Culture Guild Wars 2 writers fired following heated Twitter exchange with streamer - Gamergate, the gift that keeps on giving.

PC Gamer said:
Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet recently parted ways with writers Jessica Price and Peter Fries, who were involved in a contentious Twitter discussion with Guild Wars 2 Twitch streamer and YouTuber Deroir, who is also partnered with ArenaNet through its content creator program.

On Tuesday, July 3, Price wrote a lengthy Twitter thread about writing for MMOs, particularly Guild Wars 2, and why player characters are uniquely difficult to write compared to protagonists in singleplayer games. To put it simply, she discussed how to give characters personality in a way that also leaves room for players to create their own character. In a reply to Price's thread, Deroir argued that branching dialogue options could give players more ways to define their character's personality, overcome the MMO-specific constraints Price discussed, and improve the roleplaying potential of Guild Wars 2.

Yesterday Price highlighted Deroir's reply in a series of tweets suggesting he was uninformed and that his reply was condescending.

Among those tweets, the one that's drawn the most ire, particularly on the Guild Wars 2 subreddit, is Price's remark about "rando asshats" talking down to experienced writers and developers.

Responding to the mounting criticism of these tweets, Peter Fries defended Price's position in a now-deleted tweet which is archived here, saying "she never asked for [Deroir's] feedback".

For his part, Deroir said that he "meant no disrespect" and simply wanted to create "dialogue and discussion" with Price. He also apologized for any offense his argument may have caused.

In a post to the Guild Wars 2 forums, in a thread explicitly about Price and Fries' tweets, ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien characterized the statements as "attacks on the community," saying "two of our employees failed to uphold our standards of communicating with players" and that those employees are "no longer with the company." O'Brien also said "the statements they made do not reflect the views of ArenaNet at all."

It's no grand secret that game developers, especially women, are regularly targeted by fans who want to lash out, condescend or place blame, to say nothing of the insults, threats and other toxicity routinely hurled their way. That being said, this incident was not on the level of the harassment maelstroms we've seen in the past. A developer explained their writing philosophy, a partnered content creator offered feedback, and that developer responded somewhat rudely. Ordinarily that would be the end of it, perhaps followed by a round of apologies or someone stepping away from their role temporarily, but in this case ArenaNet felt the need to immediately fire the employees involved.
And the usual assclowns are out in full force:

Anyway, "Z-List Youtube celebrity" (he isn't totally wrong, the guy has like 8k subs), as opposed to an MMO writer, which sits where on the popularity totem pole? It's not like people are even perceived by the average gamer, unless they pull shit like this of course.

There's just no way you can spin freaking out at some fan for no reason at all, just because they politely disagreed with you and you threw an insane tantrum, as being even remotely acceptable behavior.

That "I'm woke so I'm automatically right" shit went out a couple years ago.

They only fired her because she mouthed off to a popular streamer and community partner. They still have people who would make Manveer Heir blush.

This is also a good point. This may have been why they fired this utter cunt, but it is far from the only issue this horrible creature ever committed. This whore has been despised in every community she has ever been a part of, and there is no doubt at all they were already looking for a reason to get rid of this absolutely awful cunt.

Seems like they jumped a gun in firing her imo

Bitch they were probably desperately looking for a reason to get rid of this insanely awful person from the moment of hiring her after she was fired from Paizo also for being an insanely awful person.

I hope to fuck you were just trolling with this retarded comment.

Kamiya partially owns Platinum, he's his own boss, he knows he can't be fired. If you want to be a smug bitch or to spit on the people buying your product you have to earn it.
Then, call me biased but there's a difference between how these two asshats interact with people on twitter.
>Hey Kamiya you manlet, do the thing! xD
>Kamiya how do I become a game dev lol
>Hey Kamiya you look like Krillin
>I TOLD YOU INSECTS ONE BIRRION TIMES. BLOCKED!
>Excuse me but I'm going to share my opinion about the game you're working o-
>DO YOU THINK YOU CAN COME HERE AND DO MY WORK YOU FUCKING SEXIST?!?!?!?

I'm guessing that this Twitter event was just a pretext for firing.

If you look over her Twitter history and work history it's plain that she's just a massive cunt. She's constantly in full SJW mode at all times on Twitter and she's never really been able to hold a job for even 1 year.

My guess is she's just a massive pain in the ass to work with. She gets hired by these woke companies based on her SJW cred but even they can't put up with her.

If you get fired from Arena.net, the most woke of woke companies, as a female Dev you've done fucked up.

Ok. Lets count the reasons Kamiya is allowed to mouth off the way he does. He was planner for Resident Evil 1 and the Director for 2. He created Devil May Cry, which was so popular at the time that Capcom considered it RE’s sister franchise until they fucked that up. He directed Okami, which would get best-of-all-time accolades even all it had going for it was art direction. He’s cofounder/VP of one of only 2 3rd parties that Nintendo trusts with IP. He’s also usually funny when he starts badmouthing someone.

This bitch’s only achievements involve gruntwork for a memeworthy kinect game and being a complete cunt to everyone around her.

DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I DID ADDITIONAL EDITING FOR KINECTIMALS YOU FUCKING NOBODY.

Is it just me or are there some MASSIVE gaps in that resume? It also jumps out that she has never held a job for longer than a year, with typically over a year between them. Further she has been at this last oh so important and expert dev job for less than a year. She had not quite a years time as a story writer at Paizo, a tabletop game, before that. Other than that her prior work history looks to be support, customer service, community management and play testing. Interchangeable low responsibility grunt positions given to anybody with a pulse that’s cheap enough and knows somebody. She literally has less actual practical dev experience than an intern. Why does this always seem to be the recurring theme in these little outrage shitshows. She’s yet another SJW example of the fucking groupie banging the tambourine claiming to be a Professional Muscician and member of The Rolling Stones.

Found another whiteknight, Derek Mitchell Hoagland, a programmer from Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Anybody who unironically uses the word "boy" or phrase "gamer boy" as a way to insult someone, is automatically gay and therefore has lost the argument.

What's funnier is that Kamiya is actually open to unblocking people if you ask nicely.

If you're so fucking emotionally fragile that people disagreeing with the exceptional things you say makes you flip out then why the fuck are you on the internet in the first place.

This kills me because microaggressions are an actual thing, like someone sighing if a disabled person asks to be handed something. Though they're not cumulative and it's not an excuse for flipping out on the last person. It certainly doesn't constitute harassment!

Haha what? Kamiya is an experienced dev-gone-creator with 6 director credits under his belt, all of which being critically positive and at least half of which launching entire franchises. He's not some nobody that worked on Kinectimals near the bottom of the totem pole. It's not that he's a man, he's the man.

Also he's not getting into prolonged arguments with people or making himself upset. Even when people do jump on him too much he handles it. Most of all he ignores tons of shit! She couldn't bring herself to not subtweet this guy.

To the "woke" crew, the mere fact that he has a penis and doesn't want to chop it off makes him automatically evil. Anything he says is automatically "mansplaining."

Kamiya also can have positive interactions, but he's very clear about his rules of engagement (right now he's very hot about people just assuming he's fluent in their language inc english) but he'll generally note in advance what he's feeling is a blockable offence. Ie if people are tweeting at him when he's not actually worked on a certain game that much, or getting a question he's answered a zillion times. It's on you if you ignore his warnings and tweet something low quality. To his credit: he will consider unbanning people if asked. But I imagine his mentions are always a hot mess.

Also Kinectimals was around the time it became pretty clear that Microsoft had totally gutted Rare to serve as their "casual game" studio. Quite a few veterans that had been at Rare, suddenly quit to become indie developers around that time.

I have always assumed Kamiya is (usually) entertaining himself with all the daily blocking and snarky comments. I doubt he's feverishly tweeting from real anger.

“Here’s a bit of insight that I legitimately hope he reflects on: she never asked for his feedback,” Fries wrote.
why did she tweet it if she didn't want feedback? (besides :autism: and maybe wanting asspats)

I don't understand these people. She has almost 13k followers. Every single one of them could've seen that post. If you want a private conversation, why are you on a public platform? It's like shouting in a town square and then flipping out when someone starts speaking to you.

Exactly. Remember "sea-lioning?" One of the dumbest SJW ideas to come from GooblerGrape. Don't want someone popping up in your mentions and challenging your exceptional statements? Don't use a public platform specifically designed so people can do that.

But of course they actually want it to happen. How else can they screech about being "harassed?

TBH, and I don't mean to shit on the fanbase of GW2, that is probably a large bulk of the remaining fans of the game. The game has been out for years, and this is the first publicity it has gotten in years. I don't blame the company for firing someone even if they didn't do anything wrong, if they pissed off the remaining fanbase. However, she attacked the fanbase, and remember that it is an MMO, a genre that relies on having a very active playerbase.

Exactly. In the industry it is not uncommon to jump from studio to studio if you're just on contract but contract work is mostly artists because you hire a lot of contract and freelance artists at crunch to do a bunch of work and then get rid of them at the end when the project wraps.

But writers are not contract most of the time and they're all permanent studio staff that do refinement for writing (or proofing and editing) all through the development. Then when that project is done, those writers are on the next project doing the pitch with the designers.

The fact that she doesn't last a year tells me that Jessica Price really is just an awful person and according to ex coworkers, her Twitter aggressiveness and real life are pretty much one in the same. Nobody wants to work with that. Nobody. I've worked with a few SJWs in my time in studios and most of them kept their shit to online but the ones who didn't? Most avoided like the plague.
