Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

Jesus christ, that's fucking agonizing to read. Surely, someone could have thought up a better way to handle that in english so that it was still legible.
Neill Corlett's translation did, 22 years ago.

No really, the baby talk dialog was also in the official SD3/Trials of Mana SNES translation within Collection of Mana. The fan translation released 19 years earlier turned out to be better than Square-Enix's own.

Not exactly a censorship per se but it still applies
in God of War 3 you had an achievement that required you to kill Poseidon's lover to open a gate, it's easy to get since it's a story-related achievement
in the Remastered version it got removed for some reason

Nothing that affects the game but still find it funny its removal
Also the achievements for getting all the horns and killing Hades got their names changed

God of War 3 is a perfect example of how fast times can change, had the game come out just a few years later that scene would have caused a MASSIVE shitstorm, like I'm talking the game getting pulled off the shelves level of scandal.

Instead in 2010, when people were not yet complete retards, nobody cared, but it feels alien today to even think of Sony releasing a game like that.

They censored the shota's knees and elbows. Holy fuck that's funny.

This has to be some sort of AI and not manual censorship.
It's got to be an AI, but the fact that any company would take one look at that and sign off and anyone would even dream of paying money for that bullshit is insane, literally insane.

Meanwhile it's "stunning and brave" to put butthole pics on OnlyFans, I'm not joking when I say we live in an unhinged and unintelligible cultural climate, there's no logic to be found.

It has to be an AI, because it's censoring anything that looks like tits/ass crack, including the letter Y.

Wow this is both unnecessary and lazy. Clearly they didn't test it out to make sure it works before releasing it to the public. If you don't want people to see fan service like this then only include family friendly titles and don't bother to add these types of stories in the first place.

In Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, Nintendo naturally demanded that all crosses be removed. So all the church exteriors were decrossed, a puzzle got changed and the crosses inside the churches were changed to obelisks.

l2-churches.png

However, they forgot to alter the ruined tileset. And there are quite a few yeeted towns in the game. In one of those destroyed towns Maxim and Iris go into the church to pray for the dead. In front of the cross. :lol:

Not sure how that scene got past the censors. But I'm glad it did.

Also a whole puzzle was deleted because they thought Americans would be too dumb to know that "X" means wrong and "O" means right. Like no one's ever seen a game show or anything. :roll:

It's probably Jap law. Porn can't be exported.
A few of those have English print releases that are sold in the USA. Also if that's the law, they really don't enforce it well.
I've seen speculation it's about compliance with the appstore's TOS

Yeah, there are a slew of examples of Nintendo censoring crosses and anything religious. The censorship even made it into the Jap '93 rerelease of Zelda 1:

Note how they didn't bother translating "Book of Magic" into Katakana, it's just still called "Bible".

Personally I feel like this thread belongs more towards the Multimedia section (because people here are talking about bad localization of any foreign media in general and not just necessarily video games) but that's just me and I didn't even knew this thread existed until now.

So I'll say this, I can understand why you may want to cover and censor stuff that is geared towards kids. Stuff like Fortnite and maybe some kids cartoon for obvious reasons shouldn't have stuff that is inappropriate for minors; rating systems such as the ESRB and the MPA rating system exist for a reason.

What irks me the most is when localizers start treating adults like literal children thinking that some mature themes and topics shouldn't be shown to an adult audience and sometimes insert their unwanted politics in them and this is done many times especially towards Japanese entertainment where most Japanese content creators aren't afraid to write stuff that they want to write under normal circumstances but when they're localized outside of Japan those localizers feel the need to somehow play the moral busybody on behalf of some ideology anyway.

I mean why censor or bastardize something that is clearly made for a mature audience in the first place? The sad part about this is that the stuff the localizers do now would have been excusable if this was the 1990's and the 2000's back when many of those nerdy hobbies like video games, anime, and manga were niche hobbies and they geared those things specially towards kids but this isn't the 1990's and the 2000's anymore because nerdom in general has now grew up and are no longer the same stupid kids that would've ate anything up a long time ago but they still think that this sort of thing is somehow still justified despite video games, anime, and manga no longer being exclusively for just kids anymore.

Most people are not stupid, especially with the power of the Internet these days where anyone can cross-examine and see what a localizer did to a work and a lot of times it's just the localizer acting like a moral busybody anyway.

Well, the title is clearly "Game" in a games forum section. Then anime/manga thread has a loose restriction on culture wars/doom posting, which I understand not to shit up the thread so much, or overlapping/repeat with some other threads and all thanks to InsolentGaylord being way too retard about it.

Replacing Link "I" in his adventure log to "you" (use the link if image texts are too small to see) and worse, omitting a part of Japanese text like in second pic. Some parts don't seem that much of big deal, some parts lose its characterization of Link, his personality.

When you knock or eliminate someone, for Japanese client/settings you have a giant red flare instead of big blood splash/dust on screen.

Localizers also changed certain lines to give some weird dubious flavor instead, like the scene in chapter 2 where the main cast finally found an oasis in the middle of the desert:
kimochii.pngkimochii2.png
気持ちいい (kimochii) can be literally translated into "that feels great".
They also already cut ties with the Flame Clocks of their respective colonies long ago at this point of the story.

The localization has a problem with the system of japanese honorifics (which is rather common among localizations of japanese games anyway) despite it's the main topic of several discussions between characters: Yunie telling Sena to not use the "-chan" thing like she always does with Mio, Rudi from Colony 30 wanting to call Lantz his senpai, or Sena berating her younger fellow in Colony Gamma for not using "-senpai", etc.

chan1-1.jpgchan1-2.pngchan1-3.jpg
chan2-1.jpgchan2-2.pngchan2-3.png

Several character's names were also altered, and this can be distracting if you play with the original japanese voice acting and not the english dub
names1.jpgnames2.jpgnames3.png
Rudi -> Valdi
Yuzuhira -> Juniper
Niina -> Alexiandra
Mashiro -> Fiona
Kamunabi -> Cammuravi

Another thing I've noticed is the way the english localization makes the Nopons talk like mentally-stunted retards, whereas in japanese, they just have a vocal tic to add -も / -mo at the end of each sentence (similar to how the prinnies in Disgaea games always use -ッス /-ssu).

2022080606143900_c.jpg2022080606144500_c.jpg

And finally, there was the whole thing of localizers trying to make Yuzuriha "gender-ambiguous" (in addition to hire a tranny, Lily Hart, as the english voice actor for the character) despite she's clearly female when playing the game in japanese.

Damn, just damn. When are we gonna stop seeing translators making shitty changes to stuff? I hope it'll be soon.
Not going to happen anytime soon. The translators who translate pop culture shit are generally the bottom-tier ones who can't get real translation jobs on higher fields (with a higher pay too).

Localization is also a position of power. It's a weird and obscure power, but it's still something that allows you to change things out of spite and for social politics.

Although the biggest offender was to make Charlotte's dialogues a pain to read in English with this weird speech quirk invented by the localizer.

In Japanese, her youthfulness is simply summarized by the lack of kanji characters (something that young kids barely know) so the text remain readable for a native

I saw some japanese screenshots of the original game where she was definitely slurring her words and babytalking, so I'm not sure whether it's something that they deleted for the JP remake and kept for the Eng version, or these are just particularly coherent screenshots for her from the remake. (Even without slurring, 'doko iku no' is pretty childish so you'd want to carry that across somehow.)

Also, as an aside about learning materials - the Nekopara VN series has a very unusual feature in that you can run two languages simultaneously whilst reading through it.

Apparently it's for Urusei Yatsura and apparently she reverted it back, still a dumb tweet regardless.
That translation makes no sense. It's a rude, informal way of talking about someone. "Those guys, them" but this proof these idiots suck at their job and make shit up. She's insane. But I remember her, she was my first dox.
