Is it more about ensuring the cpu has enough cores or is it the resizable bar thing?

It's possible a little of both. I've seen six cores and eight cores paired with a 4060 on 1080p and there's maybe a 2-4 frame difference between Pci-e 3 and 4. I don't know how much recording has an effect on it. Maybe going to 1440p, you'd see a bigger jump in difference, but 1080 seems to be pretty okay from the testing I've seen. Like I said, I tend to play a lot of older titles, and nothing really new interests me anymore, since a lot of devs are just intent to tank their studios down with DEI, I've just ignored a lot of modern gaming.

It would make no difference at all. Here is, in a simplified way, how modern code works.

CPU: GPU, the camera has shifted by 2 degrees, and there are several models whose animations need to be advanced. Update this list of 3D models accordingly, apply these texture layers, and these full-screen effects.

GPU: Okay! The GPU then proceeds to loop through every triangle, process them, and then loop through all the pixels as many times as needed to determine their final color.

To the CPU, it doesn't matter whether the GPU has 100,000 pixels or 100,000,000 pixels to process. The CPU doesn't assign instructions per pixel. It issues instructions that are applied to entire batches of pixels. It's kind of like if the President orders the Army to evacuate a base. The size of the base has no bearing on how long it takes the President to draft the order, only on how long and how difficult it is for the Army command to organize the execution of the order.

Is it really that hard to not fuck up a 12VHPWR connector? Wouldn't a 2x8 connector also blow up if they shunted all the power onto one wire?

8 pins are overspecced he had a video talking about it. the 12vhpwr connectors are bare minimum spec with very little overhead.

Is it possible to make a form of GPU where instead of using a massive PCIe slot it uses something like an internal Oculink cable? So as long as GPUs have a standard size they could be positioned anywhere in the case, possibly even behind the motherboard?

Like you could have a mini ITX motherboard and something like a 7090 back to back with massive fans on either side.

An occulink cable only gets 4 pcie lanes right? You’d lose a lot of performance relying on that type of connection compared to having a full x16 pcie lanes.

"Something like" so could be a really fat Oculink connector or four of them or a skrunken PCIe risor cable that connects to some sort of PCI double height GPU card that is square with a big fan or compatible with cpu heatsinks.

With modern PCIe gens you would need not only redrivers, but also retimers to make this connection reliable. Those are expensive components. It’s far more economical to just use slots soldered directly to the motherboard, that way the first slot can be connected directly to the CPU without any extra components at all, and the secondary ones only need redrivers.
 

He mentioned Deus Ex as an example of one of those old games that just ran wonderfully well, compared to Monster Hunter Wilds, which needs DLSS to achieve 100 fps at 4K or whatever. When it launched in 2001, the GeForce 3 Ti was about the best GPU money could buy. Deus Ex managed to chug along at around 30 fps at 800x600 and high settings. This is what people's rose-tinted goggles are remembering as "well-optimized games" (it also ran like shit compared to many Unreal Engine games).

I think his overall point was that a 20 year old game now looks better and sharper at native HD than modern games do because they need blurry FSR/DLSS to run at higher FPS, not that said 20 year old game ran like a dream on release.

Video is a bit of a rambling mess though, hard to follow what the fuck his actual point is other than Nvidia are shit. He spent like 5 fucking minutes looking at tree branches in Cyberpunk.
 
I couldn't hold out for longer. I have to play Monster Hunter Wilds. I ended up getting an RX 7900 XTX. Works great on everything so far as long as ray tracing is off. FSR is terrible, but good thing this card is powerful enough to not need it.
