The Suffering.
Do you love horror films, spooky morbid shit and gore? If so you'll absolutely love this gem that was published by Midway of all companies. It's an action horror shooter with a third person viewpoint, lots of guns and explosives, loads of gore and cool horror scenes and awesome monsters that were designed by Stan Winston (AKA the dude who created the iconic Predator alien and worked on the original Terminator and all sorts of other awesome iconic baddies. They're awesome. This game is awesome. The soundtrack is improvised using found objects and rarely used instruments to create a one of a kind soundtrack to go with a one of a kind game that you'll never forget. The original release actually contains two mini documentaries on the game disk, one on the game and the other on Eastern State Penitentiary, the infamous prison that this game's starting location and lore was inspired by so I recommend it for that alone but it's also on GOG but you'll have to patch it because it was made for certain audio cards way back in 2004 so support for the drivers is non existent now meaning the audio will random stop working until you patch it. This game has become a cult classic and beloved game among horror fans over the years yet it never received the acclaim that it truly deserves and has never been covered by any large videogame centric youtubers somehow. Buy it today and enjoy what is easily one of the best games of gen 6 that sadly no one took a chance on. It got a sequel but it's not quite as good and is way harder for some reason.
Phantom Crash.
This game is simple in concept and execution and fits the description of easy to learn but difficult to master perfectly as it's easy at first but becomes incredibly difficult and requires your absolute focus and quick reflexes to win matches late game (seriously though the AI will one shot you if you stand still). It's an arcade style arena shooter but with customizable mechs set in the ruins of "old tokyo" in some generic far flung dystopian cyberpunk like future where people engage in arena combat with their mechs for money. You have 3 weight classes to choose from and you can choose to snipe, use explosives/cannons, automatic weapons or get up close and personal with shotguns and melee weapons as well and your mechs are powered by animal based CPU with their own personalities abilities and combat specialities. You also have jump jets and cloaking devices for multiple strategic options that you can use to play your way. The gameplay is fast, fluid and fun although the graphics have that weird 2000s murky look where everything looks washed out and kinda gray that got pushed for some stupid reason. This game would have fit in with the Dreamcast library perfectly but it's an obscure Xbox exclusive with its sequel being an obscure PS2 exclusive named "Steel Lancer Arena International" for some reason. And now you know why absolutely no one knows about this genuinely fun and engaging game from 2002. They both hover around $15-$20+ for a complete copy last I checked and it's well worth it in my book, if this game was released as a live service game today it would be HUGELY popular, if you love fast paced arena shooter/combat games this is your next obsession. These games will only go up in value as people discover how fun and slept on they are.
Psychonauts.
Okay this game FINALLY started getting the recognition it deserved back in 2005 but even so it took nearly 20 damn years and most people still don't seem to really know about the best platformer of Gen 6 so i'm including it anyway. This game has great colors, wacky models, fun gameplay and nutty characters and a world that's cartoony and twisted with a touch of dark comedy thrown in for good measure. The gameplay is solid, there really isn't anything to complain about and it's a genuine fun and memorable play through and yet no one cared when it came out thusly dooming it to obscurity for years which is a crime against quality game devs like the creators, Double Fine. This company and their games are always underrated yet they're one of the only western teams still around that make games that are actually FUN. It's on GOG and Steam and it works perfectly fine on modern hardware, if you haven't played it then treat yourself to this delightfully twisted action platformer. You won't regret it.
Brutal Legend.
A strange and experimental combination of RTS and open world adventure game Brutal Legend is a strange creature that isn't for everyone but if you're a metal fan this is a MUST play. It has a soundtrack containing 107 metal songs from 75 artists and the game world is inspired by classic metal album art cover. It won an award for best soundtrack but was otherwise utterly ignored. It's full of music and scene jokes, good comedy, tons of references, some celebrity cameos and more and once again this genuinely good game was made by Double Fine! Seriously these guys make some of the best games on the market and they get no respect or recognition. This game is an easy cheap grab and is available on GOG and Steam so if you like Jack Black, creative games and classic heavy metal this game is a no brainer. Who knows, maybe it will get a sequel in another few years like Psychonauts did VIA crowd funding.
