually was great last race. Its just weird thinking McLaren has improved that much this year, but again early days. Will be a hoot to see McLaren finish ahead of Renault and they get cucked again by their customer team like they did every year they supplied RB. But yeah, mid-field has the prospect of best actual driver shining through since they are so close together. Kinda like 6 or 8 drivers on same team. I hope it stays tightly packed throughout the year as it will be a good way to see who is best drivers with mid-field teams and who should be driving in Indycar or another series.

I may actually go to Montreal in June, was just talking about it with my daughter's mom. She is going to a big tattoo fest up there and pretty sure its same weekend as GP, so I might go. I went to the CDN GP from 2000 to 2003. Here is a clip I shot from 2001. I took a fair amount of footage last 3 years I went. Check out the sound at the end of the first lap (about 5:00 in) as the V10s roar by! If I do decide to go, I won't need the earplugs I bet like I did for that race. Unbelievable the high pitch sound of the old V12 and V10 engines when they were at full song. I can see why so many complain about the sound! Anyway, that's some shit I have to offer to keep the discussion going. Feel free to sperg out similarly!

I generally don't think much of F1's podcast beyond just background noise whilst working, however the recent one for the 1000th not actually 1000th race with Murray Walker is a very good interview. No commentary team I've heard comes close to what he provided in entertainment - sure, he commentated through Hunt/Lauda, Senna/Prost, Schumacher/Hakkinen which provided something great to talk over - and those great quotes, "There's nothing wrong with the car except that it's on fire", "The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical".
I highly recommend this for a listen, although I apologise for the interventions for advertising through the podcast - whilst I appreciate free content needs something paying the bills, they are poorly placed in my opinion.

They need to bring back mid-race refueling. When you've got cars on different tank-stop strategies, you get cars with different topspeeds and accelerations, this leads to much more overtaking and is much more interesting to watch.

Also, watching Hamilton creep up on Schumacher breaks my heart. Hamilton is not a bad driver, but by god, he's nowhere near as good as Schumacher was in his heyday.

I tend to disagree, I think both are probably very close in terms of talent as drivers in their respective eras but I do think Lewis is better. When Schumacher was running, open testing all year round, Ferrari built the Fiorano circuit for just that, Ferrari to this day still have the ear of the FIA (historically mocked as Ferrari International Aid). Schumacher had the best car for so many of his championships, undoubtably, whereas Lewis in the McLaren in his first couple of years the car was ailing and yet he took the sport by storm. Schumacher absolutely beat his teammates in points and performance, because Ferrari told them (Irvine, Barrichello) to pull over, Lewis has beaten his teammates by being the better driver (Bottas, Button, Rosberg). When competing with people outside the team (Schumacher and Hill) Schumacher tended to not play the psychological game so much and often seemed to let it get to him - albeit not much - whereas Hamilton proved last season he broke Vettel who of course being a 4 time world champion is such an excellent driver and won off the track as much as he did on.

I'm terrible at written communication of my thoughts, so apologies for how retarded this reads, I'll refrain from commenting on the refuelling because that's super sped shit for me.

Lewis is a very good driver but until recently did not consistently beat his team mates. Button finished higher in the standings several times. Alonso crushed everyone of his so far.

Irvine by his own admission said Schumacher was out of his league. He was really that good.
He also had lots of close run championships in a car that wasn't the best.

I pulled the trigger today lads. Bought tickets for Montreal. Be seated in the left grandstand after they come out of the hairpin to make their long blast down to last two turns. I am getting old so didn't want to deal with the grief and lengthy walk to the main grandstands on start/finish line. Those seats were close to $600, but the GS I bought today was $225. So they will do.

Will throw up some pics/vids when I return. Anyone else making it to a GP this year?

What exciting year you chose to go to a race.

I see a great many more boring Merc 1-2s..
I know. That was the big debate on whether to go or not but things aligned in a way I couldn’t be in Montreal during the race and not go to it. Kinda hoping for a 2007 or 2008 deal. Go Gasly! LOL pray I am sitting there on Sunday getting soaked. That could be the only hope to keep me awake.

But yeah. This season turning out to be a huge joke. At least the F2 and F3 are a bit more interesting.

A real shame about Niki. I'm gonna miss his joyful demeanour in and around the Mercedes garage. A huge loss for F1, as a whole.

On a happier topic, I watched the Pau GP over the weekend. Anyone else check it out? Great race and amazing result!

And how about Alonso and the 500 story?

Update: Had to love the Driver of the Day voting! LOL Even F1 has its fair share of trolls I guess.

And please lads, again, pray for me to get soaking wet in Montreal. I looked at 14 day forecast, and while of course it can, and most likely will, be different by time that weekend rolls around, it is showing rain potential! Fingers crossed, with rain being the great equalizer they (used to) say, it may be the only race Mercedes doesn't win this year!

Hey everyone, Ferrari fan since 2000 when i was ten. I've been to one grand prix, the infamous US 2005. My all time favorite driver is, of course, Michael Schumacher. While I still live and die by Ferrari as a team I've grown quite fond of Verstappen recently! Although given the way this season has been going having someone somewhat in the hunt for race wins to cheer for has been nice.

I enjoy how laughable McLaren took to attempting to win at the brickyard. It's an American officiating body, is IndyCar, and so all measurements are regulations are in stupid measurements (feet and inches, how horrifying). However Alonso failing to qualify would still be a very real probability when you consider Pippa Mann qualified a position ahead of landing in the last row shootout for bump day with the same speed as Alonso did that day.

No matter how many times I call it the Max Verstappen award, it continues to be given as such. It's similar to the Fan Boost in Formula E, every race you just expect Stoffel Vandoorne to recieve it - and probably top the voting, or at worst come second.

But hey, Monaco was an excellent, super exciting race with dozens of on track overtakes, I just couldn't look away. Mocking how dreadful the race was always going to be aside, Leclerc's overtaking into La Rascasse was bloody brave - I remember trying to do that in a game from 1996 and it being tight, and that game had cars from 95 which were pencil thin compared against the current breed of car.

Just finished it. Obviously, I'm not old enough to remember any of Murrray's commentaries live, I gained interest in the sport as he was exiting it, but his voice is still iconic through the hundreds of classic F1 highlights. I definitely second you on this being worth a listen. Always love to hear the old F1 dudes talk as there were so many great characters throughout F1's history. As I imagine is to be expected with a bunch of people dedicated to pushing machines to their limits. A question for the group, if Senna had lived, how do you think he would be viewed today and what do you think his role in modern F1 would be? For me I think that for someone like him the racing bug is hard, if not impossible, to shake. I can see him being a paddock feature like Prost, Stewart, and Lauda have been for sure. Do you all think he would have taken on a management role at Mclaren or Williams?

I don't think he would. You think of all the great drivers in history you could put alongside Prost, Lauda, and Stewart I doubt your list goes beyond five or six drivers before you start questioning whether the next name you think of belongs on that list. Of those drivers, most haven't gone into a team, and I'd argue most of them - for example I'd put Mika Hakkinen in the list - they have a similar temperament to the three named before, very calm, very approachable with the media.

I think two we have to strike off the three are Prost and Lauda. Prost is French, and given Renault is part owned by the French state to ensure it keeps bringing money into France they will undoubtedly want a figure head the sport respects representing the team to try and enable the motorsport to be more self-sufficient (Come sponsor us, we have Prost co-piloting the ship). Lauda is Austrian, whilst that certainly isn't German as Mercedes are they speak the same native tongue and are culturally very easy to blur the lines between, so it makes sense for a German team to get a German(-speaking) icon who has a history of knowing what to do outside the car also to advise on a completely new project for the manufacturer.

I don't disagree with your statement regarding an itchy right foot, Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell both regularly demonstrate this by going back into a car (Brundle recently making it clear he wants to win the Nurburgring 24, preferably in the same car as his son), but that makes it very hard to be part of a particular team - Prost probably can't go and drive a Ferrari from a couple of years back if he really wanted to make a bit of media about it. He'd have to be part of the press gang if he really wasn't ready to be out of a car, as we have seen Rubens Barichello, Damon Hill, Martin Brundle, Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, which I think we could have seen with Senna however I suspect he'd have been offered a job by the FIA before that, and probably been persuaded to go into Brazilian politics before that still.

I think, if he kept going, he would probably have gone the same path as Emerson Fittipaldi, Jean Alesi, had a kid who got racing and became a name in history who supports their child coming through - you see Jean at every event when F2 is there because his son is racing, but you don't see Jean, you see his name - and that's what I believe we would have ended up with Senna if his name was to carry on in racing (not due to death, of course).

Ayrton Senna would probably be less revered if he had lived, if only by the virtue of having his career taper off with a few shit seasons and being a mortal instead of a martyr. That said, he prolly would just be a major media personality in Brazil and have some kind of a business with his name on it.

Bruno Senna probably would also have been better, if only because he would have been around to mentor the kid into being more than just a mid-fielder with a famous name.

And Seb choked another win away, though the tifosi will probably blame the FIA for not being Ferrari International assistance for once.

That was a bullshit penalty and you know it. Dude was out of control, what the fuck was he supposed to do? F1 is a fucking joke, you have 0 competitive balance and when a car somehow steals away a victory from Mercedes then THAT happens. As it is, the category is currently a massive waste of everyone's time.
