Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Long Live the King

DURR HURR THERE’S NO POLITICAL ALLEGORY IN THE BIG GIANT MONSTER MOVIE

WHY OH WHY ISN'T GODZILLA A METAPHOR FOR THE PROBLEMS WITH PEOPLE SEEING TOTALITARIANS AS SAVIORS WAH THERE'S TOO MANY BIG MONSTERS AND THEY'RE "LOUD" WAH WAH WAH

Even if it's "just" a monster mash, characterizing a Godzilla movie that isn't all about "the human drama" with a few minutes of Godzilla action spliced in as just being about "big dumb monsters" is sort of pretentious and annoying.

It's ok, they found their political allegory. I was rolling my eyes just imagining all the climate change hot takes that entertainment journalism would churn out while listening to Emma's whole justification for unleashing Gidorah.
I dunno, the movie was ok. Wish I had been able to see half of the monster fights and they didn't have literally everything shrouded in rain or smoke or other miscellaneous particle effects. The human characters were only marginally more interesting than the last ones, and Charles Dance really needs to star in something he actually wants to be in, instead of delivering the same retread of Tywin Lannister (but more visibly bored this time) he's been doing lately.

Just got back from seeing the new Godzilla movie. Gonna go ahead and put my thoughts down in spoilers because I don't wanna ruin it for anybody:

Okay, so the pros for me were as follows:

* King Ghidora was probably my favourite thing about the monsters. He had the most screen time and his fight scenes were really fun.
* The music was great - really good renditions of the monster themes.
* Mothra owning Rodan was awesome.
* Speaking of which both Mothra and Rodan were good too.
* I liked the nod to the twins from the original Mothra film.
* Serizawa's death was rather touching (even if Godzilla looked like he really didn't give a damn).

And as for the cons:

* The human plot was bland and stupid.
* Some of the fight scenes felt a bit cluttered by rain or snow or other falling debris.
* Not enough of Mothra - they hyped her up in the trailer but she didn't get as nearly enough screen time as I feel the Queen of the Cosmos deserves.
* The acting wasn't that good.

So all in all I feel that it was a decent film if you ignore the human shenanigans and just focus on the monster fights. I still think Japan does it a lot better, though.

Almost forgot to mention it in my previous post but--

Holy shit movie don't bait the shippers. Why are you crossing that line and baiting the shippers? Have you seen the shippers in the kaijuu fandom? It's the most fucking insane thing, like I can't believe people ship Godzilla/Mothra, like good God people, what is wrong with you? Why would the movie throw a bone to these people and imply they may be an "item", what the fuck? Good thing Watanabe (think it was him) corrects the dude and say "T_T Symbiotic relationships aren't uncommon in nature don't be silly T_T".

I should've seen the warning signs when the guy puts on a documentary on kaijuu reproduction for the Senate and hopes it's the footage with the censoring, although I thought it was funny, but I should've known it was going to lead up to some fucking awkward dialogue.

I'm totally cool with how Mothra was handled in this movie and everything...

But yeah, baiting the shippers is ALWAYS a bad idea.

The artwork and fan fiction surrounding Godzilla and Mothra is going to be dark and weird as hell.

It... turns out the director is a Mothzilla shipper, so the references were definitely done on purpose.

He's been reblogging shipping fan-art as well.

Some of it's pretty cute, admittedly (can't find it for some reason, but someone drew hybrid babies and I'm ashamed to say that got me choked up), but it's just... so fucking weird.

'Kay, this is actually a pretty neat idea.

Yeah it always starts off cute and innocent, but then you get the weirdos that take it too far.

Godzilla and Mothra as the King and Queen? Awesome.

Fan art wedding photos? Cute.

But then sooner or later it goes to darker places and becomes Tumblr nut bags sperging about how Godzilla and Mothra were "meant to be" and how they are an "idealized non-binary couple" and all the sex fan art shows up.

So literally Mothra pulling an Assassin's Creed.

It's already happening.

I'm sure they're out there, but Tumblr doesn't have them. Jokey picture I spoilered a few posts up might actually count, though.

But yeah, Mothzilla's like an old ship apparently, but it was always rather on the down-low. The poor optimistic bastards are saying on Tubmlr how happy they are for the influx of new fans joining their ship, but do they not realize they're on Tumblr?

EDIT: Lol "Tubmlr", I'm keeping it.

Just watched Godzilla: KotM. Would had watched it earlier, but Google screwed up with showing the movie dates.

Being my first Godzilla movie to watch in theaters, it was worth it.
Mostly on the human side, it was "Some people just want the world to burn". The Watanabe guy was great.
Kaiju side: Straight up fun.
Overal: Godzilla and Mothra are the best characters in the movie.

Bring back MechaGodzilla
I wouldn't be surpised if thoese crazy ecoterrorists make one or with MechaGhidorah.

Saw it on opening night, theater's power went out right as Mothra was about to emerge from her cocoon, so they had to reset the projector.
A similar thing happed to me at my theater. Luckly it was near Godzilla's home

I also thought about that possibility.

Mecha King Ghidorah is a thing in the Japanese movies ... One of my favorite Godzilla movies, too.

I adore how this movie laid down the groundwork for several sequel possibilities. Let's just all hope that these sequels are made. Apparently the movie is doing well in the foreign box office.

Will wait to see it like I did the 2014 one.

....or maybe just watch Shin Godzilla again. Would prefer a sequel to that.

The home release will be on August 27th and included in the special features may be six to eight deleted scenes. The director has stated his cut of the movie was around 30 minutes longer than what came out in theaters. Hopefully some of those scenes will include more monster fights or even monsters destroying parts of the world after King Ghidorah awakens them.

So apparently there is additional detail in this movie that I didn't catch when I saw it in theaters.

Supposedly, when Ghidorah charges up by absorbing the power from the electrical lines in the final battle, you can see wounds on him healing, keeping in line with his ability to heal himself.

Guess I'll have to look out for it when I see the movie again.

I remember that, but it was showcased really gruesomely when he regrew his head, so can't really fault anyone for missing those little tidbits after seeing that.
