Grand Theft Auto III was the fucking best. Developed before 9/11. Before the Great Enshittification. Before fucking lootboxes and shark cards, YouTube and troons, zoomers and retarded gimmicks. Before every moron in the world was on the Internet. When Google was still a search engine and not a designated shitting street. Just put on some Rise FM and take a ride in Liberty City at night.

I can't see them doing that. They tried that in IV, but the technology proved to be too hard to implement at the time.
Isn't the switchable protagonists a thing since San Andreas? Vadim M made a video about some scrapped scripts in main.scm

I think the entire 3d era was a blast. Hd era only was good with IV and expansions.

Nah, GTA3 always felt too much like a tech demo for me, plus the setting was just too depressing. Vice City was where it was at, that might be one of the best open world games of all time.

The atmosphere is one of my favorites. Just steal a car and drive listening to Rise FM & MSX FM like a demon.

80's nostalgia was the cherry on the top.

If you want to be specific, it was developed AT 9/11 with the one month delay wanting to clean up any similarities to the attack. With that, R* said that they cut/altered 1% of the content within those three weeks. Darkel, the bum, was cut BEFORE 9/11.

Darkel was basically the legacy of GTA 2 in one character. I understand why R* North cutted him off early.

Why would you want to kill children in a video game? I'm legitimately asking; it's not a gotcha.
I think it's controversial in case of Fallout because you could do it in Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 (to absolutely no benefit, most NPCs would refuse to have anything to do with you and bounty hunters would start spawning and attacking you) and then in Fallout 3 they made a settlement inhabited exclusively by annoying unkillable brats. So, people were pissed. Just don't have them at all like in most RPGs in which you can attack everything.

Gotcha. When did the original Fallout come out? 1997, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first two Fallouts were isometric top down RPGs. Even if Fallout allowed you to harm/kill children, I'd hazard a guess that the graphics were too primitive to tell at first glance.

Now, try an open world game like GTA in 3D that would allow you to harm/kill children at will, especially after Columbine. I want to use another example with that point. The Simpsons Wrestling was a 3D wrestling game that was released for the PlayStation in 2001. Springfield Elementary was intended to be a level, but executives nixed it to avoid any relation from the Columbine massacre. And this is a wrestling game.

GTA III, or any game similar to that, would not fly well for allowing the player to attack/kill kids at will.

I'd say death animations are quite violent and much less comical than in 3D ones, and child models have the same set of animations as regular adult models (being melted, being burned, having a portion of their chest blown out). I'd say 2D sprites allow for more gratuitous violence than GTA 3's 3D engine would allow.

Anyway, play it. It's a great game, it doesn't in any way encourage killing kids and you can do a pacifist run if you want to.

Don't say that when the Den pickpockets exist.

It really didn't do it for me. I played Vice City first, so when I played GTA 3 I got less weapons, more primitive game mechanics, smaller map and awful, dreary atmosphere full of muted dark colors. Just compare that to VC and you can see my disappointment. It didn't help that Claude was a piece of cardboard compared to Tommy, same with other characters being a bit dry. I think you have to really appreciate old mobster movies and be nostalgic for the old 2000s culture/aesthetics to really get the most of out of GTA 3. VC doesn't have that, it's fun from the first minute you play the game and you don't need to have watched any of the movies or shows that inspired it(like Scarface) to appreciate it. I've actually had similar complaints as I have with III with San Andreas, so it's not just the game being more primitive for me when SA was more technologically advanced than VC.
I will admit that radio stations in III were pretty good, but that's the case for almost every single station across all 3D era games.

Free roam around the map can get boring without a goal to do.
Which is why they did it because most gamercattle likes to do that, they were already doing it in the GTAIII era, its what I been trying to say for the last 3 posts or so: R* only cares that revenue goes up, they don't care if their games aren't revolutionary or even good anymore, they been selling the same goddamn game for 12 years and 3 console generations, they have proven they can get away with it already.

I wish I would've been able to play LCS/VCS ad-hoc multiplayer. I'm sure that was just an afterthought for a PSP feature. I thought ad-hoc meant online multiplayer.

Late 90s/Early 2000s Trance was something incredibly magical, same with the house music of that era.

I'm a zoomzoom and i discovered most of this incredible music thanks to the GTA franchise.

I've got a few songs I keep in my active playlists thanks to GTA 3, to it's credit
There are probably more memorable ones, but I stick by my point that the 80s music from VC and even 90s songs from SA are more recognizable for me.
Oh, honorable mention for this gem from GTA 2

We will never, ever get another body horror/grotesque game like this. Fallout will never, ever not be wacky. Vampire Bloodlines whatever the funkyrade 2 will be cartoony as shit. We are never getting good mainstream horror gore, ever. I remember parasite eve 2 having a disgusting ass fleshy CGI monster in some marketing material and it scarred me for life.

I know these games exist, but they're retro-made indie tranny slop. A truly grotesque horror game today would be a novelty, and even if it was pulled off to perfection it'd just feel forced.

I prefer the Liberty City Stories spin-off which is the GTAIII world but with updated Vice-city mechanics, and an actual speaking protagonist. You can also tell the story was heavily influenced by The Sopranos.
Downside was it never received an official PC/Xbox port, and since its a prequel a lot of Liberty city is undeveloped.
