for the interested, it seems the hl2 update dropped, no changelog present though
Right now, what I'm seeing is they're unlisting the Episodes from the Steam store because they are rolling their launchers/achievements in with base HL2 along with Lost Coast, and they added new Developer Commentary nodes with Gabe and others.

don't forget the website that has the changelog
Lol, very inconspicuous huge empty space.

Really glad to finally see the SIGGRAPH 2000 Demo footage finally released, it's pretty interesting to see how the game looked in 2000. I mean it's basically just HL2 visuals imposed onto janky HL1/GoldSrc gameplay, which is kind of what people were expecting, but I still think its neat to see what they were able to get done in just less then two years after HL1's release. I was expecting it to be a bit more barebones.

I'll play the anniversary update when I get more time.

I mean, yeah, I recall that the Source Engine is pretty much an updated GoldSrc, the earliest the HL2 footage is, the closer it looks to the overall mechanics and feel of HL1.

I knew that, which is why I said that it wasn't really surprising that it would look like that. I was just mainly pointing out though that it was still interesting to see how the game looked at that time in action since we haven't had any video footage released prior regarding that era of HL2's development. I'm just kind of autistic in general for the development of games, and HL2 is one of those.

I just played the update and I'm disappointed. Granted, I barely progressed through the game, as I was listening to the developer commentary, however it didn't take long for the disaster to reveal itself.

The entirety of the second level in Point Insertion is beyond broken. Missing geometry, visible trigger textures, AIs are either missing or have a broken behavior, and the level transition is straight up missing as well. I had to use the console to get to the next level.

Third map crashed the game at the end, some error involving portals. Level rendering stuff.

So then I booted the first map of Chapter 2, only for it to immediately softlock as Alyx wouldn't register me walking forward lol. I'm calling it here.
I don't know what happened but this is a disaster of a release. Valve truly has fallen off.

On a side note: some of the commentary sounded very unnatural. Am I going crazy, or did they really use AI for some of them?

Second Edit: It's a me problem, not the update. Sorry.

TLDR half life 3 didn't get made because they weren't confident about not making samey feeling gameplay, but if we didn't have the development of half life 3 we wouldn't have left 4 dead, Dota, portal 2, etc.

@Gentle Wind Responding to the guy worried about the bugs being too much, they gave themselves less than 6 months to turn the update out so the fact there's bugs on first release isn't surprising, remind you even day 1 of half life 2 had a shitton of bugs as well, 1 notable example is not a bug but caused way too many issues which was collision on small debris, not even a few months ago tf2 had a model change that had too many conflicts that was reverted within the same week of the update. Also today isn't actually it's release date I'm assuming they did it a day early as well so they would be able to catch said bugs.

I edited my initial message with a screenshot to help grasp how broken it is. In its current state, the game is unplayable. There is even a main menu screen that crashes the game. I understand bugs happen, but this... I can't accept that.

I have been playing for a while and have encountered none of these problems whatsoever. Verify your game files?

I'm doing a complete fresh install of both steam and half life 2 on a computer i don't use on an Intel hp laptop from 2019.
It's you.
Also they added workshop support, uninstall your game completely from steam then reinstall the game.
