While the idea of patents, copyrights and Intellectual Property ownership is necessary to make people actually research stuff, it really needs reform on a large scale; especially because of just how many of the big companies have really fucked it hard, to the point where research is stalled and instead it's "you know this compound that we've owned for 20+ years? Well, patent's expiring, so either find a new use for it, or add a methyl group somewhere so we can re-patent it." Similar thing with process patents, well small enough change to the patent equals new patent.
