@AnOminous , you're right - the drama on this particular ride was infinitely more entertaining than the thing itself. As it is, if Hayden ever plans on resuscitating Gen Zed, he'll need to do a rewrite... Even in 2015, the references to memes seemed laughably out of date - now they give the show the appearance of a museum piece!

One thing I am curious about, though - according to his IMDb, since Gen Zed, Hayden seems to have done next to nothing. I wonder if right now, there's an embittered dishwasher somewhere in Burbank, cursing those antisemitic, transphobic trolls for laying waste to his dreams of media stardom?

The entertainment industry is full of these sleazy marginal characters like Black who just ooze their way from one scam to the next, but maybe Gen Zed was such a powerful failure that it locked him out of even the pitiable little demimonde where he previously eked out an existence. Or maybe he's become too lazy even to make up fake imdb entries for himself any more.

You raise an interesting point - has Hayden Black actually succeeded in making any money out of his various media projects? Even enough to cover his costs? I seriously doubt it. That's partly why I don't think the man's a scammer - really, the overall vibe I get is of a typically talentless wannabe media "creative" who continues to delude himself that his dull, uninspired, fad-hopping productions are the vanguard of a new wave of fresh, pioneering internet bla bla bla...

As for Black's IMDb, my first thought was that it simply hadn't been updated - but according to IMDb, Hayden appeared in a couple of episodes of some no-budget vox pops show - so, if nothing else, the man still harbours dreams of success...

Wasn't he relying solely on other people doing all the work and twisted their arms into using stupid & backward methods to make the show, like animating it all in Photoshop? I remember the animation in the trailer having all kinds of asset layering issues and very stilted animation like it was made for the Philips CDI, only still somehow being technically inferior to CDI Zelda.

I thought he used ToonBoom or something myself, but he could've been that fucking stupid.
 
I wasn't going to necro the thread for someone who makes stupid posts, but apparently his leftiness got him in trouble and he had his Twitter account removed.

He's clearly not willing to work for it. The art style & animation quality in Gen Zed is so minimalist & out of pocket that pretty much anybody, regardless of age, experience or mental capacity, could carry this series by themselves if given a few months & chained to a radiator. The entire production clearly revolved around the philosophy of assembly line efficiency rather than any real passionate craftsmanship. Every last detail is a sprite asset made to be reusable & interchangeable for all future applications. The established standards of quality are so low that he could probably complete it himself on part-time intervals. The animation is so communist in design and inferable intent that I bet he didn't actually select scenes from an already finished pilot to make the trailer, but instead had individual scenes made to make the trailer.


I also noticed that in the Doritos promo he published that the mouth flaps don't even match the spoken dialog as they do in the trailer proper, giving me the impression that he doesn't have access to the master copies of his own project & had to cut the trailer into pieces so he could rearrange them to make his Doritos promo.

That implies he chewed and screwed the company starving art majors he had make it for him and they're holding it hostage until he ponies up the cash he promised. A similarly common practice for music studios is to withhold your recordings if you don't pay for the time you used the recording booth, so it wouldn't come as a surprise if that's what happened and why there's no finished product.

He set up his merch store so early into promoting the show that he probably planned to pay the studio out of the merch proceeds after using the insolvent trailer to promote the merch store.

It'd be a clever scheme if Hayden weren't such an out of touch jag-off, if that's how he actually planned it, of course. However, even if that were the case, he's such a marketing dullard that he'd somehow manage make toilet paper unappealing to people with chronic diarrhea. His ideas of hip, young, nu-culture read like this:

So of course such a shake-and-bake strategy would never work out for him because the self-paying product he concocted to shill merchandise with was half-baked & ill-conceived garbage made in the obvious interest of meeting faux-focus group appeal.
