Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

If what you say is true, it's hard to say. I think it might be a case of unfortunate timing, but it was bound to happen.

Interesting localization happening in Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy’s new Our Style and Our Substance story event. Localization is done in-house (and here’s an English interview with the localization team). Opinions?

Sorry in advance but these are both livestream archives, couldn’t find anything else but hopefully they’re useable enough for anyone who wants to look more into this.

I personally don’t mind when localization teams have fun with stuff, and this kind of unserious meme-y stuff isn’t unusual for the game, but in this case I think it’s just egregious and takes away from the actual story. It’s like they picked the slang/text-speech based on what would age worst the fastest.

This one is a losing argument and you are inviting pedants to come and remind us all that memes, just like language reflect the space and time of the people who produced the art. Huckleberry Finn has them, and so does Canterbury Tales. It just so happens that in the analytical perspective we find most of this 9gag-tier dross as cringe and "unmemorable".

A friend of mine posted a vid, so I looked into this title and found it was given the puritan outfit censorship just like Stellar Ass did.

At that point I simply walked away from the title.
you mean relink? didn't even notice, and they never advertised it as "uncensored". it's still published on playstation so you get shorts instead of panties: https://steamcommunity.com/app/881020/discussions/0/4208119288693710911/
it has no anticheat or denuvo, you can mod it to your hearts content shitting all over playstation players in the process.

the mobile game is a jpg collector, censoring that would make the whole thing pointless, besides it's not officially published in the west and not on platforms with a stick up their arse.

The artbook for the Limited Edition of Tsukihime remake is being censored on PS4, not on Switch.
The game itself is reported to be the same between the two versions but considering Sony's record, it wouldn't be entirely surprising that a day-1 patch were to happen.

Some localizer in the Installbase forum is defending said changes, citing "avoiding a Vita situation" or "the PS Vita being the Gamergate console".

Digging up more info on the guy, he used to be part of Siliconera long ago and would ban anyone who talked anything remotely positive about the Playstation Vita during its run.

Which essentially means that the power-tripping guy continues to have a derangement syndrome over the handheld console (and Gamergate) for a full decade by now.

You know what's doubly funny about this?

The publisher of Tsukihime is Aniplex.

Aniplex is literally just Sony:

Sony is now censoring Sony.

what's the explanation for this? I never owned a vita but what is even the impetus to refer to it as the gamer gate console?

The Vita is essentially THE portable to have once you hack it. It's region-free, you can stick music/videos/pictures on it and supposidly you can play online games with it on Sony's own servers (that might have changed over time though) depending on the homebrew

The Vita is also like the TurboGraphx16 where it was more popular in Japan than it was in the states, therefore it has a fuckton of japan/anime titles.

I mod all of my systems and have been thinking about getting one for my woman for a while because she mostly plays jrpgs and when it was current, those were basically the only games I ever saw for it. Is it basically just a thing where there's tons of big titty anime girl games so that equates with wrong think or something? I can't keep up with all this shit.

I tend to stay a generation behind so I can easily mod a system and throw the whole library on it then spend 8 years playing whatever single player games I missed. I was sort of under the impression a lot of this censorship and woke shit in video games was being overblown by pissed off grifters but lately I've been more plugged in to what's been happening and I've been in literal shock seeing how far this shit has actually gone.

every remake and remaster is censored to hell and back and modern AAA games are way worse than I ever actually expected. It's a shame really. I think it's more shocking to me because for most people this has been a gradual thing but I basically walked into the last 10 years of games a decade later all at once and it's fucking nuts.

InstallBaseForum is an offshoot of ResetEra so their opinions are always fucking insane.

Vita was, however, the premier ecchi games platform for a good while before somehow that became Nintendo Switch; titty games but no nudity cause its a console. It was therefore also popular with weebs who were more likely to support GG.

That would be my guess.

Like Baraka Obama said, there were a lot of ecchi games and JRPGs for it.

But I disagree with the idea that it was easy to hack. Instead, I think the console being region free meant that a lot of Japan only games were trivial to import. And most imports were easy to figure out or had an "english asia" release, which is basically translation without localiser bullshit, which was good because games like Uppers and Bullet Girls would be basically impossible on a modern Sony console. The Vita was abandoned by Sony fairly quick, but it had a long tail after that with the previously mentioned weeb importer demographic. The latter days of the console were a string of obscure JRPGs and ecchi games.

I tried to find when the console was abandoned vs it's final release, and couldn't find a real date (the one on Wikipedia is questionable), but it claims that the niche game sales to console sale ratio was high. I can believe that.

It's gotten really bad. We can argue the exact date, but I'd say around 2012 should be your cut off date. Iirc that was the last year there were AAA games of value coming out, and that was the year Anita Sarkeesian came on the scene and the wokeshit thing from a few angry journos to being included in games. Yes, there are things that happened before then, but generally speaking it's something yo can overlook.

On the plus side, the PS3 is the last console I bought, and is the last console that mattered (maybe the Switch counts too?). The PS4 had Bloodbourne and fuck all else. The Xbone, series X, and PS5 all have nothing of value either.

It's a bit of a nitpick but the official English translation of Earth Defense Force 6 (which came out in Asia, the rest of the world has to wait a bit more) has changed the name of one main enemy type as "Kruul".

kruul1.png kruul2.png kululu.png

It's a direct phonetical transliteration of クルル but it's not accurate as it should actually be read as "Kululu", an ancient mythical Mesopotamian creature created by the goddess of the primordial sea, Tamiat. The mistake gets obvious when the next dialogue (in pic 2 above) has the HQ reprimanding the Intelligence department from using mythology references, which doesn't stop the other new alien enemies to be named after sea-related monsters too.

Even the new teleportation ships (which can drop their main body on the ground as anchors) go further with this whole maritime theme by looking like weird jellyfishes.

It's more a case of localizers not paying attention than something outright malicious, but still.

I know I'm on Kiwi Farms but that localizer's statement about the Vita is the most autistic thing I've heard this year.
First time I ever hear that label too, but again considering the guy's record, his line of thinking is not entirely surprising.
The Playstation Vita also had its fair share of localization screw-ups between Tales of Hearts R and the usual NISA hijinks.

Yeah this is definitely a case of an oversight in localization and a forgivable mistake. To be fair to the translators, not everyone is an expert on mythical aquatic creatures (I for one learned something new today Kululu) so they can only catch the obvious ones (Kraken etc).

Now if the fishman identified as a fishman in the Japanese version but the localizers forced him into identifying as a mermaid with she/her pronouns, then that's the time to get our pitchforks out.

Edit: クルル is also one of the female characters from Final Fantasy V

This reminds me of the constant devate that happens in the Dragon Ball fanbase about how to read Krillin's name, that or Kuririn
I do think it is Kuririn as I think its supposed to be kuri chestnut

I looked up the mission level where they're introduced in-game and there is a word-play between 人魚 (ningyou - mermaid or mermen) and 魚人 (gyoujin - fishmen or fish-people). Basically, soldiers have trouble how to call them, if they're human (人) first and fish (魚) second or vice-versa. They are latter named by the HQ as Scylla (スキュラ - sukyura) which is a sea monster from the Greek mythology.

fish1.png
Soldier A (in a state of panic, kneeling on the ground): "The Earth is ruled by mermen (ningyou) ! We are barely kept alive by them ! "

fish2.png
Soldier B: "Do they live deep in the seas like mermaids (ningyou)? I definitely don't want to meet them."

fish3.pngfish4.png
(Right after the pic above) Soldier C: " Mermaids (ningyou).... They're not nice like mermaids (ningyou). They're fishmen (gyoujin) ! "

It's a case where you gotta be creative with the way they flip the kanji characters while keeping the same feel of the conversation.
No idea yet how that part got officially translated as I can't see any video of it for now but I hope they retained that idea too.
