Is it possible to buy something I can plug in that acts as an external processor and boosts my processing power so I don't have to bother with replacing my processor or buying a new pc.
No, unless that "something you can plug in" is another computer that you remote into. I think there are new Pentiums, but no one uses them. Your system is probably way too old to be useful.

Quick question.

Lets say I have an old pc and my processor is outdated 2.7ghz dual core pentium.

its been 20 years james, you need to upgrade your pc. we've evolved past the pentium dual core of crysis

Alos the xbox 360 has a 3 core 3.2 GHz processor. Is there any reason why you cant simply repurpose it to use in a computer?
Xbox 360 is PowerPC architecture with low RAM (512 MB), so even if you could jailbreak it to act as PC, it's not going to be useful.

You can buy entire PCs under $100 (used/clearance) that should smoke your old Pentium. Name the specific CPU for us, BTW.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 3D V-Cache CPU Specs Leak, Huge Base Clock Speed Uplift To 4.7 GHz & 120W TDP

According to this leak, the 9800X3D repeats the 120 W TDP of the 7800X3D and ties the 7600X and 7900X for the highest base clock of any Ryzen (4.7 GHz). That's +500 MHz (+12%) vs. the 7800X3D, with the turbo clock also being raised 200 MHz (+4%).

Compared to the 9700X, it's +900 MHz base, -300 MHz turbo. You could conclude that while it's being allowed to use more power, there is still a voltage restriction that the non-cache models don't have. But we'll have to wait and see how AMD handles overclocking for this one.

EDIT: If they have given the all-core turbo instead of single-core, then it could be faster than 5.2 GHz.

My cpu intel pentium is a 2.7 ghz dual core pentium from like 10 years ago.

I have a gtx 960 and a few other things that were added in, but its an old computer.

Still does the job and runs older games pretty well, cant run most newer titles and my cpu is a big bottle neck for alot of things and I was wondering if there may be some sort of budget way to boost my computers performance.

On the contrary, I've been mostly using it for programming and while it is a little slow on start up, my computer does most of the things I need it to do perfectly fine. I just cant player newer video games.

If displaying text and playing the occasional round of Civ 2 is your use case, you can probably skip the upgrade.

Games are at minimum expecting you to bring 4 cores nowadays and most would prefer 6 or even 8.

Even if there were some hypothetical drop-in upgrade, you'd be better off just spending that money to get a low-end modern CPU + RAM + mobo. What kind of budget do you have for this sort of thing?

This isn't an Apple Store. Please name the CPU so we know the socket. Is it a Pentium G3240T?

Replacing it with a quad-core on the same socket could help significantly with certain games and applications. But if they are too expensive on ebay, it's probably not worth it.

Intel uses the Pentium line for basic bitch CPUs. For most generations the power goes i9>i7>i5>i3>Pentium. If your computer is relatively new, and has a socketed pentium cpu, you can get a major performance improvement from going from a one core pentium to an eight core i7

Go to Search, type "About," click "About your PC," and tell us what it says under "Processor." That will at least give us a clue as to whether or not you can put a faster CPU in your machine..

AMD has officially cut prices of the 9000-series CPUs by $30-50, and announced a November 7th (presumed launch, maybe announcement) date for the 9800X3D:

I mean there are technically ways to do this, but they require that your entire software stack be tailored to them. Just get a more powerful CPU and/or motherboard if needed.

I found that you can find budget refurnished desktops on amazon. I was thinking about getting that and then popping in my hard drive and gpu. Problem solved.

Just make sure you know what you buy before you buy it. A lot of the Dell/HP/Lenovo desktops have proprietary power supply connectors, so you wont be able to use your GPU with them.

For CPUs, this utility will allow you to compare the benchmark between any CPUs: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleCompare.php

EBay will likely have better bang for the buck. Manufacturers like Dell and HP have OK refurb deals from time to time as well. Feel free to ask here or in the No Stupid Questions thread if you want a second opinion before you spend your money.
