Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

A lot of people grew complacent with NISA over the last decade and didn't remember they're strong contenders for the worst, most incompetent localizers ever. It's nice they got a reminder.
Course theyr are. They only get jobs because theyre the cheapest. Whatever happened to wryward and the girl from the Trails in the sky translations xseed did? i remember NISA making a big deal about getting them back when they got CSIII.

And on top of all these mechanical incompetence, there's political incompetence where I'm fairly certain that NISA has had plenty of their localizers come out and say they change shit they find "distasteful".
Had the related vids deeply buried inside an USB stick, but here you go

"we can work around things that might be a little sexist in Japanese"

"Don't worry, the jokes will still be funny after we edit them, sometimes funnier!"

Hitting x to doubt very, very hard on that one.
They not wrong. The jokes are funnier. Not as normal jokes, oh no no no. They far funnier when you look at them to see what kind of a joke got hired to translate this shit,

Isn't at least one of those a goon? I would be wary of any goon translators in Current Year.

Chinese Game Censorship is just goofy:
This is the game based on a Japanese novel/manga/where the main character is a skeleton with a skeleton army.
Did they censor the sexy stuff?
No.
They did censor all the skeletons though.
As Red Letter Media said about Ghostbusters (2016), "Your communist government thinks the movie is witchcraft."

Wyrdwad didnt work on it at all, he moved to japan and is doing corporate translations since he was basically forced to quit XSeed for refusing to censor things. NISA are terrible but Marvelous/Xseed are just as bad now anyway.

Got examples of Xseed fucking around? I haven't seen anything, but I'd like to know.

I recall him saying he got his credits removed from every game after akiba's beat because they censored something involving KKK and he didnt wqnt to take credit for that.

Maybe, i know Wryward is a commie for sure, but one with some semblance of principles. IIRC, what he really wants is for japan to not make "problematic content" in the first place so they don't have to censor.

Could the localization be bad if the creator was involved?

This comes to mind.

There are no heroes in the localization industry, only gatekeepers. Best to just accept that now rather than to continually get crushed.

Speaking of, I FUCKING HATE PLAYSTATION I HATE THEM SO GOD DAMN MUCH

Most notably, a significant change that has affected all versions — including Xbox and Nintendo Switch editions — has been made in two scenes that were deemed racist. On top of that, Sony has asked for more changes to be made to content elsewhere in order for the game to release on PS5, PS4.

-Wonky translations in general even in their early days. I think people weren't paying attention back then because of NISA constantly getting the spotlight with its screw-ups and Tom being a good PR man for XSEED. There is a website storing the entire english AND japanese scripts of the Legend of Heroes games, making very easy to check up comparisons these days. In XSEED's case, the characters dialogues were often rewritten to "spice them up".

The "Men are pigs after all" does not exist in the japanese text.

The latter bit about crying himself to sleep doesn't exist either.

I think that one was posted already in this thread, if so, my bad.
And there were the flavored english-only messages when opening chests too.

-XSEED managed to pressure Marvelous to add gay relationships/marriage for all characters in Rune Factory 5, instead of helping fixing the damn game that still has many bugs and performance issues to this day. It was even later included in the japanese release which sparked negative comments from the nippon userbase.
The English translation of Rune Factory 5 began in March 2020, right as XSEED transitioned to a work from home model. One of the last things we did as a team in the office was to gather around and discuss the character names and other localization questions, a subject we covered in our first localization blog. We had asked for same-sex marriage to be included in the game as early as 2018 and felt optimistic after it appeared in STORY OF SEASONS: Friends of Mineral Town. However, as we started reviewing design materials and text files, we grew worried that Rune Factory 5 didn’t have it.
We asked our main liaison with the development team—Marvelous’ localization department in Japan—to check their plans for same-sex marriage. They confirmed that it was not planned for Rune Factory 5, but that they would ask about the possibility of adding it. Thankfully, the game’s producer at Marvelous and others within the company agreed that including this feature was important and began to push for it. At the same time, Marvelous’ localization team laid some ground rules for its implementation to make sure that players would have the same experience regardless of which character they pursued.

-Certain PC ports of singleplayer japanese games handled by XSEED require an internet connection in order to properly boot up, such as Fate/Extella Link, No More Heroes & NMH2, Kadokawa Jet Girls. The company is also prone to weird decisions with its obsession for english dubbing, even if it means spending a big budget on a mediocre title (Akiba's BEAT) or delaying the international release date of a game as a result (Granblue Fantasy Versus). In the case of the latter, I assume Cygames wasn't pleased to the point the fighting sequel release doesn't seem to mention XSeeD whatsoever. Would be even funnier if Cygames dropped the english dub entirely for being a waste of ressources.
