Basically it feels like either Liam himself or Glitch decided "We want the show to be serious and plot driven!" without realizing Liam has no fucking idea how to actually accomplish that task, so you get this. I actually wouldn't even be surprised if it could be a case of Glitch making the suggestion and Liam not wanting to say "No." I mean who would say no to having a company actually fund your bullshit?
This sure would explain so much, considering how nowadays, any zoomer media (specially for teenagers) needs to be lore-filled piles of text, which can generate discussions and internet theories about said media.
There simply can't just be a funny show about vampire robots and violence, we need that eldritch horror maaaaan, we need to make things as complex as possible for the fanbase dude, we gotta generate attention, generate interaction. generate drama...
he actually does make a point though, the tonal inconsistency is completely intentional and "part of his style" though, that's why I kinda find it funny in its own way, but I have no idea how he's actually, unironically still cares about these characters when they have the depth and likability of your average guy in an internet parody animation
This discussion made me doubt if tonal shifts are actually a bad thing or does Murder Drones just does it bad, to the point that I actually watched one of Liam's other show (Internecion Cube), and after watching all its 25 minutes, I... I get it now.
Well, I get his style, don't think MD got any better because of it, but I get what Viam is used to, and tbh, I think Internecion Cube is quite neat, not amazing, but neat.
And that explains why I don't like the tone shift in MD but I like in Cube, it's actually two things:
1- Cube's tonal shift is more subtle. While the dialogue tends to be wacky and satirical, it never really de-escalates on what's happening on screen, it's dry humor done right.
2-Cube's plotline is pretty simple, there's no lore exposition every frame of the thing, so you can just enjoy Max and Ic-0n talking about sunny-side up eggs and wait for the cool momen
t™ to happen. I wouldn't mind MD's lore exposure if there were way more cool moments™, but this ain't no DBZ. they don't spend entire episodes on fight scenes, this is just 2 minutes of a fighting or horror scene, and 20 minutes of exposure that you can't enjoy because it's just too cramped in and you don't understand anything. Hence why we agree that it should be a more character-driven show (which Internecion kinda is), it's just more simple and easier to enjoy than whatever is going with Drones.
Anyway, probably sperged too much. Since Episode 8 is probably the finale, I can't tell in which route is better, if they gonna try to explain all the lore-related stuff or if they just ignore it and make it 20-30 minutes of Uzi throwing hands with Eldritch Horror Trojan Virus. Either way, I hope they make it good.
