A lot of commie scum don't understand the monumental amount of manpower, resources and time that goes into healthcare. Doctors spend nearly a decade and hundreds of thousands of dollars just to practice basic medicine. If you want to reduce healthcare costs, the true answer is to identify then expunge the immense amount of corruption and bureaucratic waste from the whole system. Going all the way back to pre-med up to big pharma/big insurance itself.
Exactly. The reason insurance providers and big pharma are able to get away with outrageous prices stems from two things. For big pharma it's patents. Intellectual property, especially for medicine, is a horrible idea that ultimately leads to monopolies. And for big insurance, they are guaranteed money from taxes anyway, so they don't care if people don't buy their expensive insurance. Stop giving them tax money then they have to start offering reasonable prices.
While the idea of patents, copyrights and Intellectual Property ownership is necessary to make people actually research stuff, it really needs reform on a large scale; especially because of just how many of the big companies have really fucked it hard, to the point where research is stalled and instead it's "you know this compound that we've owned for 20+ years? Well, patent's expiring, so either find a new use for it, or add a methyl group somewhere so we can re-patent it." Similar thing with process patents, well small enough change to the patent equals new patent.

The current system financially encourages long term treatment by proprietary chemicals. It might be better long term if money pumped into research was pumped in by parties that want to find a cure rather than to help a pharmaceutical company profit off of a new patent. Plenty of people would still be around to throw money at researchers, rich people still get cancer after all.
