Formula 1 Discussion - And favourite driver?

Well at least we wont have a whitewash of Mercedes wins this year. But yeah, the heat is their big weakness so pray for many more hot races!! Leclerc did good to get the Ferrari up to 4th. And no safety car today! That is a rarity at Silverstone! I wonder how that would have altered the results.

bit of an off-topic question but is F-1 2018 any good
Not at all, any F1 game since 2001 abouts (although 2005 is decent) is a progressive decline followed by a massive drop off with 2013 and beyond. ALL F1 games made by Codemasters are dodgy reskins, within the game files Renault are still Lotus for example, and no proper implementation of rules or safety enforcement which makes sense - everyone is getting excited at the prospect of them maybe implementing a wet track flag to be displayed, for some reason. The optimisation is laughably poor and the UI flat out does not work with mouse and barely works with keyboard which you cannot properly rebind (on par with Halo Wars rebinding shit if you know how that went). Even being free I'd advise against getting it as it becomes another statistic of users on Steam owning an F1 game made by Codies.

today of all days Vettel can't say shit to ferrari because he spun all by himself on the first lap.

Ferrari, Renault and Racing Point have all lodged their formal appeals while McLaren has withdrawn from theirs (why pay for a legal team when the other teams are already going at it). Williams haven't spoken either way but the deadline for the formal appeal is tomorrow morning so we should hear then, I'm guessing they won't as they not exactly flush for cash at the moment.

Hulk in talks with Alfa. Quite why he would go there in their current state is another thing.

As suspected Williams have opted not to formally appeal. Again probably smart, let Ferrari and Renault use some of their near infinite resources to challenge it and preserve your own (relatively) meager reserves.

Red Bull have largely stayed out of it but said there should be harsher penalties and Mercades' involvement should be scrutinised further. They say they're starting out of it because "enough teams are already appealing" but I'm wondering if it's more they don't want anyone poking around at the Alpha Tauri too much.

I'd say it's almost a certainty that it is because of the relationship between RB/AT. In the early days it was a completely public secret that they shared all the data they could between the teams so both of them could get to a competitive standard quicker, and you have to assume that the particular aspect of the relationship remains since it would be beneficial for the driver program which Helmut Marko runs - if the AT car is basically just a bit delayed from the RB drivers getting promoted don't need to learn a completely fresh car.

Definitely, get Ilott or Shwartzman in the car they've both been doing some great drives in F2 this season. Mick Schumacher is another possibility, I don't think he's quite there yet but that name is good for sponsorship. Move some new talent into the sport.

Better yet, get two in. Giovinazzi has had a few seasons and just isn't going to be a top talent and as much as I like Raikonen I don't really know what he's doing there.

Perez back for the Spanish GP

In other news Merc are worried about Barcelona. The track is usually hard on tyres and has never been run in August, when it's at its hottest, before. The tyres are the hardest available as in the first Silverstone but let's hope for some major blistering again with the high temps.

No more special qualifying engine maps after Spain.

Infact it's going to be no more PU mode changes at all. Same for all of qualifying and the race. Pick between reliability/fuel efficiency and power.

If the plan is to try and hurt Merc's mode in hopes of leveling the field, I think it'll end up hurting teams who can't just bring extra fuel and still be faster than everyone else. They should at least leave room for a limp mode and safety car mode.

I think it's a good move in general. It means the drivers have to moderate how much engine they're using themselves not to run out of fuel, blow the thing up etc. I can see the FIA argument of the modes being a driver aid.

This isn't 1968. If a part is about to explode, they can't just drop revs by a bunch because of the inherent nature of modern F1 engines. Besides, they already were in complete control of what setting the engine would be in via the dials on the wheel. That's how they moderated the engines and how they managed their fuel. It's a driver aid in the same sense that having a gearbox is a driver aid.

Hey so some more interesting off track news on a number of fronts, as is the norm. Haas in 5th, Hard tires sucking HARD per the drivers, Sainz seems to have a serious cooling issue.

Hope we have a good weekend of action and tyres may be again a focal point.

Mainly just wanted to drop this site here. Some of you probably know about it, but in event anyone doesn't, its independent and usually has a ton of great articles. When I first found it many moons ago, it was known as F1Fanatic, but now its RaceFans. Here is the link if of any interest:

Well here we go, let's hope for some overheating tyres on the Mercs to make for an interesting (and preferably not 1 stop) race.

Looking like it will have to be the mediums that suck for them. Seb ain't exactly lighting it up on them so hopefully that's a good sign!
Will be interesting now to see where Albon ends up. Masterstroke if others go on Mediums or 2 stop?

Perez could be in for a good race. If anyone can make a one stop work it would be him.

A bit of rain would be good.

Well a couple of weeks rest and onto Belgium. It's a track I always look forward to so let's hope for a good race.

Do we think Bottas is getting sick of Lulu's crying about muh niggos?

Screenshot_20200817-220418.png

I mean between choosing a thin blue line in-between the black for his halo colour and complaining about the black overalls and livery for the car it feels like a subtle "go fuck yourself you whiny fake diversity points piece of trash" to his knobhead teammate.
