GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

The RTX 3080 arrived yesterday, and it is plumbed in. Once I had downloaded EVGA's bullshit software to turn off the RGB blinkenlights (they were set by default to Rainbow Wave which is ugly and distracting) I mused how the shuddering fuck I was going to get the side panel on my case. It was bigger than I expected (it was sold to me as a 2.5 slot card but it's clearly a 3 slot card with a 2 slot bracket) and even with the longest spacer I had the side panels wouldn't go on. So I had to daisy chain them. I could fit it in the GPU bay no problem but then there wasn't room to plug in the cables. So I took it out, plugged in the cables, and basically massaged them until they would make a nice 90 degree angle, then had to squeeze the whole affair in and get it into the slot.

And then just to add to the fun, the bracket screw holes don't line up with the screw holes on the case. It is held in by a PCIe riser cable and the bracket physically digging into the case. Also, there wasn't enough space to manage the PCIe power cables and they are herniating out the side of the case.

So, I fired up CP77 and decided to see if ray tracing really is just a meme. I am afraid to report that it still is; the reflections and refractions and things are pretty but doesn't add a huge amount of detail all things considered. However, DLSS, which is only on RTX class cards, is not a meme but is actually useful. By use of AI-powered black magic it basically renders in dynamic lower resolutions but then upscales and uses said AI to fill in the loss of detail. With it turned off, I went from 25fps cranked at 4K with ray tracing on to 57fps cranked at 4K with ray tracing on. On Balanced mode there was no real noticeable loss of visual fidelity compared to off (though there was some on Performance or High Performance).

I then attempted Shadow of the Tomb Raider (the only other game I have that has ray tracing) but it wouldn't let me turn on either DLSS or ray tracing. The options were greyed out even though it had recognised my card.

I also realised just how barren this year is going to be for game releases. The only ones I'm looking forward to actively are Grounded, which I have in Early Access and which is great fun though the early access campaign is lacking somewhat in content, and Humankind, which is sort of a Civilisation type game but with a focus on culture rather than conquest.

Yeah...that's the funny thing. As fun as it is to upgrade a gpu, I really just don't see any games worth it.

It gets to the point where I honestly think some ppl hype up new AAA releases just to have SOMETHING to justify $1000+ gpu upgrades.
They have some amount of guaranteed customers* from high-end GPU owners by touting the advanced graphics and ultra textures.

*pirates, they can't afford the games after buying the card. There's a lot of reasons and excuses for pirating things but the only on that really bothers me is "I can't afford it after buying this $3,000 PC".

Ah, the people who need to firesale a few months down the road to pay rent because they used literally every last cent of savings on a pc?

Some 3060 tis are $1k on ebay. Unless those can also clean your house, make your breakfast, teach you the meaning of life, and train your dog, they aren't worth more than $400.
Honestly? I'd hardly consider it worth it even at $400. You're not getting any more perf/$ than pascal prices which is disappointing.

All of those day 1 FE reviews sold the "great value!" line, even though that's only when compared to disgusting rtx 2000 pricing.

I was shocked when I saw the kind of single-thread performance that Ryzen 9 5900Xes are capable of, at a relatively cheap price point. It had to be too good to be true. And it was. They've all been bought up by scalpers. Ditto on the RTX 3080s.

The raw power is stunning:

I think I know what my next rig is gonna have.

I was lucky to get a 5600X for MSRP. I've been sorely tempted to try and sell my 5600X to try and nag a 5900X but it really wouldn't be worth it for me. The 5900X's are actually harder to find than 3080s and 3090s. And I'm really tired of doing fucking treasure hunting for a goddamn retail product like its some sort of limited edition shit. I do gaming, Photoshopping and planning on light streaming (Probably awhile in the future since I'm super lazy). I'm not doing blender or major video or audio editing. Its just that "GOTTA BE THE BESTEST" syndrome. I figure my GPU will pick up some of the slack.

The scalper shit is just plain infuriating though. The problem is that the waits are getting longer and longer and are expected to go into early Q2.

Welp, I just did it. I pulled the trigger on a set of parts for a new build. Still undecided on the case. Should I use my old Vengeance C70 or just spring for something new? So many of these new cases look like crap. Everyone’s bought into this tempered glass/RGB fan fad to the point where their rigs look like some gay disco ball. I want to do a simple, compact mid-tower with nice clean lines, and the C70, my all-time favorite mid-tower case, is long discontinued. There are ratty, fucked-out ones on eBay with the bezels all scratched up right now going for $300 buy it now. For what used to be a $139 case. Insane. I could use my old one, but I’d have to strip it down. Easy enough.

For the CPU and GPU, I had to ride on the back of a three-legged mule to a small village in Tajikistan, braving dehydration out in the scorching hot desert. There, I was arranged to meet with Abu al-Walid ibn Salam, the most fearsome man in the Middle East and half of Asia. They call him the Silicon Sheik. I licked my dry, cracked lips and proceeded into a spacious tent surrounded by grim-faced men wielding AK-47s. The interior smelled faintly of Cosmoline, old canvas, and hashish. There, the dealer stroked his beard as he ran his ring-encrusted hand sensuously over a colorful assortment of orange and yellow Pelican cas—

I went on eBay. For a 5900X and an RTX 3090 FE. What should be a $4400 build is now pushing $5400. Bastards. :(

Anyway, this is the sort of setup I’m going for:

Case: Corsair Vengeance C70 (gonna strip the guts out of my old one, since they’re sadly discontinued)
Mobo: Asus ROG Strix X570-E
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S
Fans: A few of the 2000 RPM Noctua iPPCs (going for mostly quiet all-PWM control on air and no OC with this build)
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3090 Founder’s Edition (does it fit between the ass-end of the case and the drive cage? According to Corsair, there should be a few millimeters of clearance)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 128 GB (4x 32GB) DDR4-3200
Storage: Samsung 970 Pro m.2 1TB boot drive, Samsung 860 Pro 2TB storage drives
Optical Drive: I dunno, whatever Pioneer BD writer I have lying around
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G5 1000W

Ew, supernova g5. Should have grabbed a 2nd gen made by superflower instead.

Wait, did they switch manufacturers? I always bought EVGA because they were Taiwan-made and didn’t have disgusting coil whine. I like my PSUs nice and quiet. What the fuck? Where are they made now?!

Fuuuuuuuuck! :stress:

Thanks, buddy. You saved me some big-time disappointment.

That's a pretty fucking awesome work station. I am not compiling audio or video so I couldn't really justify the extra price when I found a 5600X. I'd probably also need a more expensive power supply for the 5900X and my build was expensive as is. I also have no clue why sites are still benchmarking at 1080p with some of this hardware.

But personally I typically avoid ebay and use amazon resellers. This is because there's a bit of extra protection there and some of them are basically stores in unto themselves.

I guess if you want to go SUPER HYPE you can get the EVGA Kingpin if you can find one or the ASUS Rog Strix. I went MSI Suprim but just remember these cards are fucking HUGE.

Np, I always try to shill for superflower when I can.

Too many ppl neglect psu choice without realizing a funky psu will cripple a system. I'd say it's the most important choice.

Given the 3090 Founders is already a triple slot, how can the Suprim or Kingpin be bigger? In fact, I think the Suprim might actually be smaller since it only has a two slot bracket. Also, conventional triple fan cooler and plastic shell rather than the Founders' fore and aft cooler and metal construction.

Then again, my 3080 FTW Ultra, despite being marketed as "2.7 slot" is pretty much a triple slot. I measured how much it overhangs the bracket by, and it does so by 20mm. They should have given it a triple bracket and had done with it, frankly.

As regards power supplies, I'm resolutely a Silverstone man. I've never tried their passive Nightjar models where the whole casing is a heatsink but their Strider and SFX models are pretty damn quiet - the latter especially when you realise they can be platinum or titanium rated and still smaller than the competition. Well built bricks too.

Yeah, I'd lean towards SS for that sort of application.

I honestly never hear my g2, but I have rad fans running anyways

The 3090 FE is quite a a bit shorter than the Suprim. The FE measures 313mm while the suprim is 336mm . The Kingpin is even shorter at 289mm, but it's hybrid cooled with a 360mm Rad.

Are there online stores where you can order JUST the GPU chip that doesn't require a large industrial bulk order? Closest I've come are sites that sell BGA GPUs for laptops.
