It did okay IMO. But that's the problem: it did okay, when Paramount was expecting this movie to be GROUNDBREAKIG, GAMECHANGING, and of course... PROGESSIVE!
$60 million lost.
While the studio blamed the Interwebs on the whole "whitewashing" incident (when irl, many Asians were actually okay with the casting; MILO made a video about it) for the movie's failure, it was really clear that post-production and Johansson's schedule led to the devastating result.
That, and fans were the only ones that went to see it.. and those that needed something to do over the weekend
So.... still hope in AKIRA (if it'll ever be released)?
