Nearing the end of Mafia: Definitive Edition. How do I share my thoughts of it without having played the original game? It's definitely a methodical, "open world" crime game with flaws. I say "open world" loosely because the story is quite linear in design. You're a newly appointed mobster after taking two wise guys away from trouble. The story is told through a willing testimony in a diner as your way out of the "life."
It's your standard, drive here, shoot these guys, drive back with the occasional tailing or sneaking around. 1930s Lost Heaven looks gorgeous, especially the cars and women. The city feels populated with its mass population, countryside and collectibles to find. Driving is heavy and slippery; it's not uncommon to fishtail if you're not careful. You can even skip drives to destinations if you wish, but you'll miss out on character dialogue and story exposition.
Despite it being "open world," it doesn't encourage you to venture out during the campaign. There's a "free roam" section after the first mission if you want to finish collecting any collectibles. There's no mini-games, no economy (that I know of), no side quests. Just do what the boss says. For better and worse, it's like an interactive movie focused on its story. Shooting is substandard; you are often inaccurate with your shots. Makes sense in context, you're not an one man army. Time your shots carefully, but sometimes that won't work.
If you like mobster media, give it a try if you wish.
