I just did a Google search on what a grand jury is:

The main purpose of a grand jury is to decide whether an individual should be charged (or “indicted”) for a specific crime, usually only serious crimes. Because of the purpose of this proceeding, it is usually one of the first procedures in a criminal trial.

So basically...

They're just trying to buy more time, almost like a Continuance or something.
Indictments are extremely easy to get. The point is that he's officially in Felony territory and his ass is not going back home anytime soon.

He’s been sitting in a cell for about a year now playing solitaire and smelling like shit. And we’ve only just begun this Horror Show. In true Chris Chan fashion, he takes a terrible situation like this and finds a way to fuck it up exponentially.

He’ll pass on a 2-3 year plea deal and risk getting 5-10 at the hands of a jury. For a crime we have multiple recordings and handwritten letters of him confessing to said crime. He genuinely thought today he was getting good news about going home.

Not exactly, this would be the prosecution's first step to putting Chris away and even if nothing happens we still get to see a dozen or so normal people get exposed to Chris's antics.

I'm not familiar with the US judicial system, what does it mean when a case goes before a grand jury? Is it just that the jury decides if he is guilty or not instead of the judge or are there other differences regarding proof and witnesses?

That means theres a good chance felony charges are on the table, NOT a continuance. Chris could actually be going away for a long time.

I was hoping Chris would get out because I honestly missed him and his daily tweets and shenanigans. I'm honestly angry right now that he refused the plea deals. Why are you so god damn dumb, Chris?
We don't know if pleas were even offered yet. Chris is now in multiple felony counts territory and based on what they indict him for, a plea deal my be offered.
