Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Long Live the King

The first Legendary Godzilla didn't review well either and people still saw the hell out of it. All that matter is: you personally enjoy it and if it made enough money to ensure we eventually get MechaGodzilla or Destroyah.
All the same, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie as well. Hoping it stops by my tiny town in bumfuck nowhere.
I know I'm having to drive an extra half-hour to see it because our tiny movie theater is opting to run Aladdin and keep Detective Pikachu going. Yet another reason to hate Disney.

I'm not even kidding, one critic was complaining because Goji isn't a "symbol for American fascism" in this movie. So yeah. It's all bullshit. I mean, I already knew this but whatever.
While it is true there are some Godzilla movies (and other giant monster movies) that would have a message, even if is political or social issue, the good ones would be low-key and not lecture the audience.

Godzilla vs. Kong is to be released next year so maybe that one may reference Mechagodzilla or include him.

Though I couldn't give less of a shit about King Kong, I am curious about who they're going to have to team up and defeat at the end. I've seen people say there are rumors it's going to be Destroyah, which seems weird to me. I think they'll end up fighting another original titan, I didn't mind MUTO so I'm okay with that.

If they ever get around to doing the Godzilla vs. Pacific Rim crossover that was talked about ages ago, I think that would be pretty perfect for MechaGodzilla, since they could sell him as an AI-controlled Jaeger that goes rogue or whatever.

I dunno, Pacific Rim 2 kinda sucked dick so I'm not sure on that whole deal anymore.

Godzilla's gonna be the villain isn't he? Maybe not full on, but he will be the one we're meant to be rooting Kong to fight and defeat. And while this will be controversial, If Legendary aren't doing any more Zilla flicks, Maybe.....Kill Godzilla off? And do Kong movies, Under the title "KING Kong" Kong beats and kills Godzilla and takes the crown as "King of the monsters"

According to the trailers, Godzilla's being set up as the "hero" in this film like he was in the first one. But Godzilla's always straddled the anti-villain/anti-hero line at most, he hasn't gone full hero since the kid-friendly Showa movies.

But if they kill Godzilla off à la vs. Destroyah, they'll still have to follow the status quo and show a new one will rise, because nature always provides. Though the Kong vs Godzilla film should be interesting in how they handle it. They might make it as ambiguous as the original '62 film and reignite that old flame.

It'd be interesting if Destroyah shows up, Godzilla goes down in a way similar to how he did in the original Heisei series, and Kong takes his place as "king". That's the most predictable way I'd see it, not that I mind.

Won't be able to see this until Tuesday night since the whole family wants to see it, so gonna have to endure the weekend and stave it off with other Godzilla films 'til then. Have fun crushing the competition, Legendary.

I got a rule, if a movie trailer has a character say "human beings are a disease-" speech, I don't watch it. Hate that pretentious faux moral crap. The way I see it, if they're gonna go for that lazy hack trope they're gonna rely on as many others as they can :/

I watched the film on IMAX so here's my verdict.
Pros:
- The monsters had some of the best examples of CGI to date
- The lore of them being mythical creatures of old is a nice addition
- The human characters were at least competent and at least did their jobs driving the plot forward
- Watanabe's moment with Godzilla was internally tearjerking for a stoic guy like me
- Dougherty gladly faithfully follows the monster's characterizations with some unique quirks to them
- The soundtrack was really great and fans would definitely love the many nods to the classic themes
-Easter eggs are not only fun to find as a fan, but they sometimes add to the lore

Cons:
- More often than not, they cut away the action, especially around with Rodan and Ghidorah and the Boston battle
- Please keep the jokes to a minimum, you're not that funny. In fact, I'd rather have more exposition than a slew of one liners that don't work
- It was a little too fast paced as the plot shifts from point A to point B in a few minutes at times
- The villains are dumbasses and their motivations fall flat, even for a Godzilla movie
- Not enough moments with Mothra, Rodan, and the other titans
- The tone is somewhat unbalanced and it goes all over the place. From serious and gritty to attempting to have the light-hearted quips that remind me of MCU's attempt at humor. It should stick with the tone the Heisei era was going for. Knowlingly cheesy, but smartly acknowledges it
- Is it just the theater or was the music a bit muffled at times?
That's my two cents. It at leasts warrants a rewatchability. It gave me chills and stomach knotting for one thing.

To be fair, the characters in the movie think that idea is nuts.

Saw it. It was pretty fun. Got much more monster action in than the first Legendary Godzilla film (which I didn't really like), so that's a huge plus.

An incomplete recap:

1) Godzilla and Mothra are good, Rodan is neutral, King Ghidorah is bad.
2) Vera Farmiga's character joins forces with an eco terrorist. The other characters won't take her shit when she justifies her actions. One character outright calls her a bitch
3) Vera Farmiga's plan is to awaken the Titans/Kaiju one by one but King Ghidorah awakens all of them, causing mass destruction around the globe
4) There's this device that Vera Farmiga and her ex husband made that sends frequencies to the Kaiju, which are used to control them to a degree. It's a central theme in the movie along with rescuing Eleven from Stranger Things
5) The oxygen destroyer is deployed to try and kill King Ghidorah and Godzilla. Doesn't do shit except make Godzilla flee to heal himself
6) The humans we mainly follow find where Godzilla hides when he's not swimming around and discover ancient ruins that confirm suspicions that the Kaiju were seen as gods in early history with Godzilla king and Mothra queen. Ken Watanabe's character sacrifices himself to "juice" Godzilla up with a nuclear weapon so he can heal faster and take on Ghidorah in the finale.
7) Final scene is in Boston. Mothra dies after injuring Rodan and confronting Ghidorah, while Godzilla is overradiated from the "juicing" and kills Ghidorah with it. Rodan and a couple other Kaiju bow before Godzilla afterward to accept him as their king
8) King Kong isn't in it but there are constant mentions and references of Skull Island and the Titan there, including that other Kaiju are coming together in Skull Island during the end credits and a cave painting depicting Kong and Godzilla fighting
9) There is a bonus scene at the end with the eco terrorist
10) Not really a spoiler but when King Ghidorah is freed in Antarctica a soldier says "you've gotta be fucking kidding" upon seeing him, which makes me wonder if that's a subtle Thing reference. Most likely is
11) There's a dedication to Harou Nakajima (the original guy in the Godzilla suit) at the end

I saw Chris Stuckman's review a couple days ago and he was completely wrong about the humans but completely right on what I saw the movie for. The humans did their jobs and I felt a little for them, one of the characters played Tywin Lannister in GOT (my friend confused him for the guy who played Roose Bolton), I liked the lady with the black hair in the very beginning and was sad that Ghidorah killed her, monster fights were great, Ghidorah was pretty bitchin, he had a great design, I loved that the monsters were credited as themselves as the credits scrolled by, loved Mothra and wanted more of her, was sad about Watanabe's character dying but loved his moment with Godzilla and was wondering who was going to be pissed by that part in the movie: Japan or China?

But yes, this movie is totally for Godzilla fans and the critics are stupid thinking this shouldn't focus on the monsters because they are the stars of this, not the humans.

Did anyone else see this, and think that the ending was absolute trash?
Left: Gets hentaied by nano-machines
Back: Funky space-elf suicide cultist
Right: Space gaytheist which goes Leroy Jenkins, and fucks everything up
Front: Knocks up bug chick, and then kills himself for no apparent reason

Ken Watanabe's death was definitely one of the most touching parts of the movie. Goodbye old friend :heart-empty:

As my brother said when we left the theater, it's fuckin' Godzilla. You don't watch Godzilla for the humans, you watch them for the monsters!
