Kiara stated that she knew Calli long before the auditions started (and not as a part of her character, she seems pretty cavalier and only plays her character when it suits the situation) and was surprised to meet up with her when she stopped at Cover's offices, presumably to pick up her equipment and get briefed on the debut process. It stands to reason that Keekihime knew (or knew of) Dice before they became hololive idols and came up with this character dynamic during the preparation process for their debuts, much like other pairings such as Korone and Okayu or Pekora and Miko.I kinda feel that if it were an actual intimate relationship they'd be a bit more circumspect about it. There's an obvious character dynamic of immortal phoenix v. grim reaper being played off of, and given that they likely hadn't met until the audition process was complete sometime in the summer then unless they immediately fell for each other I don't see much of a window to reactively bake the relationship into the character designs (which I think would be a bad idea from a business perspective, as a change in the personal relationship would have a major impact on their performances).
The reason I say hololive seems more like a big screwed up family is because the comraderie between all the talent is on full display and they seem to interact much less like coworkers (which is how nijisanji vtubers tend to act) and more like friends and family to one another. Nijisanji has very distinct groups or cliques to them so people might get along within their own group but might not interact with many outside of that. Bear in mind nijisanji had issues in the past regarding a member's graduation over a fucking accent. That shit would not fly in hololive with any of the talent, at all.Na man, I like Hololive way more but this seems completely backwards. Hololive is more of a corporate idol factory and a legit full time job compared to Nijisanji, their vtubers don't have to stream regularly and are overall more relaxed. Niji seems to be quantity over quality, it's evident in their technology. Hololive's character designs/artwork and tracking technology is far higher quality.
Nijisanji has so many people cus for a lot of them being a vtuber seems to be a side gig. Gundo Mirei is a teacher at an all boy's school and has talked about one of her students recognizing her voice, Setsuna is a programmer, Moira is a truck driver, Maimoto Keisuke is a irl farmer, Yashiro Kizuku is a systems engineer, Dola has some sort of IT job and a bunch of them are very erratic and irregular streamers cus they are probably students or have regular jobs. That is why Hachama is so nuts, she is a student in Australia and still streams so much.. probably partially why she went nuts. Yeah I know a lot of Hololive girls still maintain their original channels like Coco, I'm sure Inna is still doing professional artwork for cell phone games, and Mori is prob still making rap music.. but Nijisanjii has an irl cake makers, maid cafe worker and a various IT workers as their vtuber talent.
Hololive has restrictions on their each new gen from streaming outside their gen for the first month iirc, Nijisanji doesn't have this. Hololive pretends their male Holostars group doesn't exist, Nijisanji lets their guys freely stream and colab with the women and have a bunch of both straight and gay ships to bait fans with. That is why Nijisanji is way larger in Japan and has way more female viewers and their male vtubers are much more successful, they're not just going after the guy idol fans who are more.. emotionally unstable but will simp $ hard. It's also probably why Hololive has way more scandals, their audience cares about their girl's purity or whatever and you need to appease them. I remember when Towa got into trouble and had to take a break cus she forgot to mute her mic and *gasp* the simps heard a guy's voice in the background omg!
Many of the hololive girls also do this as a side thing and not full-time. Calli is (presumably) an English tutor and Korone has another job doing...something. Many of the talent have part time jobs doing something else (particularly among holostars it's common since Roberu is notable for being a full-time streamer in that group) and the requirements of hololive talent retainment are that, barring situations such as illness or special projects, you only have to produce 3 hours of content a week.
As for the others you mentioned: Coco has drastically cut down on the amount of content she produces as Kson, and Ina as Nagu/wooperfuri has basically done nothing of note recently because of hololive; even then she worked off commissions so she was never a full-time artist by any of these companies. Karen has stopped all activity as Dice and basically adapted Calliope Mori as her new artist name to produce music under.
The reason for the outside-generation streaming restriction is to let the new talent figure out their niche and establish their own audience as well as develop relationships within their generation, and it has worked spectacularly. Even when they collaborate outside their own generation, since they started enforcing this shit with gen3 onward you can tell each group of performers has a very close relationship with one another. Even outside their generation you get performers who end up being close due to previous friendships (Pekora/Miko) or shared bullshit (Haachama/Coco.) Basically they want the performers to find themselves and see on their own who they could work with easily.
The holostars situation is...weird. The original restriction and lack of promotion was from when hololive was going hard into the idol thing, and they didn't even give the holostars a proper branch manager. They kind of just set them out into the world and let them do whatever, but now they actually give a shit about them. As evidenced by multiple talents and by talents across other companies, Cover really doesn't care what the Stars do and will happily promote their stuff now. As far as the idol purity thing goes, before that restriction was in place but has since been lifted, and only a few girls work with the Stars mostly because they're the only ones who can make time for it. A lot of the girls' schedules are very strict so making time for the Stars seems almost like an afterthought and only a few talent from the main branch do it, although others will watch them. Fubuki and Matsuri have both been on Roberu's stream and Choco has been spotted in his audience a few times, so such restrictions no longer exist. I think even Astel has responded to Watson and expressed interest in working with her over something, but that might not happen simply because of Astel's poor grasp of English and Watson's poor grasp of Japanese. Kiara has also expressed interest in having the Stars as part of her talk show but only after going through all the girls, and her stated reason boils down to just liking girls more than guys.
What rock are you living under that makes you believe hololive has more scandals? Nijisanji was once referred to by Mito (you know...their flagship talent) as having conditions more akin to working for a black company to the point where their office workers would be sleeping on the floor. Nijisanji has a lot more shit go down but not a lot of it reaches western shores. Hololive's stuff is typical idol nonsense while Nijisanji involves questionable working conditions and a lot more organizational fuckups. Towa's scandal of having her guy friend be heard over her discord is nothing compared to some of the shit Ichikara has gone through.
