The Suffering.
Do you love horror films, spooky morbid shit and gore? If so you'll absolutely love this gem that was published by Midway of all companies. It's an action horror shooter with a third person viewpoint, lots of guns and explosives, loads of gore and cool horror scenes and awesome monsters that were designed by Stan Winston (AKA the dude who created the iconic Predator alien and worked on the original Terminator and all sorts of other awesome iconic baddies. They're awesome. This game is awesome. The soundtrack is improvised using found objects and rarely used instruments to create a one of a kind soundtrack to go with a one of a kind game that you'll never forget. The original release actually contains two mini documentaries on the game disk, one on the game and the other on Eastern State Penitentiary, the infamous prison that this game's starting location and lore was inspired by so I recommend it for that alone but it's also on GOG but you'll have to patch it because it was made for certain audio cards way back in 2004 so support for the drivers is non existent now meaning the audio will random stop working until you patch it. This game has become a cult classic and beloved game among horror fans over the years yet it never received the acclaim that it truly deserves and has never been covered by any large videogame centric youtubers somehow. Buy it today and enjoy what is easily one of the best games of gen 6 that sadly no one took a chance on. It got a sequel but it's not quite as good and is way harder for some reason.

Phantom Crash.
This game is simple in concept and execution and fits the description of easy to learn but difficult to master perfectly as it's easy at first but becomes incredibly difficult and requires your absolute focus and quick reflexes to win matches late game (seriously though the AI will one shot you if you stand still). It's an arcade style arena shooter but with customizable mechs set in the ruins of "old tokyo" in some generic far flung dystopian cyberpunk like future where people engage in arena combat with their mechs for money. You have 3 weight classes to choose from and you can choose to snipe, use explosives/cannons, automatic weapons or get up close and personal with shotguns and melee weapons as well and your mechs are powered by animal based CPU with their own personalities abilities and combat specialities. You also have jump jets and cloaking devices for multiple strategic options that you can use to play your way. The gameplay is fast, fluid and fun although the graphics have that weird 2000s murky look where everything looks washed out and kinda gray that got pushed for some stupid reason. This game would have fit in with the Dreamcast library perfectly but it's an obscure Xbox exclusive with its sequel being an obscure PS2 exclusive named "Steel Lancer Arena International" for some reason. And now you know why absolutely no one knows about this genuinely fun and engaging game from 2002. They both hover around $15-$20+ for a complete copy last I checked and it's well worth it in my book, if this game was released as a live service game today it would be HUGELY popular, if you love fast paced arena shooter/combat games this is your next obsession. These games will only go up in value as people discover how fun and slept on they are.

Psychonauts.
Okay this game FINALLY started getting the recognition it deserved back in 2005 but even so it took nearly 20 damn years and most people still don't seem to really know about the best platformer of Gen 6 so i'm including it anyway. This game has great colors, wacky models, fun gameplay and nutty characters and a world that's cartoony and twisted with a touch of dark comedy thrown in for good measure. The gameplay is solid, there really isn't anything to complain about and it's a genuine fun and memorable play through and yet no one cared when it came out thusly dooming it to obscurity for years which is a crime against quality game devs like the creators, Double Fine. This company and their games are always underrated yet they're one of the only western teams still around that make games that are actually FUN. It's on GOG and Steam and it works perfectly fine on modern hardware, if you haven't played it then treat yourself to this delightfully twisted action platformer. You won't regret it.

Brutal Legend.
A strange and experimental combination of RTS and open world adventure game Brutal Legend is a strange creature that isn't for everyone but if you're a metal fan this is a MUST play. It has a soundtrack containing 107 metal songs from 75 artists and the game world is inspired by classic metal album art cover. It won an award for best soundtrack but was otherwise utterly ignored. It's full of music and scene jokes, good comedy, tons of references, some celebrity cameos and more and once again this genuinely good game was made by Double Fine! Seriously these guys make some of the best games on the market and they get no respect or recognition. This game is an easy cheap grab and is available on GOG and Steam so if you like Jack Black, creative games and classic heavy metal this game is a no brainer. Who knows, maybe it will get a sequel in another few years like Psychonauts did VIA crowd funding.

Psychonauts is not a hidden gem lmao
I literally acknowledged that it finally started getting recognition after 20 years but posted it anyway seeing as how so many still don't know about it or haven't given it a try. Double Fine is one of the best game dev teams around and they deserve any and all support 110% even if it is a few people buying their old games on PC.

I do remember then contemporary articles saying it was overlooked and more people should play it. I've never played it though. There was a TV commercial. It had magazine ads. But I guess it didn't take off the way it could have.

I'm a big fan of Shikinjou. A block pushing puzzle game for multiple systems that was never released in the west. It has multiple playable characters and tile skins. The Genesis version is really cool in that regard. The cute hopping jiangshi will always be my favorite. 🤗

I wish the series would come back. I don't know who owns the rights. Sunsoft made the last game, which was for Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991.

Rebelstar: Tactical Command is the best Xcom-like game, even better than Xcom itself imo.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 ranks among the best DS mystery games, it's a great adventure/visual novel hybrid.

Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans obviously comes from a very popular franchise, but it's one of the more overlooked games for sure. It's a legitimately solid JRPG whether you like DBZ or not.

EDIT: I didnt realize the thread subtitles specified games, and I saw it on the sidebar so I didnt look at the subforum either.

Heat Signature is a pretty fun game I don't hear anyone talk about.

The OSS 117 series of films.

A French parody of James Bond.

1726636043294.png
OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies (2006)

OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009)

1726636258193.png
OSS 117: From Africa with Love (2021)

Now, according to Wikipedia these films are a revival of an older film series from the 50s and 60s (and early 70s).
1726636782170.png
However I have just recently found some of them available via torrents, namely the 5 seen below, one of which is only available in Italian despite being a French movie, and I haven't gotten around to watching any of them yet so I cannot vouch for/recommend them like I can with the recent ones. You don't need to know anything about the old movies to enjoy the newer ones.

Anyway, if you like parodies or spy movies and you don't mind reading subtitles (or speak French) these are a real hidden gem that no one talks about because of the language barrier.

I can think of a lot but most of these are games that are on the precipice of being "hidden" or they're something that's really hard to recommend. One example of the former is Resonance of Fate, breakout PS3 cult classic but had limited reach due to low copies and bad distribution because of Tri-Ace's godawful financial situation at the time. Meanwhile an example of the latter is gonna something like Ultrakill, which is still technically in "early access" so I have a hard time recommending it with a clear conscience.

The best game I can think of that I doubt most people would ever find or try by themself is Soul Nomad. This is a trategy game that can probably be best described as the drugged up version of Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem. The main weakness of the game is that the mechanics are never properly explained, but if you can get past that hurdle, it's a game with surprising depth and a lot of room to play around. Getting the true bad ending (Yes, the game has a true bad ending instead of a true good ending) requires you to know how to slap down enemies with over quadruple your power level, so you have to really know the mechanics to be able to really abuse multipliers and other gimmicks.
5625264-soul-nomad-the-world-eaters-front-cover.jpg
Its a JRPG technically, so unsurprisingly there's a big emphasis on the story. And honestly, this is probably my favorite lol. The game has a tracker for the number of playthroughs and I've played this game like... 27 times since my childhood just to re-experience the story, (independent of my playthroughs for grinding purposes). The story starts out with no sense of scale or urgency, set up to make the player take a lot of things lightly. But the stakes start ramping up fast as things start going from bad to worse. The setting and lore was heavily inspired by greek tragedies, and it shows quite a bit. You can basically sum up the cause behind everything going to complete and utter shit was 1 guy's misguided act of kindness, which ultimately doomed everyone.

To anyone who WILL play Soul Nomad, the PC port is horrendous. It's handled by NISA and it shows. There are lot of unreasonable lag spikes for a fuckin' PS2 game. I strongly, STRONGLY recommend emulating the PS2 version, you won't be missing any additional content either unlike most PC ports of NIS games.

Some of my favorite "hidden" gems.
Wasted countless hours on these games that aren't talked about very much.

I shit you not this last one was updated this month and nearly no one talks about it.header (6).jpg
Imagine half life 2 but it's like an arena shooter with bots and upgrades, etc. Another mod should be coming out soon that will be a roguelike hl2 as well.

Some of my favorite "hidden" gems.
A fellow Sven Co-op enjoyer.
It doesn't have any players, but Overwatch was a great mod. One guy plays the combine as a RTS, and the rest are rebels trying to complete the stage.

Psychonauts is not a hidden gem lmao
Let me tell you about a little known game called Earthbound. :smug: (I stole that joke from a kiwi, but it works so I'm doing it.)

My suggestion.
Urban Chaos is absolutely fantastic. Pure 80s gory police action. Taze guys to take them alive, or taze them so much they catch fire. Blow a guys head off and worry about the paperwork later. Rescue politicians so they can pull some strings to get you bigger guns. It's also a game who's relevance has increased with time what with BLM and the like.

And a flawed game (and part of my user name). Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death. Supposedly still available on GoG and Steam.
It was a budget game on the ps2, but damn, arresting guys for being fat owning a goldfish without a license is more fun than it should be. Walking into a room of cocky scumbags, setting one on fire and arresting his friends to make up for the good boy points you lost is what the game is all about. It's not for everyone, but I like it, and it's still cheap. Even if it doesn't work on modern hardware, you should be able to emulate it?

Great choice and I agree 100 percent.

Last_Window.jpg

Adding to that, they made a sequel for the EU & JP markets. If you have a homebrew DS or are willing to play in an emulator, it's well worth it.

I have some other suggestions as well.

Blinx: The Timesweeper had some of the most memorable and awesome music, character design, and it had a pretty creative time control mechanic. My only gripes about it was the fact that it's a pretty hard game given the demographic it was aimed at and the time control gameplay had so much potential but just wasn't developed as much. I read somewhere that the Xbox greatest hits re-release balances the game better, but I can't verify. Don't bother with the sequel imo.

Ghost Trick was made by the same guys who made the Ace Attorney series and you can expect it to have the same off the wall characters and great writing and humor.

Nine_Hours,_Nine_Persons,_Nine_Doors_Cover_Art.jpg

9 Hours 9 persons 9 doors is one of those Japanese visual novels that are pretty rare in the west considering they're pretty text heavy and you really need a skilled translator to translate the context and cultural cues as well. Very good story albeit kind of short, but on the other hand, it has choices that matter and several different endings.

Honorable mentions:

Professor_Layton_and_the_Curious_Village_NA_Boxart.jpeg

I know it's Tumblr's favorite DS series (don't worry, absolutely no SJW BS here. I swear), but I really have a soft spot for the Professor Layton series. They're by no means hidden, but I'd definitely consider the series forgotten since it's been like 10 years since the last release.

The_Legend_of_Zelda_Phantom_Hourglass_Game_Cover.jpgThe_Legend_of_Zelda_Spirit_Tracks_box_art.jpg

The DS Zelda games. Also, far from underrated, but at the same time it's a real shame these games haven't been given the attention they deserve in over 10 years. More than worth playing and replaying again and again.

I have played sven co-op in years, but I think I'll have to get back into it.

Thread Tax: Mon Bazou

Mon Bazou is an early access game that is similar to My Summer Car, but doesn't have the CBT that My Summer Car has.
