ghost in the shell live action?

So if this was green light becasue some Suit was thinking they were going to make some money, they're an complete idiot who's going to lose their investment, becasue I doubt the general public is going to give a rats ass enough to watch it, GITS fans never asked for an Americanized version and won't see it besides maybe out of morbid curiosity, and apparently nobody learned form what happened the last time with that terrible DBZ movie.
Oh, I don't think they'll have any trouble making their investment back. An action movie starring Scarlett Johansonn is going to make a boatload of cash regardless of the source material. If she could carry something with as profoundly stupid a premise as "Lucy", there isn't much question of this being successful at the box office.

Augh no. It's Dragonball Evolution all over again.

Of course they choose a white woman to play her. 'MURICA.

Well, no one has mentioned the elephant in the room, so I will... could Hollywood not find ONE Japanese woman to play a character named Motoko Kusinagi? I mean Scarlett is great and all and the casting could have been a helluva lot worse but, really? Not one?

*le sigh* If we're going this route, I hope they get Ron Perlman to be Batou, or maybe Timothy Olyphant as Togusa....

They should get the voice actress from either the first film or the one from SAC to dub over ScarJo's lines because her acting is fucking garbage and it's painful to hear her talk.

All You Need is Kill was a novel, not an anime. I think there was a manga after the fact, but not really the same thing.

Yeah, I know. I probably should've specified that it was a light novel

My hopes aren't exactly high. I'm not certain as to why a live-action adaption is even necessary. The original film and manga are both fine as they are. Why go to see a watered-down retread when you can just go observe the source material instead?

The notion that there needs to be an Americanized live-action version of everything really bothers me. What is it with American cinema and the need to remake foreign stuff? Almost all of the notable American remakes of foreign films I've seen have been terrible or at best inferior to their source material.

I'm going to go off topic for a moment. To be fair, other countries frequently adapt American stuff too:

Also see the cinema snob reviews.

I don't think adaptations in of themselves are bad, as long as you strive to preserve the spirit of the original material. The Ghost in the Shell adaptation does not have to be bad, but the problem is Hollywood does not have a good track record of preserving that spirit. When they go "deep" they stay on the safe side rarely bringing up anything that makes you question your belief. With how deep Ghost in the Shell is, a simple movie adaptation would not do the show justice.

I think the best hope for a good American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell would have been if HBO got the OK to do a TV adaptation. It would still not be the same, but I trust HBO has the competency to at least preserve the spirit of the source material.

When is that Cowboy Bebop movie starring Keanu Reeves coming out again? I'd be all over that.

It comes out between the release dates of Half Life 3 and Sonichu: The Movie starring Michael Cera as Christian Weston Chandler

It's going to be awful, much like how Scarlett Johansson's acting generally is throughout the films she stars in. So they'll just do what they normally do and try concealing it amidst a few boob and butt shots.

It's a pity, but I can't think for the life of me of another young sci-fi actress who could do the role amicably. I would have picked Sigourney Weaver some 30 years ago - she doesn't look anything like Motoko, but she could probably do a good job of emulating the character.

I'll bring in a second elephant, I honestly think Hollywood is trying their best in preventing Asian actors getting any major roles. Anybody remember how Bruce Lee was screwed out of his own TV show because he was "too Oriental"?

So the word is that GITS is bombing hard. Most sites seem to be bashing GITS for "whitewashing" androids in the future, it's like they didn't expect Hollywood to have a load of high profile European and Jewish actors with name brand recognition to pull from.

But from what I actually heard on the ground, people who went to see it said that the script was dumbed down and had stupid things shoehorned in to try and make it relevant to todays society and make it more accessible.

It did okay IMO. But that's the problem: it did okay, when Paramount was expecting this movie to be GROUNDBREAKIG, GAMECHANGING, and of course... PROGESSIVE!

$60 million lost.

While the studio blamed the Interwebs on the whole "whitewashing" incident (when irl, many Asians were actually okay with the casting; MILO made a video about it) for the movie's failure, it was really clear that post-production and Johansson's schedule led to the devastating result.
That, and fans were the only ones that went to see it.. and those that needed something to do over the weekend

So.... still hope in AKIRA (if it'll ever be released)?

If you bring up that the Japanese were fine with the casting, the response you get will be something along the lines of "Good for them. This isn't about them. It's about representation for Asian-AMERICANS"

Also, they're trumpeting that this movie's box office numbers will result in whitewashing being done away with in Hollywood. Then again, these are the same people who still claim that Fembusters was a box office hit despite massive evidence to the contrary.

I did not see it so I am curious to know what went wrong with the post production. Bad CGI or bad editing?
