Even manga has done a way better heaven is worse than hell storylines before. GodSpeed while it only lasted a few chapters did that story way better while it was getting cancelled in japan and that creator of the series is fucking dead.
Reminds me of this idiotic Zombie Simpsons episode I watched the other day, where the city was forced to ban the teaching of evolution in school in favor of creationism. The whole thing comes off as a one-sided screed against religion, basically boiling down to "science good, religion bad". Never mind all the times where religion actually pushed science forward, like in the dark ages, where the religious were the ones keeping scientific growth alive.
Quite late to your post but I thought it worth noting. This is the same sort of shit that happened with JK Rowling. A largely innocuous thing happens and the social media mob overreacts. Their target sticks to their guns and as things get worse get more determined. These people literally create their own worst enemies because they're so used to targeting those who can be ruined by the mob that they don't seem to understand that when they do it to someone who can't be and refuse to back down that person is going to become the enemy they claim they are. I doubt Scott or JK really give much of a shit about the people targeting them but at this point they're not likely to change their minds because the mob has shown they were right to have those attitudes.
This is why I generally ignore shit people do on Twitter because it's all bad. Even people I otherwise respect like Nick Rekieta act like utter lolcows on Twitter.
And more importantly, as prominent and well-liked people are viciously attacked for saying absolutely sane things the vast majority of people already agree with, the mob itself becomes less intimidating and people are more likely to call them out on their fucking bullshit and tell them they're the morons they are.

I think its been clear from the start that Heaven, with its policy of just ruthlessly exterminating low-level demons to keep Hell from getting too full, is going to be portrayed as outright villainous. I guess that part has been easy to forget due to it only really being dealt with in the first minute of Hazbin Hotel.
It's so ironic given hell in real life is anything but cool. It's a place where bad people suffer for many years until they lose the will to live. Like the 9 gates of hell is not pretty and even has reincarnation in hell. If you make it out in all 9 gates of hell going down you will be reborn as some monkey monster-like demon.
I personally find the idea of Hell being anything humans can actually comprehend thoroughly ridiculous, and I likewise don't take seriously anything that claims otherwise. Hence why I wasn't expecting much in the way of an actual theological debate out of this series.

I thought it was Hell doing that, not Heaven. I'd actually like more on the mechanics of how these purges happen. Is it because the people purged are too evil? Or, alternately, too good? Or is it completely random? We have no information on this.

As much as we would like to debate how much current events will affect HH and it’s standing with A24, dollars to donuts is that it won’t do a thing.
People in some cultures think when you die and get reborn after being in the 9 gates of hell you will be isekai into a jungle world where human monkey-like demons exist without memories of who you are. I wish I had a better pic of what I'm talking about but Google is retarded when not giving me the right image.
What's more interesting to me is the end of Addict. There's a strong sense that Angel is slowly beginning to realize that despite the alleged Dionysian liberty of hell, in reality he's actually just another slave. Of course, that doesn't mean heaven is any better under Hazbin rules... but there are some strong hints that although heaven may be stifling, hell's freedom comes at too high a price.

Agreed. I was pissed when I realized Mettaton (the David Bowie robot from Undertale) was not, in fact, just a unabashedly fabulous man, but a thinly veiled trans metaphor. Hoping it doesn't happen with angel, I've jacked off to huskerdust too many times to just eject now.
