Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

The "vagina bones" thing is a reference to a joke tweet about weird censorship that got taken very seriously by some. In one scene a character wears lowcut shorts. The English language version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions removes the shading that indicates the bone structure and curve of her upper pubic area.

Someone jokingly tweeted about her "they removed her vagina bones" or similar, this tweet escaped the target audience, and now you'll still see occasional references to it online.
That's pretty funny lol

it's arguably worse since it's all about the mind - which usually is in an appropriate body so the question isn't that obvious in the "real world". closest would be how to treat a chick with an obvious mental handicap, and I'd argue most people frown upon that.
It's a visual medium, maybe you'd have a point if it was about books or something, but the imagery makes it worse. Like I said though, it's basically splitting hairs regarding degeneracy.

There are some people who believe that China will save video games. Those people are morons, they are arguably worse on the censorship aspect.
I don't wanna start a debate, but did you see Intergalactic? Western gaming is fucked beyond repair, it doesn't even make anything worth censoring in the first place, so they're better for gaming by default.

So the Neptunia Rebirth series isn't coming to switch. It looks like it was gonna be a set of three games.

Does this set exist on PSN? Like can I get all three in one? I've never played these before. They look very meta fourth wall breaking type. They're all parodies of game companies? There's one called Sisters vs Sisters on sale

Don't waste your money.

The Neptunia games are actual literal slop. They're buggy as shit, run like ass despite having horrible graphics, and they aren't even fun to play.

They are borderline shovelware and not worth buying even if you want to support ecchi games.

They are kinda bizarre. The appeal is the cute girls. The actual references to gaming culture and whatnot are very superficial. Meanwhile, the world building itself is very shallow.

You play through one game and you pretty much have played them all.

They come from a company that allegedly has an infamous reputation for shovelware in Japan. They call it "Idea Fuck".
...despite that, Idea Factory has been in business for a long time. Can't say I disagree though.

I've always thought "if you hate modern gaming from both the East and West, why not play old games?" People here debating and shit when your backlog still exists.

I played through the first one and enjoyed the hell out of it early on, but it didn't really evolve, my tactics stayed pretty much the same throughout the game. It's pretty grindy too. It also had a pretty big difficulty spike toward the end, I think I dealt with that by using a busted DLC character, if I recall correctly. It's an extremely flawed game but worth a try.

I couldn't get into the others though, especially because the story between 1 & 2 don't seem to connect. I tried some spinoffs, they were mid at best.

My backlog is full enough for a lifetime or two, but there's certain "staple franchises" I'd prioritize regardless of backlog. When the inevitable new Smash Bros releases I'm gonna be right there, unless it's somehow trash, for example.

Not even these references to I assume PlayStation? I had assumed the series pokes fun at the console market in a meta clever way. Disappointing to hear they're kinda garbage.

Well, this explains why Chris likes it. He always had the taste for nothing but pure slop: McDonalds, Sonic, Pokemon, MLP, and now this.

Idea factory makes or publishes a lot of low budget RPGs, but I wouldn't say they're necessarily bad or shovelware. Usually, they're just perfectly average formulaic games with themes you may or may not like.

I haven't played any of the Neptunia games but I liked Dusk Diver, the Fairy Fencer games, and Mary Skelter 2.

I think back in their early days, their quality was basically shovelware, but they got enough success to upgrade their budget to the high water mark of serviceable to above average.

That said, I'll never play a Neptunia game until they bend the knee and make a PC character.

Playing Romancing Saga 2 remake and the translation is atrocious, I don't speak Japanese but I know enough through osmosis that phrases are constantly changed for no fucking reason even if using the direct translation would have worked just as well.

Seconded, they are okay, sometimes even great. I played way too many Neptunia games for my sanity and they were consistently serviceable, with the first one being a classic shitty game (mainly near end jump in difficulty). The whole console waifus never really gets beyond memes and puns. Waiting for their next Death end re;Quest game.

The whole series is very much based around being an affectionate parody of the console wars - each of the Goddesses is based around a real console. The main character is based around a failed prototype console that never released. Plot and dialogue references console war happenings.
Series quality reviews may vary as the first few games had full remakes. If someone is talking about the quality of those games you need to figure out whether they're talking about the original Playstation releases or the full redeveloped and redesigned ones that were originally released for the Vita.

Maybe I’ve just been driven paranoid by finding out about the botch job we call Valkyria Chronicles, and I’ve never played Neptunia but I’m wondering how much of it’s bad quality is just us getting screwed over by the localizers and how much of it is just on the game.

Idea Factory has also made a shit ton of crappy tie-in anime for their games, one of which (Spectral Force) is the lowest rated anime on Anime News Network.

I assumed the remakes were on ps5 but all I can see are Goddess vs Goddess and VIII and the like....board game one

Playing otome games and have to deal with swearing and cursing when it isn't even in original text. I'm not saying I'm a saint or something. It's ironic that these words would be censored in current days multiplayer games due to profanity filter. And these localizers being progressive type would also demand certain words to be censored because problematic.

Taisho Alice. There are more examples, I'm too lazy to backtrack 6-hours of gameplay finding more examples.
Any "ass" thing.

This one, he uses "mazui", which means terrible or unpleasant. Changing it to "dickish", can't even have romance scene being normal.
Second image, he said "atarimae darou" means "of course" or "obviously". Even with his face and his tone being calm. That doesn't fit how people usually say "No shit, genius" tone.
Yurika Cinderella.png Cind Yurika 2.png

Internet speech. This is somewhere early 1900s time period, no such thing as internet. What's with the hashtag thing?
TeamBread.png

I'm cringing, same reason annoying me as above. In the insult, I can't catch entire phrase, missing the middle word. It's like this, Onna no shiri ...... hetare (pathetic) otoko. English version of this game was released in 2019, take that of what you will.
Cind Yurika Alice.png

Fansub tier. Even for case like Daijoubu, Wakarimasu and All according to keikaku (plan). The only reason I can think of this because heroine protag herself is being cutesy in her tone. Heroine is not voiced.
Cind Yurika 1.png

Bustafellows, much less annoying liberal tier translation. It's pretty good overall in translation, not eye-rolling cringe or horrible. One of the thing main plot this game covers around "undocumented immigrants" for a more political correct translation rather than "illegal immigrants". Even though the JP word they use in this case is "Fuhou", it exactly means illegal. Which makes two dialogues below back to back quite amusing.
Limbo1.png
Limbo2.png
The more noticeable liberal way would be one of the potential romance route. They have a guy, Shu Lynn O'Keefe, speaks in Southern accent using "ain't" and Italian "capiche" just because he loves old Western movie and being a bounty hunter.

The developer who makes them is IdeaFactory, and their nickname among gamers is IdeaFuck, because they have good concepts, but stunningly mediocre gameplay and somehow NEVER manage to get any better.
